Nowadays, people in many big cities are complaining the heavy traffic. It has serious influenced people’s daily life and economic development. To solve the problem, some pieces of advice is put forward. Some people suggest that more streets and roads are built. By this way,the traffic density can be reduced, thus speeding up the flow of buses and cars. Some people advise limit the number of bikes and cars. This can decrease the traffic flow. But on the other hand, this will effect the consumption and makes buses more crowded.

In my opinion, the number of private cars should be put under the control. And at the same time, buses should have their own special routes where cannot be used by other vehicles.

My wife and I have always been friendly with the clerks at the local convenience store. I don’t think many people appreciate what a difficult job these folks have. They work for a little over minimum wage and I often wonder how they make ends meet.

One of the clerks, Charlie, was always wearing his glasses but he didn’t one day. I asked him about it and he said they’d been out of order and that he couldn’t afford a new pair. His family needed money. It was obvious that he was having a difficult time.

We wanted to help him, so we turned to our own eye doctor for assistance with a plan. We had his secretary contact him, asking him to come in for an eye exam for free. We told the doctor to let him order whatever glasses he wanted and that we would pay for them. Although Charlie questioned what was going on, the doctor just told him that someone had offered the money for his new glasses. When we went in to pay the bill, the doctor told us he was so touched by our idea that he waived the exam fee and only charged us for half the price of the glasses!

It was so wonderful to see Charlie in her new glasses and he enjoyed telling all the regular customers how the gift came about. I’m sure that upon hearing her story, ideas of kindness may have emerged in the minds of many.

The origins of the apple tree are in Asia. We know that 8,500 years ago apples were being grown and eaten in ancient Jericho, a city near the Jordan River. In some parts of the ancient world apples could only be afforded by royalty (王室成員) and their courts, and were a popular dessert as long ago as 4,500 years. Now the apple is the most popular fruit in the world.

You probably know that there’s a tradition for students to bring shiny apples to their favorite teachers. But why?

No one knows for sure. The idea of "an apple for the teacher" has been with us since the late 1800s. Perhaps the custom grew out of the fact that apples are ripe (成熟的) in September, when the school year usually begins. In earlier times, students, particularly those in rural areas, could pick apples from trees on their way to school. They were easy gifts for children to give.

However, the lovely practice took on a dark note if the other children thought the gift-giver was trying to buy the teacher into giving him or her better grades. "Apple polisher" came to mean someone who tries to please a superior (上級(jí)) in return for special treatment. It was a popular college slang (俚語) term in the 1920s, but the term isn’t used much any more.

It’s true that apples can be very attractive. The apple is America’s favorite fruit, as shown in the phrase, "as American as Mom and apple pie".

After all, who ever says, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away" or "You’re the banana of my eye"? And who brings a banana to his or her teacher? Nobody.

1.What do we learn about the apple from the passage?

A. It has been popular worldwide since 8,500 years ago.

B. It has been a popular dessert for about 4,500 years.

C. The origins of the apple tree are in America.

D. Everyone could enjoy this fruit in the ancient world.

2.Why did students give their teachers apples?

A. Apples were ripe when the school year began.

B. Apples were the most popular fruit.

C Apples were expensive enough as gifts.

D. Teachers liked to get apples from students.

3.Which of the following is TRUE about the phrase "apple polisher"?

A. It is used to praise someone for his / her performance.

B. It is still as popular nowadays as before.

C. It may mean something good or bad, depending on the situation.

D. It refers to someone who wants to please a leader.

4.What do we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A. Apples are related to mothers in America.

B .Apple is a popular word, and used in many phrases.

C. Apples are attractive because of many stories.

D. Nobody wants to use the word banana.
