For those who are tired doing the laundry, Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smartphone app(application).
Strange though it may seem — “my wife already does that” was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week — Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install (安裝) a large number of internet-connected features in machines in an effort to make them “smart”.
Last year, it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year, it’s Wi-Fi-enabled laundry machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad.
The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control, so the machines can be turned on and off while their owners is at work or on the bus.
Samsung says it’s not just something new — the app connection actually has some practical uses.
“If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out, you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when come home, so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go,” said spokesperson Amy Schmidt.
The company also says that with electricity rate(電價)varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money.
Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do —enable laziness. Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV.

A new system that scans customers’ fingerprints and subtracts(減去)the grocery bill from their bank accounts has taken supermarkets in Germany to use the new system. “Almost a quarter of our customers pay with their fingers,” said an employee at the headquarters. Edeka has tried the system at 70 of its supermarkets. It says it will introduce it at 200 others because customers like it.
“At first we thought that only the young who really keep up with the latest technology would be interested, but we were wrong,” said Stefan Sewoester from IT Werke. “Almost two-thirds of the people who use the system are 40 and older,” he said.
IT Werke, a computer company, is one of the pioneers of fingerprint payment software in Germany. It has helped about 150 shops, canteens and bars to put in the fingerprint scanning machines. Each costs about 2,000 euros.
To sign up for the service, customers must have their fingerprints taken and leave their addresses and banking details with the shop. The shop then takes the cost of goods directly out of the customer’s bank account.
“It is especially a good thing for elderly people. Now they do not have to remember their pin to pay with their bank cards, or to scratch around for their glasses or cash.” Sewoester said.
The stores benefit from the system too. It saves more than time in the check-out line. It also cuts out the hidden costs of accepting electronic card payments.
小題1:According to the passage, the fingerprint system______.

B.has caused payment revolution in Germany
C.is more popular with young people
D.is preferred by most American customers
小題2:To apply to pay with fingers, customers are required to do all of the following EXCEPT______.
A.have their fingerprints taken
B.leave their addresses
C.give the shop information about the bank accounts
D.have their phones connected with computers
小題3:Why do elderly people benefit much from the fingerprint machine?
A.They will spend less time on shopping..
B.They are not forgetful.
C.They don’t like to pay in cash
D.They always fail to find their bank cards.

American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood,it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes(淋巴細胞).The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes. Then it forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.
Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from connecting to T4 ceils. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell,it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.
Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to cloned protein instead of the real ones.Scientists use genetic engineering methods to make the clones.Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times;the AIDS virus must go to it.
In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell.It floats freely,so a lot more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 protein on T4 cells. One report says the.AIDS virus connects to cloned protein just as effectively as it connects to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning to be tested in animals. If successful,it may be tested in humans within a year.
小題1:The new technique can     .
A.cure AIDS
B.kill the AIDS virus
C.prevent the AIDS virus from spreading

A.cloned protein stays On the T4 cells
B.it connects to cloned protein more effectively
C.cloned protein is made by genetic engineering methods
D.cloned protein floats freely, and many more can be put into the blood
小題4:Which of the following statements is NOT true?

More than one in eight U. S. adults finds it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time and about one in eleven tries to hide his or her online habit, according to a study showed on Tuesday.
The study by researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine in California found one in eight adults admitted they needed to spend less time online, saying this showed "problematic Interact use" is present in a sizable portion (部分)of the population.
The study involved a nationwide telephone survey of 2,581 respondents in the spring and summer of 2004 with researchers then examining the data and preparing the report which appears in the October issue of CNS Spectrums.
The survey found that 68.9 percent of respondents were regular Internet users and 13.7 percent of the users found it hard to stay offline for several days at a time.
It found 12.4 percent often stayed online longer than intended, more than 12 percent said they saw a need to cut back on their Internet use, and 8.7 percent tried to conceal (隱瞞) "non-essential "Internet use from family, friends and employers.
A smaller number, 8.2 percent, said they use the Internet to escape problems or a bad mood, while 5.9 percent felt their relationships suffered because of too much Internet use.
One report published earlier this year said that 5 percent to 10 percent of the population likely will experience Internet addiction (上癮).
It said signs include a disregard for health or appearance, lack of sleep and reducing physical activities and social communications with others, as well as dry eyes and juries of hands and fingers.

