Both art and architecture have a history of ages. All forms and ways of expressing beauty have been explored. In the case of architecture, many building that were designed in the past have proven to be beautiful and served their purposes. We could save millions of dollars by copying designs of architecture of buildings from the past.Besides, some people find modern architecture ugly.So why should we pay a lot for designing new buildings? The same goes for modern art, both paintings and statues. Many art objects created in the past are now covered by dust in storerooms. They are enough to decorate all public places. There is no need to create more art, and as with modern architecture, many people find new art difficult to understand or appreciate.
Considering these facts, why are architects and artists asked to create new art works? And why are we interested in creating new ones, instead of using or copying what was made in the past? The answers to these questions have to do with the function of art in society today.
First of all, the function of art is to decorate.By placing art works in parks and hanging paintings or drawings on the walls, we make our living environment more beautiful. When our eyes move across an empty wall, they will for a few moments rest on a painting or drawing hung there.it makes us feel good.Sometimes, paintings are not beautiful at first glance. But watching and thinking about them for a while or repeated viewing will help us learn to appreciate them.
Another function of art is enriching real life, as art is part of everyday life.Art helps us learn to think creatively. In art, things are not always what they seem to be.Art objects in park are sometimes funny.Very often we can hardly tell what they are.We need such creative moments. It helps us to balance our minds. With art like that all around us, our life is more interesting.
Finally, art is often seen as a way to instruct the audience.Statues of heroes from the past remind us of our history.Paintings and other art objects can also help us to realize which goals we should set for ourselves and inspire us in our everyday work.
Because ideas about society change and very period of time has its own taste, there is always a need for new art.We can still appreciate art works made in the past for their beauty, but they are often too valuable to be placed in public places.Besides, they also often need special protection.

B.The beauty of art and architecture
C.The design of art
D.The history of art and architecture
2.The writer’s attitude toward modern art is very________.

“If you run for more than five minutes at any time, you might need a pair of running shoes,” advises Stephen Pribut, a US sports medicine expert. Running shoes are highly technical footwear. They provide stability(牢固)while bearing up to three times the wearer’s body weight. But it’s not easy to find the right pair. Finding the right running shoes is something of an art, or a science and a feel.
The science part begins with the shape of the arch(弓)of your foot, which anyone can find out at home with this quick experiment: Put your foot in water and place it on a piece of brown paper. If you see a “C” shape on the paper when you remove your foot, you have a rare high arch. If the shape looks more like a rectangle, that means you have flat feet. See something in between? That’s a normal arch.
Conveniently for shoppers, shoe companies nowadays divide their shoes in three categories: neutral(for high arches), stability(for normal or low arches) and motion control(for flat arches). So you will know which type suits you.
At this point, most people would just grab an appealing shoe and try it on. But professionals would do a few quality-control tests. First, you bend the shoe toe to heel to see where it bends. If it’s not at the forefoot---where the foot actually bends, be afraid. Then you grip both ends and twist in opposite directions. If you can twist it like a towel, it means there’s zero support. Finally, you squeeze(擠)the heel in both directions. A stable heel won’t cave in.
Now you need to check the mold(模子)that shapes the inside of the shoe: whether it’s wide or narrow in the mid-foot, how it sits on the heel and how roomy the toe box is.
It’s wise to hold off until the afternoon to make the shoe purchase, to allow for any swelling(腫脹) that your feet do throughout the day. Toes also decide sizing choice. The rule is you need a finger’s width from your longest toe (whether that’s your big one or not) to the end of the shoe.
What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Advantages of wearing running shoes fitting you.
B.Ways to get to know about the shape of the arch of your foot.
C.Advice on how to choose the right pair of running shoes.
D.Best time to buy a pair of running shoes.
If the arch of your foot looks like a “C” shape, you have _________.
A.a(chǎn) normal arch B.a(chǎn) high arch C.a(chǎn) flat arch D.a(chǎn) low arch
.The underlined phrase “cave in” most probably means ______.
A.bend B.stretch C.shake D.crash
.Why is the late afternoon the ideal time to go shopping for shoes?
A.We are likely to be more patient in the afternoon.
B.Feet usually become large late in the day.
C.The toes become longer late in the day.
D.The arch of our feet will be in best shape in the afternoon.

