Dear Peter,
I’m very glad to help you fully make out the public service announcement you saw on the Internet. A strong earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale rocked Wenchuan in Sichuan province, southeast of China, on May the 12th, 2008. It’s reported that 69,227 died and 374,176 were injured and 18,222 were missing or buried in debris. Most towns in the area were in ruins, making millions of people homeless. After the disaster, the government calls on every people in China to make an effort to offer aid to the disaster-hit area. As the Chinese words on the picture express, which means “Unity is strength”, only if the whole nation joins together do the government and its people have firm determination and full confidence to overcome all the difficulties and help the stricken area to reconstruct.
I’m always ready for any of your questions about Chinese culture.
Yours sincerely,
Lihua

People believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you are wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(體育館). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and small holding places for hands and feet.
How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness(保護帶) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes tied to your harness. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.