C.why to throw off the Internet addiction becomes a hot problem
D.why so many adults want to spend less time on the interact
小題2:Those who try to hide their habit of addition to the Interact make up of the respondents.
A.12.4%B.8.7%C.5.9%D.13.7%
小題3:According to the researchers, which statement is true?
A.Online habit of people has been a dangerous problem to society.
B.All of the Interact users have terrible psychological problems to solve.
C.The internet is more harmful to people than good.
D.We have to pay attention to negative effects from the internet.

People who eat at home most of the time have better nutrition than those who go out to eat , a recent study shows. Cornell University professors Lana Hall and Karen Bunch interviewed(面試,接見) 3900 people in the survey. “People who eat less than 30 percent of their food away from home eat the most nutritiously,” they said.
“In general, Americans don’t have nutrient, except for iron and calcium,” they reported. They have the opposite problem——over—consumption(過度消耗), especially of fat.
The food at many fast food restaurants is often low in vitamins. “People who eat more than 30 percent of total calories away from home eat foods that are generally low in nutrients per calorie,” the professors said. More calories and enough nutrient intake(吸收) are required to achieve.
One of the major health risks(風險) is eating too much fat. The professor found than fat consumption became greater as income(收入) went up. It also went up in houses where the female worked. This is probably because these people eat more highly processed (加工的)foods.

C.Eat foods with a lot if iron, calcium and fat
D.Eat more highly processed foods
小題2:What is the result if people often dine out according to the passage?
A.They tend to have better nutrition
B.They tend to have less nutrition
C.They can save a lot of time
D.They will spend much money on it
小題3:Nowadays, a major health risk that people face is_______.
A.Eating too much fast foodB.Frequent dining out
C.Eating at home very oftenD.Eating too much fat
小題4:The passage is about       .
A.Eating and Health
B.The Life Style in Modern Society

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is one of the world’s greatest art museums. Millions of people have entered its doors to see paintings by the world’s fine artists. But if these priceless masterpieces are to be preserved, the Gallery must protect them carefully. The Gallery’s 135-man guard force has successfully prevented them from being stolen, but protecting the paintings from nature is a greater problem.
In past times, the owners of paintings did not protect them from damaging changes in humidity(濕度)and temperature. As a result, the life of these paintings were shortened. In the National Gallery, however, humidity and temperature are carefully controlled. The building is air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter. The air-conditioning and heating system are so important to the life of the painting that the Gallery has two of each system. If one should fail, the extra one can take over.
Light is another enemy of paintings. Ultraviolet rays(紫外線)in light cause paintings to fade(褪色). Long ago, paintings often hung in dark churches and palaces. A coat of varnish(清漆)was a protection from the weak light. But when museums took over the care of many paintings, they were often hung in brighter light than before. Soon they were in danger of fading. The damaging effects of light were increased when the museums removed the varnish coating, yellowed with age.
To protect its paintings, the National Gallery put a special kind of glass in its skylights. This glass allows visible lights to enter the building but it keeps out harmful ultraviolet rays. The Gallery has also developed new and better varnishes which help to keep paintings from fading. Thanks to these new precautions, many of the world’s greatest paintings are being well protected for future generations to enjoy.
小題1:The text mainly tells us about_________________________.
A.the guard force in the National Gallery
B.protecting great paintings from nature
C.priceless paintings of past times
D.the air-conditioning and heating systems in the National Gallery
小題2:Which of the following is NOT an enemy of paintings?
A.Varnish.B.Temperature.C.Light.D.Humidity.
小題3:The underlined word “precautions” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ____________.
A.decorationsB.problemsC.suggestionsD.applications
小題4:From the text we can infer that________________________.
A.great artists painted in dark churches and palaces
B.you can touch these paintings while you are in the National Gallery
C.the care of the world’s greatest paintings is both a big responsibility and a great challenge
D.the guard force in the Gallery has not done a good job

