Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can cause heart attack or stroke(中風(fēng)) within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one report of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants(污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. Another study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)considers to be of “moderate”(良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

In recent years, research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists. 1. If we compare a human brain to a hard disc(硬盤), what the scientists are doing is to make better use of the hard disc.

Experiments have started on animals. In 1999, a transplant(移植) experiment was done at the Defense and Military Physiology Research Institute in the U.S. and turned a bear into a dolphin(海豚). 2. They were made of the memory area in the dolphin’s brain containing information about swimming. They obtained a series of useful information, which was saved into a button-sized chip(芯片). Later the information was transplanted into the action memory area in the bear’s brain. 3. It proved to be a highly successful experiment and a bear was turned into a dolphin.

Not long ago, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The experiment had an entire transplant of the memory area. 4. The transplant was performed from a dog named “Genius” to a dog named “Idiot”. “Genius” could understand and follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. However, “Idiot” had no contact with people at all since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory.

5. When the two dogs woke up, “Idiot” had grasped all the abilities “Genius” had; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But “Genius” gave no response to its master, and in fact did not recognize him at all.

A. The experiment was a complete success.

B. Then it was released(釋放) by means of electric power.

C. One of the latest research topics is how to change the human brain or combine it with the computer.

D. Different images have different meanings in the memory area.

E. It included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc.

F. Discoveries show that messages are carried by the central nervous system in the brain.

G. Using the most advanced technology, detailed images were produced.

Around three forty-five on a rainy Saturday morning, I was woken up by the sound of my pager(呼機(jī)) beeping. As a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician, I can never count on a full night of sleep. I pulled myself out of bed and went toward the desk to grab my radio. Our crew was being sent to a nearby home where a man was in cardiac arrest (心臟驟停). We found the man lying on the kitchen floor with his wife beside him. We rushed the patient to the hospital, but despite our efforts, we were unable to save his life.

In my line of life, I rarely get any recognition from the patients we treat, or from their loved ones. But that night, a man’s wife approached us, and through her tears, whispered, “Thank you.” Then she hugged each of us. She knew we answered her late-night call for help, even though the ending was not positive.

There is something deeply rewarding about helping people in these circumstances. Sometimes, I’m able to make their worst day a bit better: like seeing the tears of an injured child turn into a smile when I gave him an interesting toy; or watching a terrified mother’s screams turn into tears of joy when she realized her baby was going to be fine.

Experiences like these allow me to see the impact my work has on others. At the same time, I also know the effect it has had on my own life. As a teenager, I felt awkward when my dad hugged me and said, “ I love you, my dear son.” I was equally uncomfortable and responded, “I love you.” But then I imagined him lying on the kitchen floor that rainy night and realized that my opportunity to say those three words could---at any moment---be taken away forever. Now, I extremely treasure the moment when my father says those three words to me. I’ve learned to appreciate every relationship I have, to tell people I care about them, and to never take anything in life for granted.

1. On that rainy Saturday morning, the author was woken to ____________.

A. meet his father for the last time

B. put out a really big fire

C. save a man’s life

D. do a scientific experiment

2.The author mentioned the injured child and the terrified mother to show that__________.

A. Life was not always pleasant

B. His help could bring people happiness

C. He saved a lot of people

D. They were very grateful to him

3. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to ___________.

A. a rainy Saturday morning

B. special love

C. others’ recognition

D. the author’s work

4.According to this passage, we know that ___________.

A. The author’s work greatly influenced him

B. The author’s father died several years ago

C. The author regretted treating his patients badly

D. The author never treasured every relation with others
