I am a member of our school’s volunteer association. During my freshman(大學(xué)一年級(jí)新生) year, I was asked to write up a plan for volunteers who assisted patients there. So I visited the hospice (末期病人療養(yǎng)所) several times. Later, I realized I could do more for the patients and so began volunteering.

When I was a freshman, I was not used to college life. I sometimes felt the hospice was like home. Here, many grannies treated me like their own relative, and I could feel strongly that I was needed. Just shaking hands made them come to life. I not only get great comfort from helping many patients get through the last period of their lives. I also learn a lot from their experiences.

You have to be prepared both mentally and physically. Most people at this hospice are facing death. So you have prepared to be patient and make them happy and relaxed. Also, persistence is needed. After seeing so many people here die, I know that persistence is hard. But you have to remember that you job is to help them feel less pain before death.

Good volunteers have something in common: They regard their job as a career, rather than some task that’s been assigned. They learn to enjoy what they are doing, no matter how boring it is. We have a volunteer who has been with us for more than a year. His job is translating letters from kids we helped. Even when he was busy with his classes, he would take a taxi to our office to pick up the letters. When we asked him why, he told us he enjoyed the kids’ stories and learned a lot from them.
___________________
Students are often very enthusiastic and direct. They give us feedback that helps us improve our work. And they value the opportunity we give them to broaden their horizons. However, they are still young and some are not responsible enough. And sometimes, they are lazy and careless.

Martha was busy with her job. She believed she had to work harder because she loved her father who was sick with cancer. She had to provide for his expensive medicines. Her brothers and sisters meanwhile stayed with their father most of the time. They bathed him, sang for him, spoon-fed(用匙喂) him or simply kept him company.
One day Martha was hurt. She overheard(無(wú)意中聽到) her father telling her mother, "All our children love me except Martha."
"How can this be?" Martha thought. "Am I not the one killing myself in my work to have money to pay for his medicines? My brothers and sisters do not even provide their share in the expenses."
One night, as Martha was as usual late in going home, she saw her father was lying awake. She walked close to his bedsides. Her father held her hands and said, "I miss you. I don't have much time. Stay with me." And she stayed with her father holding his hand the whole night.
The next morning Martha said to everybody, "I have taken a leave of absence. I would like to be with father. I will bathe him and sing for him from now on." Her father had a beautiful smile. He knew Martha loved him, too.
As children, we need the presence of our loved ones. Adults need no less. I have observed my mother’s orchids(蘭花). When she is away for a long time, they are unhealthy and many of them wither(干枯). 科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2011-2012學(xué)年安徽省高三英語(yǔ)綜合測(cè)試題一 題型:閱讀理解
The area south of the Thames at Greenwich has a long history. Throughout time different buildings have been constructed on the same site. The Palace of Placentia, an English Royal Palace built in 1447, no longer exists apart from a few remains under the present buildings.
The grand buildings on the South Bank of the Thames at Greenwich were designed by Sir Christopher Wren, most famous for St. Paul’s Cathedral. The buildings were finally completed in 1745, although some parts started to be used as early as 1705. They’re now part of a university — having served as a naval(海軍)hospital and a naval college and the setting for several cinemas.
But the buildings stand on a site which has a much longer history, of which now only a part remains that is below the ground. For nearly two hundred years, from around 1450 to 1650, Greenwich was one of the main royal palaces of England. Some of the most famous English rulers, such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, not only lived there, but also were born there.
Henry VIII put an armory(兵工廠)there, and there were also gardens, a great fountain (噴泉) and a mass of buildings. The Palace was also in a strategic location, because at the time either side of Greenwich on the Thames were important Royal Dockyards (船廠).
Eventually, though, the Palace fell into disrepair. In 1664, the King at the time, Charles II, decided to replace it with completely new buildings in a modern style. Only a cellar (地窖) from the former Royal Palace now remains, under one of the new buildings. Its red brick, typical of the 16th century, contrasts (對(duì)比) sharply with the white stone above it.
Would you like to join us to have a good view of Greenwich?

4.Where can we most probably read this passage?