A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people.  Puppy love(早戀)may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression. The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.
The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “l(fā)oss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “l(fā)ose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “l(fā)oss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.
Dr Marianm Kaufman,an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.
Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes—and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age.Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.
小題1:What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Puppy love may bring young people depression.
B.Parents should forbid their children’s love.
C.Romance is a twoedged sword for adults.

A.Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.
B.Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.
C.Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.
D.Careless parents whose children are deep in love.
小題3:What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.
B.Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.
C.Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.
D.The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.
小題4:What’s the author’s attitude towards puppy love?

Let's face it.No one drinks diet soda for the taste.People drink diet soda in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it.Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet soda."What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain," said Sharon Fowler.
The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly l0 years.
While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.
Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet soda, they don't lose weight at all."We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us," said Rogers.
So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet soda, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.
A related study found some sweeteners (甜味劑) raised blood sugar levels in some mice."Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky," said Helen P.Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas's school of medicine."They may be free of calories, but not of consequences."

A.causes people to become heavierB.helps people to be healthier
C.makes people much thinnerD.offers people more calories
小題3:We can learn from the passage that _____.
A.regular soda makes people lose more weight
B.diet soda does help reduce calories
C.diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food
D.most blood diseases come from diet soda
小題4:The underlined word "They" in the last paragraph probably refers to _____.
A.sweeteners
B.diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers
C.sodas
D.diet sodas and artificial sweeteners

Some plants get so hungry they eat flies, spiders, and even small frogs. What’s more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environment) in every state. In fact, they’re found on every continent except Antarctica.
You’ve probably seen a Venus’ flytrap. It’s often sold in museum gift stores, department stores, and even supermarkets. A small plant, it grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks(莖)are specially modified leaves that act like traps. Inside each trap is a lining of tiny trigger(觸發(fā)) hairs. When an insect lands on them, the trap suddenly shut. Over the course of a week or so, the plant feeds on its catch.
The Venus’ flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice, the editor of the International Carnivorous Plant Society’s Newsletter. Note: Despite any science –fiction stories you might have read, no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.
Dr. Meyers-Rice says a plant is meat-eating, only if it does all four of the following: “attract, kill, digest, and absorb” some forms of insects, including flies, butterflies, and moths. Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants ---well, most of the time.
All green plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis(光合作用). Plants use the sugar to make food. What makes “meat-eating” plants different is their bug-catching leaves. They need insects for one reason: nitrogen(氮). Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can’t obtain any other way. Why almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil “Meat-eating” plants can’t. They live in places where nutrients are hard or almost impossible to get from the soil because of its acidity(酸度). So they’ve come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact, nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to “meat-eating” plants. Never fertilize(施肥)them! But don’t worry, either, if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they’ll grow very slowly.
小題1:According to the passage, carnivorous plants       .
A.only grow in wild fieldB.are rare to see
C.are as common as fliesD.cannot grow on Antarctica
小題2:Venus’ flytrap preys on insects by          .
A.its numerous long stalksB.a container where it grows
C.its insect-catching leaves D.the lining of tiny trigger hairs
小題3:We can conclude from the third paragraph that_____.
A.carnivorous plants are dangerous
B.carnivorous plants are fictional
C.carnivorous plants occasionally eat books
D.carnivorous plants are harmless to humans
小題4:In the eyes of the author, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Carnivorous plants cannot grow in acid soil.
B.Carnivorous plants can grow in nutrient-poor soil.
C.Carnivorous plants will die if they cannot catch any insects
D.Carnivorous plants can get nitrogen from nutrient-rich soil.