The day before the deadline for this article,I had no clue what I was going to write about. I took my problem to the editor-in-chief, and.he said to me:“Don’t worry; you’re creative. ”
I’m not sure where the editor-in-chief reached the conclusion that I was “creative”. Maybe it was through the poems I wrote. Personally, I simply enjoy writing because it’s fun. There’s also the fact that I can’t draw or do anything else creatively, I’m equally sure that there are people in the boat on the other side who can make things look excellent, but can’t write a poem.
At this point you probably want to ask me what poetry and art have to do with engineering. For one, it makes you a more rounded person, making you a better engineer. More importantly, as an engineer, you will be faced with many problems every day. There are some that can be solved by consulting a textbook, but more often than not, you will need that thing in your brain to put together things in a completely original combination to solve the problem at hand.
Think of the wonderful things that creative engineers have done. Civil engineers have made the road more long-lasting so we don’t have to close them for repairs as often. Coming up with a new innovation (創(chuàng)新) is similar to writing a good poem. It’s not some-thing you plan to do. The critical moment comes unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere. You don’t think about what you’re doing, you simply do. After some mad struggling you take a look at the end product and say to yourself, “This is a masterpiece. ” This is perhaps the greatest personal satisfaction one can
experience.
So all you engineers out there get out and do something creative. I don’t care if it’s writing a poem or a computer program, just be natural and do something creative.

Nineteenth-century writers in the United States, whether they wrote novels, short stories, poems or plays, were powerfully drawn to the railroad in its golden years. In fact, writers responded to the railroads as soon as the first were built in the 1830’s. By the 1850’s, the railroad was a major presence in the life of the nation. Writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David saw the railroad both as a boon(要求) to democracy(民主國(guó)家) and as an object of suspicion. The railroad could be and was a despoiler(掠奪者) of nature, furthermore, in its manifestation of speed and noise. It might be a despoiler of human nature as well. By the 1850’s and 1860’s, there was a great distrust among writer and intellectuals of the rapid industrialization of which the railroad was a leading force. Deeply philosophical historians such as Henry Adams lamented the role that the new frenzy for business was playing in eroding traditional values. A distrust of industry and business continued among writers throughout the rest of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth.
For the most part, the literature in which the railroad plays and important role belong to popular culture rather than to the realm of serious art. One thinks of melodramas, boys’ books, thrillers, romances, and the like rather than novels of the first rank. In the railroads’ prime years, between 1890 and 1920, there were a few individuals in the United States, most of them with solid railroading experience behind them, who made a profession of writing about railroading—works offering the ambience of stations, yards, and locomotive cabs. These writers, who can genuinely be said to have created a genre, the “railroad novel”, are now mostly forgotten, their names having faded from memory. But anyone who takes the time to consult their fertile writings will still find a treasure trove of information about the place of the railroad in the life of the United States.
1.The underlined word “it” in the passage refers to______.
A. railroad B. manifestation C. speed D. nature
2.In the first paragraph, the author implies that writers’ reactions to the development of railroads were______.
A. highly enthusiastic B. both positive and negative C. unchanging D. Disinterested
3. According to the passage, the railroad played a significant role in literature in all of the following kinds of books except_______.
A. thrillers B. boys’ books C. romances D. important novels
4. The phrase “first rank” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to______.
A. largest category(類別) B. highest quality C. earliest writers D. most difficult language
5. Which of the following topics is the main idea of passage?
A. The role of the railroad in the economy of the USA
B. Major nineteenth century writers
C. The conflict between expanding industry and preserving nature
D. The railroad as a subject for literature
