My mother let go of me when I could not let go of her .In one last brave moment she was strong for me ,thus making me strong ,too.

I stood with     and stared into her face .“Mom!”I cried and reached out for her .But as quickly as my “real ”Mom had appeared ,she    again into her world of a little child .       ,at that very moment I realized the mother ,that familiar Mom who knew and understood ,who      and sang with me in hard times ,would always be there , giving me       when I needed it most .

I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenager girl, and I couldn't bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads, coming across me wandering through the traffic; motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. "I'm awfully sorry," I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn't stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

Compassion is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into action. An experience last weekend showed me this is true, I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款機)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.
I couldn’t help staring at him, I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world, I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.
Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me” was all he said.
What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. An old woman had two large pots (罐), one on each end of a pole (扁擔). She carried the pole with the pots across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack (裂縫) in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered (遞送) a full pot of water. At the end of the long walk from the well to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half-full.

When I was struggling with cancer a few years ago, my wife and I formed our own “couple caution circle”. Anytime a doctor came with news of my progress, my wife would give me a big hug. The reports were seldom good during the early stages of my illness, and one day a doctor brought particularly frightening news. Staring at my reports, he said in a low voice, “It doesn’t look like you’re going to make it.”

There’s no danger of 88-year-old Harry Ward forgetting his wife Doris’s Valentine’s Day card – the couple still use the same one he bought her 70 years ago.
When 17-year-old Harry Ward presented Doris with a Valentine’s Day card as he boarded a train to join the wartime effort on February 14, 1941, he must have been fairly confident about his affections(鐘愛). After all the couple had been dating since they met in a café three months earlier.
But little can he have imagined that 70 years on, not only would he still be happy about having married Doris, but that every year she would present him with the very same card he gave her that Valentine’s Day. “I bring it out of the cupboard and put it on our mantelpiece(壁爐臺)every Valentine’s Day,” she said. “It’s a special to me now as it was 70 years ago. Harry has never bought me one since, because I have this one every year.”
They first met in a café. “Harry was in the café drinking and he said hello. He asked me my name and we got talking happily. He offered to walk me to the bus stop but when we got outside, a bombing raid(突然襲擊)had started and we had to run to a nearby air-raid shelter(防空洞),” Doris said.
Mr. Ward said,“I knew Doris was the one for me the moment I met her. I gave her the Valentine’s card then and she is still my Valentine now.” Mrs. Ward’s card is not the only thing that has endured the passing of time.
“Harry is quite romantic and we are as still in love as the day he first gave me this card,”Dorris said.
