When I entered Berkeley. I hoped to earn a scholarship. Having been a Straight-A student, I believed I could   36 tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne. I was extremely interested in the ideas he   37  in class.
When I took the first exam, I was   38  to find a 77, C-plus, on my test paper,   39  English was my best subject. I went to Professor Jayne, who listened to my arguments but remained   40 .
I decided to try harder, although I didn’t know what that   41  because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 77. Again, I   42  with Professor Jayne. Again, he listened patiently but wouldn’t change his   43 .
One more test before the final exam. One more   44  to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts and, for the first time,   45  the meaning of the word “thorough”. But my   46  did no good and everything   47  as before.
The last hurdle(障礙)was the final. No matter what   48  I got, it wouldn’t cancel C-pluses. I might as well kiss the   49  goodbye.
I stopped working hard. I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even   50  myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once I’d have   51  with a test.
A week later, I was surprised to find I got an A. I hurried into Professor Jayne’s office. He   52  to be expecting me. “If I gave you the A-pluses you   53 , you wouldn’t continue to work as hard.”
I stared at him,   54  that his analysis and strategy(策略) were correct. I had worked my head   55 , as I had never done before.
I was speechless when my course grade arrived: A-plus. It was the only A-plus given. The next year I received my scholarship. I’ve always remembered Professor Jayne’s lesson: you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

【小題1】學習一門課程,修一門課程,習慣上都用take,如take a course/ class/ lesson,當然也可以take a suject。
reason with sb.
但是這次還是沒啥效果,當然是my effort did no good,努力貌似比較白費。
注意,如果是everything stayed the same as before,可以用半系動詞stay,因為有stay the same 這個固定搭配。
14】 might as well do sth. 新概念二冊第19課, “I might as well have them,” I said sadly.“我還是買下這兩張票的好,”我垂頭喪氣地說。
I even treated myself to a movie,考前很放松,自己掏錢去看電影。
happen to碰巧意外?prove to證明?pretend to假裝?seem to好象似乎?

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.

During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had mus-cular dystrophy (肌肉萎縮癥) , When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dream.

I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was differ-ent. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.

When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and over-coming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you. ”

Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before

  Dear Rick ,

My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. 1 also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that 1 don ‘t have long to live anymore. But I still smile as much as 1 can.

I told you someday 1 was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I will never get to do that. But I know 1 ‘m a champion , and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven , God will give me my medal and when you get there , I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.

Your friend ,

Matthew
