Listen carefully; we would like to tell you something that could save your precious time and money! Best of all, it is free! It’s “no”. What do you ask? We’ll say it again. “No”. Sweet and simple “no”.
Say “no” at your office and see how quickly that pile of work on your desk disappears. “Saying “no” to others means you are saying “yes” to yourself,” said Leslie Charles, a professional speaker from East Lansing, Michigan.
Susie Watson, a famous writer, said people who always say “yes” need to say “no” without guilt (內(nèi)疚) or fear of punishment.  “I would rather have someone give me a loving ‘no’ than an obligated (強(qiáng)制的)‘yes’”, she said.
Susie Watson says she feels “no” obligation to give an explanation when she says “no” either socially or professionally. Does she feel guilty about it? “Not at all,” said Watson, who is director of advertising and public relations at Timex Corp in Middle-bury. “Most people are afraid of saying “no”. My advice is to say “yes” only if you don’t mean ‘no’.”
Watson said “no” is the most effective weapon against wasting time. “Every year there are more demands on your time. Other people are happy to use up your time,” Watson said. Time saving appears to be “no’s” greatest friend. “No” can be your new friend, a powerful tool to take back your life. “No” may even take you further in the business world than “yes”. “No” is power and strength. “No” now seems completely correct. “Saying ‘no’ isn’t easy. But finally it’s greatly liberating,” Charles said. But, he added, a “no” project needs to be worked on every day because it is hard to change long-term habit.
But, he also warns: “Don’t go to extremes.  Don’t find yourself saying “no” to everything. In return you should learn to hear “no”.”
1. The underlined part “saying ‘yes’ to yourself” in the second paragragh means ________.
A. you can have more time to play with others
B. you needn’t care about other’s feeling if you are happy
C. you are selfish and treat others rudely
D. you can deal with your business as you have planned
2. When you say “no” to others you should say it in a ________.
A. secret way     B. polite way         C. proud way        D. guilty way
3 In Watson’s opinion, people can save much time on condition that ________.
A. they say “no” at a suitable time        B. they say “no” as much as possible
C. they are afraid of saying “no”         D. they make others angry at them
4. If a person says “no” to everything, the result he or she receives may be that he or she ________.
A. enjoys a wonderful life              B. makes a lot of money
C. faces difficulty in life                D. forgets to say “yes” in the end

A subject which seems to have been insufficiently studied by doctors and psychologists is the influence of geography and climate on the psychological and physical health of mankind. There seems no doubt that the general character of the landscape, the relative length of day and night, and the climate must all play a big part in determining what kind of people we are.

It is true that a few studies have been made. Where all the inhabitants of a particular area enjoy exceptionally good or bad health, scientists have identified contributory factors such as the presence or absence of substances like iodine, fluoride, calcium, or iron in the water supply, or perhaps types of land that provide breeding places for pests like mosquitoes or rats.

Moreover, we can all generalize about types of people we have met. Those living in countries with long dark winters are apt to be less talkative and less vivacious than inhabitants of countries where the climate is more equable. And where the olive and the orange grow, there the inhabitants are cheerful, talkative, and spontaneous.

But these commonplace generalizations are inadequate: the influence of climate and geography should be studied in depth. Do all mountain dwellers live to a ripe old age? Does the drinking of wine, rather than beer, result in a sunny and open temperament? Is the strength and height of one of the Kenyan tribes due to their habitual drinking of the blood of cows?

We are not yet sure of the answers to such questions, but let us hope that something of benefit to mankind may eventually result from such studies.

1._____ might serve as a suitable title for this selection.

A.The Importance of Geographical Environment

B.The Influence of Geographical Environment on Man

C.Generalization of Types of People

D.Geographical Environment, a Mysterious Subject

2.Using context clues we may infer that " iodine, fluoride and calcium" are _____.

A.substances which act positively or negatively on man's health

B.harmful substances in the water supply

C.substances which help provide breeding places for pests

D.substances contributory to good health

3.We may infer from the third paragraph that geography and climate play an important role in determining the inhabitants' _____.

A.health condition

B.personality

C.life-span

D.a(chǎn)ll of the above

4.According to the author, research into the influence of geography and climate should_____.

A.focus on some unknown aspects

B.be pursued on a larger scale

C.be carried out within a larger scope

D.go much deeper

5.The author hopes that studies on the influence of geographical environment will enable us to

A.generalize better about types of people

B.find better water supplies

C.gain an insight into its influence on mankind

D.live to a ripe old age

Walking down any of Shanghai’s main shopping streets this week, newcomers might think the locals have been celebrating Christmas for centuries. Christmas may not be a customary holiday in China, but businessmen in Shanghai know it will bring something more valuable than tradition: people are willing to spend money. Most Chinese may feel little connection with the Christmas celebration, but with most shops offering discount (折扣), the message couldn’t be clearer-- it is the season to part with one’s hard-earned cash.

Much of that marketing drive is directed towards thousands of foreigners and foreign companies that call Shanghai home. But for Shanghai’s 13 million locals, regardless of personal interest, there seems no avoiding the season’s commercial greetings. Along some major roads, nearly every shop window displays some symbols to the holiday: a man-made fir tree(杉樹) with lights, or a snowman.

With an increasing number of westerners arriving in the city for work, young Shanghainese, eager to keep pace with the latest western fashions, have begun to show their interest in Christmas. But some people still don’t think Christmas is an important festival in China. At least it is less important than the New Year and China’s Spring Festival.

1.Why are people willing to spend money during Christmas?

A.They have earned a lot of money.

B.Goods are much cheaper during this period of time.

C.It is time for shops to sell goods.

D.Businessmen like Christmas.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Christmas is the season people will hold their hard-earned money tightly.

B.Most Chinese people think they have something to do with Christmas.

C.Christmas is the season for common people to earn money.

D.Few Chinese people feel they are connected with Christmas celebrations.

3.Why do some young Shanghainese show great interest in Christmas?

A.They think themselves connected with Christmas celebrations.

B.They think Christmas is more important than New Year’s Day.

C.They want to follow the up-to-date western fashions.

D.They want to part with their hard-earned cash during Christmas.

4.From the first paragraph we know that _______.

A.It is difficult for most people to earn money.

B.It is easy for most people to earn money.

C.Only foreigners in Shanghai celebrate Christmas.

D.Christmas will be as important as China’s Spring Festival.
