There has been an outpouring of love for a 23-year-old disabled woman whose dog was killed in front of her while a groomer(美容師) tried to trim(修剪) its claws.

Calls and e-mails came from as far away as the Upper Peninsula and Arizona as well as Oakland and Macomb counties, offering Laurie Crouch, who uses a wheelchair because of multiple sclerosis(硬化癥), everything from dogs to money, such as that from Jason Daly of Roseville who said, “ I would like to buy her a new dog.”

A story about the death of Crouch’s pet, Gooch, was printed on the front page of Macomb Daily. Crouch said a man sat on the dog to trim its nails. Gooch died after one claw was trimmed.

Crouch yelled at the groomer to stop when she saw Gooch was struggling to breathe, but she said she was ignored. “If I could have walked, I would have put my hands on her and pulled her off my dog and physically stopped her, but I can’t do that.” Gooch was not a trained service animal, but naturally helped Crouch by picking up things for her.

“This case is absolute animal abuse(虐待),” Larry Obrecht, division manager of the Oakland County Animal Shelter in Auburn Hills, said.

People who read the story contacted Oakland Press to offer help. A message, from Rebecca Amett of Giggles N Wiggles Puppy Rescue, in Roseville, said, “We have puppies to donate … and want to help the young woman who lost her service dog.”

“When Gooch was with me, I was happy,” Crouch said, “I think I can be happy again but no animal can replace Gooch. There’s never going to be another Gooch out there but I think I will find a dog that can bring me joy again.”

The Unexpected Kindness Of A Stranger

Yesterday, as I approached the front door of our public library, a white-haired gentleman stepped back to hold the door for me. You see, I have to go everywhere these days with a walker, and folks are 1.__________ (constant) holding or opening doors for me, so this was not unusual.

However, I told the gentleman that the door had 2._______ automatic opener, and he did not need to stay to hold it open. He said “Here I thought I would have an opportunity to be 3._________ (help).”

At that, I backed up, let the door close, and allowed him to reopen the door, not 4._________ (use) the automatic control this time. His comment then was “Well, now I feel like that I 5._________ (accomplish) something helpful and worthwhile today.”

We never know 6._________ someone else is feeling. We seniors seem to feel we can take care of 7.________ at all times. So, gentle readers, never hesitate 9.________ (offer) kindness. You may find to your 10.________ (amaze) that there is more kindness in your community than you ever believe possible.

For a while, I wrote a “Tuesday tip” on my blog Lyonsdenmom.com. It was about easy week-night dinners, organizing parties or perhaps finding time out for friends.

About a year ago, I ran out of tips.

The truth? As a busy working mom with five busy kids, I probably do have a few tips to share. But honestly, the bar is set pretty low---on a recent day when I was walking our dog, a stranger who knew I had five kids said, “Wow! You have a dog, too?! And it even looks like you showered today!” Yes, it's true, I shower. Not every day, but most days. See, I'm telling the truth. Honestly, in this cold winter, I'm probably taking a shower more to warm up than to clean up.

Other funny truths? I'm tired. In fact, for the past year, I’ve been too tired to type up any update on our life here in Lyons Den. It's hard to arrange a career with all these kids. Although folks just believe that it must be so much easier now since all the kids are in school, I'm here to tell you, it's not. It's really not. When I get home from work, I'm often tearfully greeted by five kids and five homework folders filled with math facts, invitations, notices and artwork.

All those happy smiling faces I share on Facebook are real. We are a happy family---thank God for that! But we're not always smiling, and even in those rare best times when I can get all five kids looking at the camera, the odds would be that one of them isn’t wearing underwear, one is pinching (捏) someone behind the scenes and one is just perfectly pronouncing “Damn!” So, less perfectly-posed pictures, but more telling the truth. Even if only on Tuesday.

Lots of people stress out about talking in front of the class or getting laughed at if they make a mistake in front of an audience. 1. The “stress hormones"that your body produces at times like these can actually help you focus.

But when worry and stress about performing get to be too much, these hormones give people that “red alert(緊急狀態(tài))”feeling-the one that causes you to feel cold or sweaty, or get butterflies in your stomach. 2.Be prepared. 3. Rehearse(排練)as much as you can and practice in front of others at every opportunity. Most of all, think positively. Tell yourself “I'll be OK" or “ I can do this" even if you are not 100% sure of it Look after yourself. Before big performances it's easy to let taking care of yourself slip as you spend too much time on rehearsals and practice. 4. Exercise can also help you feel good, and along with sleep and nutrition, is an excellent way of keeping those stress hormones from getting out of control.

Find out what the experts do. You can find books, DVDs, and online information about how to give your best when you perform, depending on what type of performance you're preparing for. 5. Or ask the cast of your school play or your drama or music teacher how they beat stage fright. And if your parents or grandparents ever performed, they may have their own secrets to share.

A. Confidence helps beat stress hormones.

B. The following tips can help you avoid that feeling.

C. You're less likely to freeze up if you're well prepared.

D. You can do this whether you're performing alone or as part of a group.

E. Check out stories about Olympic gymnasts or your favorite star to get their tips.

F. Feeling nervous before a performance is part of your body's way of helping you do your best.

G. You'll look and feel your best if you get enough sleep and eat healthy meals before your performance.

Even after his death, Mitchell Whisenhunt has found a way to surprise and bring comfort to his wife and young daughter, with some letters he designated to be opened on certain dates.

Mitchell lost his battle with Marfan syndrome at 26. The rare genetic disorder affects the body’s connective tissue, which is used to hold together organs, cells and tissue.

Ashley Whisenhunt, 22, cared for her husband until his death but said she was astonished when she discovered the 30 letters he left for her, their 18-month-old daughter Brynleigh and the community.

The little girl will grow up with a letter every year from her second to 18th birthday from a man she didn’t get to spend much time with but who left no doubt that he loved her unconditionally. “Through his testimony, there is so much she is going to learn,” Ashley told ABC News.

One letter was also addressed to their Longview, Texas, community, thanking them for their support.

“It just blows my mind,” Ashley said of her husband’s secret gesture. “He thought about everybody else instead of himself.”

Ashley said she would respect her husband’s wishes and open each letter as he planned, however there was one special surprise left for her that she said hit her the hardest.

In a spiral notebook that Ashley used before she dropped out of college to care for her husband, he wrote a letter to her asking that she publish a book of poetry he had written.

Mitchell Whisenhunt even planned his own funeral, and the funeral director said he couldn’t tell Ashley because it was Mitchell’s plan and secret. Ashley said she couldn’t help but wonder what other surprises her husband had in store. “There are ones we still don’t know about it,” she said.

1.How many letters will Ashley Whisenhunt receive from her husband?

A. 30. B. 22. C. 12. D. 13.

2.The underlined word “ones” in the last paragraph refers to .

A. books B. poems C. notebooks D. surprises
