Some years agowriting in my diary used to be a usual activity.I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s eventsfeelings, and impressions in my little blue diary.I did not really need to express my emotions by way of wordsbut I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past?

When I was thirteen years old,I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well?equipped with pens,a diary, and a camera.During the tripI was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across.I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night thereI wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moonand the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows.I automatically took out my pen...

At that point,I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary.

Now,I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling.I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books,or observations that are particularly meaningful.I take pictures, but not very oftenonly of objects I find really beautiful.I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old.I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camerabusy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.

I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes.Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations of people and places;maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me.I don’t live to make memoriesI just live, and the memories form themselves.

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers(生產(chǎn)商) follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征) of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Men's clothes tend to button from the right, and women's from the left. Considering most of the world's population----men and women----are right-handed, the men's standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women's clothes button from the left? History really seems to matter here. Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having women's shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having men's shirts button from the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt. Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women's shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women's shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing men's shirts.

1. What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?

A. It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years.

B. It is different for men's clothing and women's.

C. It woks better with men than with women.

D. It fails to consider right-handed people.

2. What do we know about the rich men in the 17th century?

A. They tended to wear clothes without buttons.

B. They were interested in the historical matters.

C. They were mostly dressed by servants.

D. They drew their swords from the left.

3. Women's clothes still button from the left today because.

A. adopting men's style is improper for women

B. manufacturers should follow standards

C. modern women dress themselves

D. customs are hard to change

4. The passage is mainly developed by.

A. analyzing causes

B. making comparisons

C. examining differences

D. following the time order

(2013·高考北京卷,D)People who multitask all the time may be the worst at doing two things at once,a new research suggests. The findingsbased on performances and self?evaluations by about 275 college students, indicate that many people multitask not out of a desire to increase productivity, but because they are easily distracted (分心) and can’t focus on one activity. And “those people turn out to be the worst at handling different things,”said David Sanbonmatsua psychologist at the University of Utah.

Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues gave the students a set of tests and asked them to report how often they multitasked, how good they thought they were at it,and how sensation?seeking (尋求刺激) or impulsive (沖動(dòng))they were. They then evaluated the participants’multitasking ability with a tricky mental task that required the students to do simple mathematical calculations while remembering a set of letters.

Not surprisingly, the scientists said, most people thought they were better than average at multitasking, and those who thought they were better at it were more likely to report using a cellphone while driving or viewing multiple kinds of media at once. But those who frequently deal with many things at the same time were found to perform the worst at the actual multitasking test. They also were more likely to admit to sensation?seeking and impulsive behaviorwhich connects with how easily people get bored and distracted.

“People multitask not because it’s going to lead to greater productivity, but because they’re distractible, and they get sucked into things that are not as important,”Sanbonmatsu said.

Adam Gazzaley,a researcher at the University of California,San Franciscowho was not a member of the research group, said one limitation of the study was that it couldn’t find out whether people who start out less focused tend toward multitasking or whether people’s recognizing and understanding abilities change as a result of multitasking.

The findings do suggesthowever, why the sensation?seekers who multitask the most may enjoy risky distracted driving.“People who are multitasking are generally less sensitive to risky situations.”said Paul Atchleyanother researcher not in the group.“This may partly explain why people go in for these situations even though they’re dangerous.”

1.The research led by Sanbonmatsu indicates that people who multitask________.

Aseek high productivity constantly

Bprefer handling different things when getting bored

Care more focused when doing many things at a time

Dhave the poorest results in doing various things at the same time

2.When Sanbonmatsu and his colleagues conducted their research,they________.

Aassessed the multitasking ability of the students

Bevaluated the academic achievements of the students

Canalyzed the effects of the participants’tricky mental

tasks

Dmeasured the changes of the students’understanding ability

3.According to Sanbonmatsu, people multitask because of their________.

Alimited power in calculation

Binterests in doing things differently

Cinability to concentrate on one task

Dimpulsive desire to try new things

4.From the last paragraphwe can learn that multitaskers usually________.

Adrive very skillfully

Bgo in for difficult tasks

Cfail to react quickly to potential dangers

Drefuse to explain the reasons for their behavior

(2013·高考福建卷,B)Your glasses may someday replace your smartphone, and some New Yorkers are ready for the switch. Some in the city can’t wait to try them on and use the maps and GPS that the futuristic eyewear is likely to include.

“ I’d use it if I were hanging out with friends at 3 am.and going to the bar and wanted to see what was open”said Walter Choo,40,of Fort Greene.

The smartphone?like glasses will likely come out this year and cost between $250 and $600,the Times said, possibly including a variation of augmented(增強(qiáng)的) reality,a technology already available on smartphones and tablets (平板電腦) that overlays information onto the screen about one’s surroundings. So,for example,if you were walking down a street, indicators would pop_up showing you the nearest coffee shop or directions could be plotted out and come into view right on the sidewalk in front of you.

“As far as a mainstream consumer productthis just isn’t something anybody needs,”said Sam Biddle, who writes for Gizmodo.com.“ We’re accustomed to having one thing in our pocket to do all these things”he added,“and the average consumer isn’t gonna be able to afford another device (裝置) that’s hundreds and hundreds of dollars.”

9to5Google publisher Seth Weintraub, who has been reporting on the smartphone?like glasses since late last yearsaid he is confident that this type of wearable device will eventually be as common as smartphones.

“It’s just like smartphones 10 years ago,”Weintraub said.“A few people started getting emails on their phonesand people thought that was crazy.Same kind of thing. We see people bending their heads to look at their smartphones, and it’s unnatural”he said.“ There’s gonna be improvements to that, and this a step there.”

1.One of the possible functions of the smartphone?like glasses is to ________.

Aprogram the opening hours of a bar

Bsupply you with a picture of the future

Cprovide information about your surroundings

Dupdate the maps and GPS in your smartphones

2.The underlined phrase“pop up”in the third paragraph probably means“ ________”

Adevelop rapidly

Bget round quickly

Dgo over automatically

3.According to Sam Biddle,the smartphone?like glasses are ________.

Anecessary for teenagers

Battractive to New Yorkers

Cavailable to people worldwide

Dexpensive for average consumers

4.We can learn from the last two paragraphs that the smartphone?like glasses ________.

Amay have a potential market

Bare as common as smartphones

Care popular among young adults

Dwill be improved by a new technology
