Melissa Poe was 9 years old when she began a campaign for a cleaner environment by writing a letter to the then President Bush.Through her on efforts, her letter was reproduced on over 250 donated billboards(廣告牌)across the country.

The response to her request for help was so huge that Poe established Kids For A Cleaner Environment(Kids F.A.C.E.)in 1989.There are now 300,000 members of Kids F.A.C.E.world wide and it is the world’s largest youth environmental organization.

Poe has also asked the National Park Service to carry out a “Children’s Forest” project in every national park.In 1992, she was invited one of only six children in the world to speak at the Earth Summit in Brazil as part of the Voices of the future Program. In 1993, she was given a Caring Award for her efforts by the Caring Institute.

Since the organization started, Kids F.A.C.E.members have distributed and planted over 1 million trees!Ongoing tree-planting projects include Kids’ Yards-the creation of backyard wildlife habitats(棲息地)and now Kids F.A.C.E.is involved in the exciting Odyssey, which is a great way to start helping.

“We try to tell kids that it’s not OK to be lazy,” she explains, “You need to start being a response, environmentally friendly person now, right now, before you become a resource-sucking adult.”

Honesty is the best policy, as the English saying goes.Unfortunately, honesty often leaves us when no one is watching, British psychologists reported last week.

Researchers at UK’s Newcastle University set up an experiment in their psychology department’s coffee room.

They set a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk on the counter and hung up a sign listing the price for drinks.People helping themselves to a cup of tea were supposed to put a few cents in the box nearby.

The scientists hung a poster above the money box, and changed each week between pictures of gazing(注視的)eyes and pictures of flowers. The researchers found that staff paid 2.76 times more for their drinks when the image of the eyes was hung.

“We were shocked by the size of the effect,”said Gilbert Roberts, one of the researchers.

Eyes are known to be a powerful perceptual(知覺(jué)的)signal for humans, scientists say.

“Even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make people behave more honestly,”said Melissa Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study.

Researchers believe the effect throws light on our evolutionary past.It may arise from behavioral characteristics that developed when early humans formed social groups to strengthen their chances of survival. For social groups to work, individuals had to co-operate, rather than act selfishly.“There’s an argument that if nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when we’re being watched we should behave better. So people see us as co-operative and behave the same way towards us,”Bateson said.

The new finding indicates that people have a striking response to eyes. That might be because eyes and faces send a strong biological signal we have evolved to respond to, Bateson said.

The finding could be put to practical use.For example, images of eyes could ensure ticket sales on public transport and improve surveillance(監(jiān)視)systems to deter antisocial(反社會(huì))behavior.

(1)

The story is written mainly to ________.

[ ]

A.

warn you to behave honestly whether you are alone or not

B.

explain the root of cheating in exams with no teachers present

C.

describe how the experiment in Newcastle University worked

D.

inform us of a strong reaction that people have to eyes

(2)

The experiment carried out in Newcastle University made researchers think that ________.

[ ]

A.

honesty is not the best policy

B.

evolution has a big influence on our behavior

C.

humans have to form social groups to survive

D.

people are more relaxed when not being watched

(3)

From the text, we know that ________.

[ ]

A.

no one acts selfishly when being watched

B.

the function of eyes is not only biological but social

C.

the image of eyes worked as well as the picture of flowers

D.

a waiter was there serving people drinks in the experiment

Downing the last drop of an expensive famous brand H2O as well as remembering to throw the empty bottle in the recycling bin, makes you feel pretty good about yourself, right? It shouldn't.Even when the bottles are recycled, there are all kinds of other effects of swallowing bottled water, says Melissa Peffers, the air-quality program manager for Environmental Defense.

The containers are often filled in faraway lands, then shipped from abroad, and stored in refrigerators at your local store.Compare that with the influence on environment of turning on your tap, filling a glass, and drinking up!

Anyone who is choosing bottled water for health reasons is misguided, says Peffers, “Most bottled water is just tap water.” And what comes out of your tap is carefully monitored to follow the strict rules.Consider another fact that bottled water is surprisingly expensive, especially when compared with the alternative, which is almost free, and it is surprising that America's desire for bottled water seems impossible to satisfy, reaching nearly 30 billion bottles a year.

“My parents’ generation never had bottled water, ” says Isabelle Silverman, an Environmental Defense legal adviser. She has made a commitment to going ________ bottle free. “You don't need to fetch it home from the store, and it's cheaper, ” she adds.

Bottled water's role as a status symbol needs to change, Peffers points out.So when a waiter at an expensive restaurant offers’’ And what's your drink? ” that's no reason to forget your conviction(信念).“Don't be afraid to say, ‘I'll have tap.’‘Say it loud enough that the other tables nearby can hear you, ” Peffers says. “And then spend that money on a dessert.”

(1)

In the first paragraph, the underlined sentence “It shouldn't.” suggests that people ________.

[ ]

A.

shouldn't feel pleased with finishing the water in the bottle

B.

shouldn't feel good about drinking an expensive brand H2O

C.

shouldn't be content with just recycling empty bottles

D.

shouldn't be satisfied with drinking only bottled water

(2)

According to the author, tap water is ________.

[ ]

A.

as safe as bottled water

B.

morel likely to be polluted

C.

healthier than bottled water

D.

less convenient than bottled water

(3)

The underlined part “going bottle free”(in Para.4)means “________”.

[ ]

A.

making bottled water free

B.

giving up bottled water

C.

recycling used water bottles

D.

providing free water containers

(4)

Why does Peffers ask people to say “I'll have tap.” loudly?

[ ]

A.

To encourage them to set an example for others to follow.

B.

To advise them to save the money for one more dessert.

C.

To remind them to be aware of their social status.

D.

To persuade them to speak confidently in public.
