【答案】Dear Mr Smith,

I’m writing to you because I slipped on the icy road and hurt my left leg. I feel terribly sorry for missing the oral English class.

Yesterday I rode my bike to go to school as usual. Unfortunately, I fell down from the bike because it had been snowing for two days, making the road very slippy. Feeling very painful in the left leg, I could hardly move and just lay on the frozen road. Then it was a passer by who took me to the nearest hospital.

I’d appreciate it if you can tell me what the homework is, and I’m sure I can finish it on time. What’s more, I’m looking forward to returning to school.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Li Hua

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。Finding the Real You
Psychometric testing—personality testing—has been very popular nowadays as studies show their results to be three times more accurate in predicting your job performance. These tests are now included in almost all graduate recruitment (招聘) and are widely used in the selection of managers.
The most popular of these personality tests is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It is based on the theory that we are born with a tendency to one personality type which stays more or less fixed throughout life. You answer 88 questions and are then given your “type”, such as Outgoing or Quiet, Feeling or Thinking.
Critics of personality testing raise doubts about “social engineering”. Psychologist Dr. Colin Gill warns that the “popular” personality traits (特性) have their disadvantages. “People who are extremely open to new experiences can be butterflies, going from one idea to the next without mastering any of them.” However, the psychometric test is here to stay, which may be why a whole sub-industry on cheating personality tests has sprung up. “It's possible to cheat,” admits Gill, “but having to pretend to be the person you are at work will be tiring and unhappy and probably short-lived.”
So can we change our personality? “Your basic personalities fixed by the time you're 21,”says Gill, “but it can be affected by motivation and intelligence. If you didn't have the personality type to be a doctor but desperately wanted to be one and were intelligent enough to master the skills, you could still go ahead. But trying to go too much against type for too long requires much energy and is actually to be suffered for long. I think it's why we're seeing this trend for downshifting—too many people trying to fit into a type that they aren't really suited for.”
Our interest in personality now exists in every part of our lives. If you ask an expert for advice on anything, you'll probably be quizzed about your personality. But if personality tests have any value to us, perhaps it is to free us from the idea that all of us are full of potential, and remind us of what we are. As they say in one test when they ask for your age: pick the one you are, not the one you wish you were.
(1)The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based on the belief that ________.
A.certain personality traits are common
B.personality is largely decided from birth
C.some personality types are better than others
D.personality traits are various from time to time
(2)According to Dr. Gill, what is the problem with personality tests?
A.Employers often find the results unclear.
B.They may have a negative effect on takers.
C.People can easily lie about their true abilities.
D.The results could be opposite to what employers want.
(3)What's Dr. Gill's view about changing our personality?
A.It's worthwhile trying in your adult life.
B.It's easy if you have great motivation.
C.It's difficult before the age of 21.
D.It's unlikely because it requires much energy.
(4)What final conclusion does the author reach about the value of personality tests?
A.They are not really worth doing.
B.They may encourage greater realism.
C.They are of doubtful value to employers.
D.They can strengthen the idea we have of our abilities.

The Best Time to Visit These Pricey Destinations
If you're going to shell out on a vacation, then you might as well do it right. With that in mind, we've asked a few experts for tips on when to visit some of the most expensive places across the globe. Here's what they had to say.
Botswana
Hotels in Botswana are second only to Dubai in terms of average cost per person, per night, at around $257. To make the most of your time there, consider an autumn visit, suggests Sarah Faith of Responsible Travel. “The heat peaks in October—this is the best time to go and see wild animals as they gather around in the Okavango Delta”, says Faith. While wildlife viewing is incredible in Botswana, there's much to enjoy away from the wilderness, too.”
New York City
New York is the second-most expensive holiday destination overall and the most expensive place to dine out, with an average meal for two costing around $67. Garrett, the CEO of Discover New York, suggests, “October and June have gorgeous weather, so outdoor activities are a good choice, with sailing, in-depth neighborhood walks and biking.” For great value, she advises traveling in January and February, when the city offers tons of indoor activities, from art galleries and Broadway shows to indoor sports events and thousands of dining options.
Sydney
With its incredible surfing beaches, dining scene and friendly locals, Sydney is always a favorite of travelers. It's also expensive. Generally, the shoulder seasons (fall and spring in the U.S.) have the most comfortable weather and fewer crowds than the December-to-February high season. But some months have particular appeal, according to Stuart Rigg, Australian travel specialist for Southern Crossings. April, for example, falls into the low season, which means you'll find hotel deals along with weather that's typically “very pleasant,” Rigg says. “Sydney also has some great events during this low season period,” he adds.
London
Petulia Melideo, who runs Context's London walking tours, advises booking well in advance for lower hotel rates, and suggests a wintry visit. “November is a great time for London. The weather is still tolerable—and if it gets too chilly, there are plenty of cozy pubs to pop into,” she says. Other good times to visit include June, which means fewer tourists.
(1)According to the passage, October is the best time to travel to________.
A.New York and Botswana
B.London and Sydney
C.New York and London
D.Sydney and Botswana
(2)Visitors to Sydney __________.
A.may find cheap hotels in the shoulder seasons
B.can enjoy wonderful beaches and dining scene
C.will experience the most comfortable weather in December
D.should avoid the low season because of the unpleasant weather
(3)Which is the desirable month if you'd like to visit London without too many crowds?
A.April.
B.June.
C.November.
D.December.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
Danielle Steel, America's sweetheart, is one of the hardest working women in the book business. Unlike other productive authors who write one book at a time, she can work on up to five. Her research before writing takes at least three years. Once she has fully studied her subjects, ready to dive into the book, she can spend twenty hours nonstop at her desk.
Danielle Steel comes from New York and was sent to France for her education. After graduation, she worked in the public relations and advertising industries. Later she started a job as a writer which she was best fit for. Her achievements are unbelievable: 390 million copies of books in print, nearly fifty New York Times best-selling novels, and a series of “Max and Martha” picture books for children to help them deal with the real-life problems of death, new babies and new schools. Her 1998 book about the death of her work shot to the top of the New York Times best-selling list as soon as it came out. Twenty-eight of her books had been made into films. She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for one of her books being the Times best-seller for 381 weeks straight.
Not satisfied with a big house, a loving family, and a view of the Golden GateBridge, Danielle Steel considers her readers to be the most important resource and has kept in touch with them by e-mail. While she is often compared to the heroines of her own invention, her life is undoubtedly much quieter. But, if she does have anything in common with them, it is her strength of will and her inimitable (獨特的) style. There is only one Danielle Steel.
(1)Danielle Steel is different from other writers because ________.
A.she can write several books at the same time
B.she often does some research before writing a book
C.she is one of the most popular American women writers
D.she can keep writing for quite a long time without a break
(2)Children who have read “Max and Martha” picture books may know ________.
A.how to deal with affairs at school
B.what to do if Max and Martha die
C.what to do when new babies are born into their families
D.how to solve the difficult problems in their writing classes
(3)One of Danielle Steel's achievements is that ________.
A.some TV plays were based on her books
B.her picture books attracted a lot of young men
C.one of her books became a best-seller in 1998
D.she wrote the Guinness Book of World Records
(4)We can learn from the passage that Danielle Steel ________.
A.lives an exciting life
