I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a big company. I told him honestly that the principal reason that I was interviewing with them was my need to keep my family in Boston. My wife had recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some pain for my 16-year-old daughter and me. It was important to me to keep her present high school.

Bruce, the interviewer, was politely kind, but he didn't search any further. He acknowledged(承認(rèn)) my loss and, with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of interviews, Bruce took me to lunch with another manager. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he had lost his wife. And, like me, he had also been married 20 years and had 3 children. I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had and it was almost impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a loved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that, should I need help or just want someone to talk to, I should feel free to give him a call. Whether I got the job or not, he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help.

From that one act of kindness, when he had no idea if we could ever see each other again, he helped our family deal with one of life's greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview process into an act of earing and supporting for another person in a time of extreme need.

According to the passage, the interviewer, Bruce, was very       .

    A. generous         B. kind            C. happy         D. mean

The underlined word "principal" in the first paragraph probably means     .

    A. main            B. unimportant     C. necessary     D. possible

We can infer from this passage that       .

    A. the writer didn't get the job in the company

    B. Bruce made the writer pass the interview

    C. another manager also lost his wife

    D. the business interview was cold

Which of the following statement is NOT true?

    A. The writer's daughter was studying in Boston at that time.

    B. Both the writer and the interviewer experienced the same pain.

    C. Bruce was a senior manager of a big firm.

    D. Bruce wanted to make Mends with him because he gave him his business card and home phone number.

Love cures people—both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.

——Dr. Karl Menninger

I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a major insurance company. I told him   41  that the main reason why I was  42  with them was my need to keep my family in Boston. 科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:20102011黑龍江大慶實(shí)驗(yàn)中學(xué)高三考前得分訓(xùn)練英語(yǔ)試題 題型:閱讀理解

Walking down a path through some woods in Georgia, I saw a small pool of water ahead on the path.I angled my direction to go around it on the part of the path that wasn't covered by water or mud.As I reached the pool, I was suddenly attacked! Yet I did nothing for the attack. It was so unpredictable and from somewhere totally unexpected.I was surprised as well as unhurt though I had been struck four or five times.I backed up a foot and my attacker stopped attacking me.Had I been hurt I wouldn't have found it amusing. And I was laughing. After all, I was being attacked by a butterfly!

Having stopped, laughing, I took a step forward. My attacker rushed me again. He charged towards me at full speed, attempting to hurt me but in vain. For a second time, I took a step backwards while my attacker paused.I wasn't sure what to do.After all, it's just not everyday that one is attacked by a butterfly.I stepped back to look the situation over.My attacker moved back to land on the ground. That's when I discovered why my attacker was charging me only moments earlier. He had a mate and she was dying.

Sitting close beside her, he opened and closed his wings as if to fan her.I could only admire the love and courage of that butterfly in his concern for his mate.He had taken it up on himself to attack me for his mate's sake (緣故), even though she was clearly dying and I was so large. He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life, should I have been careless enough to step on her.His courage in attacking something thousands of times larger and heavier than himself just for his mate's safety seemed admirable.I couldn't do anything other than reward him by walking on the more difficult side of the pool.He had truly earned those moments to be with her, undisturbed.

Since then, I've always tried to remember the courage of that butterfly whenever I see huge barriers facing me.

Why did the writer change his direction while walking down a path?

A.To get close to a butterfly.         B.To look over the bad situation.

2..

What made the man feel funny?

A.Making the attacker pause.           B.Being attacked by a butterfly.

C.Being stepped on by his mate.        D.Discovering the energetic butterfly.

3..

From this experience the man learned        .

A.what he should do when faced with trouble

B.people should show sympathy to the weak

C.how he should deal with attacks

    D.people should protect butterflies

4..
