【題目】Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate from the bottom of your heart, for he was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When asked how he was able to do so, he would reply,“___________________

There was no doubt that Jerry was unique because he had several followers who were in his shadow from restaurant to restaurant. Obviously, these colleagues were greatly touched by Jerry’s attitude so as to follow him here and there. Being a natural motivator, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation whenever he or she was having a bad day.

Curious about his style, I went up to Jerry and asked him, “ I can’t believe it! You can’t be a positive person all the time. How do you do it? ” Jerry replied, “ Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or to point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.”

“Yeah, right, it’s not that easy,” I protested. “ Yes, it is,” Jerry said. “ Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live life.”

I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon after I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination(密碼組合). The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments(碎片) of the bullets still in his body.

I bumped into Jerry about six months after the terrifying accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, “_________________Want to see my scars(傷疤)” I_____see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “ Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.” “Weren’t you scared?” I asked.

Jerry continued, “The paramedics(護理人員)were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read,‘ He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.” “What did you do?” I asked. “Well, there was a big nurse shouting questions at me,” said Jerry. “She asked if I was allergic to anything. ‘Yes’ I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Bullets(子彈)!’. Over their laughter I told them, ‘I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’ ”

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his experienced doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

【題目】Dear Reader,

I receive many letters from children and can’t answer them all—there wouldn’t be time enough in a dayThat is why I am sending you this printed reply to your letterI’ll try to answer some of the questions that are commonly asked.

Where did I get the idea for Stuart Little and for Charlotte’s Web? Well, many years ago I went to bed one night in a railway sleeping car, and during the night I dreamed about a tiny boy who acted rather like a mouseThat’s how the story of Stuart Little got started.

As for Charlotte’s Web, I like animals and my barn(谷倉)is a very pleasant place to be, at all hoursOne day when I was on my way to feed the pig, I began feeling sorry for the pig because, like most pigs, he was doomed to dieThis made me sadSo I started thinking of ways to save a pig’s lifeI had been watching a big grey spider at her work and was impressed by how clever she was at weavingGradually I worked the spider into the story that you know, a story of friendship and salvation(拯救)on a farmThree years after I started writing it, it was published.(I am not a fast worker, as you can see.

Sometimes I’m asked how old I was when I started to write, and what made me want to writeI started early—as soon as I could spellIn fact, I can’t remember any time in my life when I wasn’t busy writingI don’t know what caused me to do it, or why I enjoyed it, but I think children often find pleasure and satisfaction in trying to set their thoughts down on paper, either in words or in picturesI was no good at drawing, so I used words insteadAs I grew older, I found that writing can be a way of earning a living.

Some of my readers want me to visit their schoolSome want me to send a picture, or an autograph, or a bookAnd some ask questions about my family and my animals and my petsMuch as I’d like to, I can’t go visitingI can’t send books, either—you can find them in a bookstore or a libraryMany children assume that a writer owns or even makeshis own booksThis is not true—books are made by the publisherIf a writer wants a copy, he must buy itThat’s why I can’t send booksAnd I do not send signatures—I leave that to the movie starsI live most of the year in the country, in New EnglandFrom our windows we can look out at the sea and the mountainsI live near my married son and three grandchildren.

Are my stories true, you ask? No, they are imaginary tales, containing fantastic characters and eventsIn real life, a family doesn’t have a child who looks like a mouse; in real life, a spider doesn’t spin words in her webIn real life, a swan doesn’t blow a trumpetBut real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imaginationAnd although my stories are imaginary, I like to think that there is some truth in them, too—truth about the way people and animals feel and think and act.

Yours sincerelyE.BWhite

【題目】Technology is creating big changes in the music industry. Music lovers listen to and buy music on the Internet. They can watch live concerts of favorite artists online. And music makers, as well as music industry officials, use social media(媒體) to reach an increase public interest.

Nick Sherwin is the founder of the band called Suburban Skies. He says today’s technology permits a band to control its own future. He said, “Social media is a wonderful thing. You can make use of it to reach the public.” Sherwin says the Internet and social media have created possibilities for musicians. He says the new way to success is to give visitors more than one type of experience. “The most important thing is the content. You have to have songs and videos to show the audience. But I think it is extremely important to do shows, to build your brand, and to make you well known, Sherwin said.

Music industry officials discussed the future of the business during an international conference in Los Angeles, California. They said musicians are choosing to perform live across the country, following the drop in CD sales in the Unites States. Rob Light is head of music with a creative artists agency. He said, “Most of the income for artists is now coming from the live marketplace.”

Along with the popularity of live music there has been a big increase in the number of music festivals. These events are advertised on social media. Pasquale Rotella leads Insomniac, a company that produces electronic dance music festivals in several countries. “Someone could make it in their bedroom and put it out there. People can gain fans online without anyone’s help. That has completely helped the growth of dance music. said Rotella.

Bob Pittman leads the radio organization Clear Channel Communication. He says music lovers are still listening to the radio, although there are new ways of finding music. He says 70 percent of Americans say they discover new music from what they hear on the radio. But Rob Light says radio will soon be a thing of the past. However, Nick Sherwin is not worried. 【題目】Education is an expensive part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone. Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing, radio repair, computer programming or driver training, along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their courses depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The basic goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of community.

Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns.

The teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time learning how to use materials, libraries, statistics, and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation (積累) of facts.

This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time, “How can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”

1The underlined words “reason well” probably means _____.

A. persuade firmly B. list the reasons clearly

C. think logically D. conclude immediately

2It is implied in the passage that _____.

A. all high-school students take the same courses

B. every student must take practical ability training courses

C. every public school offers the same academic subjects

D. the subjects every student takes may vary

3American schools place great emphasis on the learners’ _____.

A. knowledge B. accumulation of facts

C. creativity D. ability to work with hands

4What makes American education different from others’?

A. The large number of schools.

B. The variety of the courses.

C. Its consideration for immigrants.

D. The basic goal of the education.
