People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn ones living. And of course, there are lots of great things about working for oneself, at home alone, even in a cold studio like mine. What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which is always early, but isnt the same time every day. And nobody tells me what to wear or whether I can take the afternoon off and go to a football match.

But then, I have no one to chat with when Im bored, no one to discuss last nights match with during the office lunch hour. Sure, I can spend the afternoon doing something I enjoy like cycling or gardening if I choose. But the work will still be there when I do finally get back home.

Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether Im bored or not, and once Ive answered the doorbell, its too late my thoughts have been interrupted. No one would dream of calling in if I worked in an office, but I find myself listening to friendstroubles. As they talk, my ideas disappear and I feel increasingly stressed thinking of my work waiting to be done.

However, when I hear the traffic news on the radio, and imagine my friends sitting miserably in their cars in a jam, feeling bored, or waiting unhappily for an overcrowded train in the rain, I realize that I really havent got much to complain about. I find a CD which will start me thinking, turn it up really loudly and begin another picture.

1In the passage the writer is trying to ________.

A. encourage readers to work at home

B. explain why he decides to be an artist

C. describe his working life

D. show how he begins a picture

2What does the writer like about his working life?

A. He has plenty of opportunities for sport.

B. He can do things without being told by others.

C. He neednt work in the morning.

D. He has a comfortable place to work in.

3The writer plays loud music because ________.

A. the traffic outside is noisy

B. it helps him to have ideas

C. it prevents him from feeling bored

D. he doesnt want to hear the doorbell

4Which of these notices would be the most useful for the writer to put on his door?

A. Im working please dont disturb.

B. Please knock before entering.

C. Im listening to music join me.

D. Come in and have a chat.

The job of raising children is a tough one. Children dont come with an instruction handbook. And each child is different. So parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration, not knowing what to do. But in raising children----as in all of life---what we do is influenced by our culture. Naturally then, American parents teach their children basic American values.

To Americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. From infancy, each child may get his or her own room. As children grow, they gain more freedom to make their own choices. Teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment, as well as the friends to share them with. When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careers and marriage partners. Of course, many young adults still seek their parents’ advice and approval for the choices they make. But once they “l(fā)eave the nest” at around 18 to 21 years old, they want to be on their own, not “tied to their mother's apron strings.”

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal. American parents try to treat their children as individuals─ not as extensions of themselves. They allow them to fulfill their own dreams. Americans praise and encourage their children to give them the confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parents becomes more like a friendship among equals. But contrary to popular belief, most adult Americans don’t make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit. Even as adults, they respect and honor their parents.

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare. Mothers have traditionally stayed home with their children. In recent years, though, a growing trend is to put preschoolers in a day care center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings about which type of arrangement is best. Some argue that attending a day care center can be a positive experience for children. Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children. A number of women are now leaving the workforce to become full-time homemakers.

Disciplining children is another area that American parents have different opinions about. Many parents feel that an old-fashioned spanking(一頓打) helps youngsters learn what “No!” means. Others prefer alternate forms of discipline. For example, “time outs” have become popular in recent years. Children in “time out” have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up only when they are ready to act nicely. Older children and teenagers who break the rules may be grounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges at home like TV or telephone use may also be taken away for a while. Although discipline isn't fun for parents or children, it’s a necessary part of training.

Being a parent is a tall order. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense of humor to raise children. Some people are just deciding not to have children at all, since they're not sure it's worth it. But raising children means training the next generation and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?

【題目】Sooner or later, most students are to take some form of English examinations. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better test taking skills. These abilities really have nothing to do with understanding English better. They are skills that make taking the test easier, and therefore provide better results.

Here are some very important—and often ignored—guidelines to taking a test successfully.

Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. Remember one question may only be worth one point! You will become nervous when you fail to find out its answer, making you lose your concentration and leading to worse results.

Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things.

Usually(but not always) a strong first impulse(沖動(dòng)) means we know the answer and we don’t really have to think about it too much. Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes a mistake. This is very common, so be very careful!

If you don’t know the answer, write something. If you are answering a 4 possibility multiple choice question you will still have a 25% chance of being correct!

Taking a test is as much for you as is for your teacher, so never cheat. If you cheat, you don’t help yourself in the long run.
