【題目】How to Study Smarter, Not Harder

Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:

Recite As You Study

Reciting—saying things out loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.

Take Fuller Notes

Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.

Study the Middle

The best time to review is soon after you’ve learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.

Sleep On It

Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It’s easier to remember material you’ve just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you’ve fallen asleep.

Combine Memory and Understanding

There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding.

The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.

【1】You can notice your mistakes by _______.

A. taking notes B. saying things out aloud

C. studying the middle D. sleeping on it

2When taking notes, you should _______ to better help you with reading.

A. write notes in your own words

B. underline important notes

C. take down every detail

D. write as quickly as possible

3The writer advises you to _______ as it is easier for you to remember material.

A. study after a period of activity

B. do some exercise after studying

C. study before going to sleep

D. study as soon as you get up

4Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?

A. Thinking about an idea in different ways.

B. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.

C. Going back to what first made you confused and start again.

D. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.

【題目】It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about my lack of bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.

“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her coworker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loved to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of a fame or salary.

I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

【1】Which of the following topics do the writer and his mother often talk about?

A. the writer’s dreams B. the writer’s future job

C. dinner plans D. wars around the world

【2】We can infer from Paragraph 1 that the writer’s mother _____.

A. doesn’t want the writer to major English

B. doesn’t think the writer should be a doctor

C. gets along very well with the writer

【3】The underlined word “bemoans” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “________”

A. agrees B. shouts C. complains D. smiles

【4】Which of the following statements is probably TRUE about the writer?

A. He wants to be like his mother’s co-worker’s son.

B. He wants to find a job in his community in the future.

C. He doesn’t think his mother’s co-worker’s son is perfect.

D. He wants to do something he really likes in the future.

A. the writer doesn’t know what his future will be like

B. the writer’s mother works very hard for the family

C. the writer doesn’t think being a doctor is a good job

【題目】If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its car-plane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2012.

“It’s the next ‘wow’ vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh.“ Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”

The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold(折疊) back up for driving. A runway is still required to take off and land.

The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.

The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go. When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.

The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers. Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(臨界)conditions.

The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS. Another option is a full-plane parachute. “If you get into a very awful situation, it is the necessary safety option,” Gersh said.

So far, the company has more than 70 orders with deposits. “We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.

【題目】Group–buying in China

Modeled after US hot website Groupon.com, group buying websites are now popular in China. These websites use the power of group buying to get competitive discounts (打折)for a daily deal on some best stuff to do, see, eat and buy in the cities across China. Discounts are available within just one click. Zhao lei, a software engineer in Beijing, loves the one-hour lunch break at noon, as it is the best time for him to check “today’s special” at his favorite group buying websites . In doing so, he often gets a certain cut off the price. At some sites, buyers are invited to leave notes about what they want to buy and the website will consider it if similar applications(申請)reach a certain number.
