【題目】A new Australian research indicates that children with a stutter (結(jié)巴) do not suffer disadvantages at school, More than ten percent of children have a stutter by the age of four but they score just as high as other children on tests designed to judge their language, thinking skills and character.

Professor Reillys team studied over 1600 children from Melbourne, Australia. Their mothers had been filling out regular questionnaires since their babies were eight months old and the children were judged by a range of language and behaviour tests when they reached the age of four. Reilly and her colleagues asked the parents to call the study group if their children started showing signs of stuttering. Diagnoses were confirmed by a researcher, who then visited the homes of children with a stutter every month to check on their progress.

By the age of four, 181 of the children studied had been diagnosed with a stutter. Follow-up visits to the 181 children who were judged after diagnoses showed just nine no longer had a stutter one year later. Stuttering children scored 5. 5 points higher than that of their non-stuttering children on language tests and 2. 6 points higher on the test of non-verbal intelligence. The researchers said it was possible that stuttering could improve language skills, or that stuttering could result from very fast language development among some children.

The research suggests parents of children who stutter are usually advised to wait a year before looking for treatment which can be expensive to see if the stutter goes away by itself, unless the children become very unhappy or stop talking.

Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

【1__ Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. ___2__ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. ___3___ Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about you hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your mounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

__4___ If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. __5__ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. Why should you forgive?

Rachel,a character in the popular TV show Glee, may be said to speak for British teenagers. “Nowadays being nobody is worse than being poor,” he said.

Emma Brockes,a reporter from Guardian, believes it is “the bad influence of celebrity(名人) culture” that is to blame. “When children wanted to be doctor,it wasn't because they were really more interested in the functions of human organs than they are now;you go where the respect is,”she wrote.

It could explain why there has been such an increase in levels of anxiety and depression. Dr. Carlo Strenger,of Tel Aviv University, studied the sense of self for his new book The Fear of Insignificance:Searching for Meaning in the 21st Century. “As humans,we naturally measure ourselves against those around us,but now we live in a global village. We are comparing ourselves with the most ‘important’ people in the world and finding ourselves wanting,” he said. Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success stories in the media.

The way out?Simply stop measuring your achievements through a fantasy of wealth and celebrity. Dr. Strenger said that it is a process called “active self-acceptance through a constant search for self-knowledge through life”.

We all know the importance of curiosity, and here are some tips on how to develop it.

Keep an open mind. This is essential if you are to have a curious mind. Be open to learning, unlearning, and relearning things. 【1 Therefore, you should be prepared to accept this possibility and change your mind.

2 Most people just accept the world as it is. This way, they will certainly lose the “holy curiosity”. Try to dig deeper beneath the surface of what is around you. A sure way to dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questions. What, why, when, who, where, and how are the questions curious people always ask.

Don’t label anything as boring. Whenever you label something as boring, you close one more door of possibilities. Curious people are unlikely to consider things boring. 3 Even if they don’t yet have time to explore them, they will leave the door open to be visited another time.

Take learning as something fun. If you see learning as a burden, there’s no way you will want to dig deeper into anything. That will just make the burden heavier. However, if you think of learning as something fun, you will naturally want to dig deeper. 4

Read diverse materials. It will introduce you to the possibilities and excitement of other worlds which may attract your interest in exploring further. One easy way to do this is through reading diverse materials. 5 It’ll feed your mind with the excitement of a new world.

A. It doesn’t matter that you don’t agree to others’ opinions.

B. Try to pick a book or magazine on a new subject.

C. Some things you know and believe might be wrong.

D. Don’t spend too much time on just one world.

E. Never take things as granted.
