The decade of the “young old” begins
The year 2020 will mark the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”,【1】. The height of the baby boom, the period of high fertility in rich countries after the second world war, was 1955-60. one might therefore expect peak retirement for baby-boomers in the coming years — except that they are not retiring. By continuing to work, and staying socially engaged, the boomers, in their new guise as the young old, will change the world.
【2】: of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy in rich countries between 2000 and 2015, says the WHO, 3.2 years were enjoyed in good health.
【3】: between 1989 and 2013, the median wealth of families headed by someone over 62 in America rose by 40% to $210,000, while the wealth of all other age groups declined. The over-60s are vital to the tourism industry because they spend much more, when taking a foreign holiday, than younger adults.
【4】. In 2016 just over a fifth of people aged 65-69 were in work in rich countries, a figure that is rising fast. Many bosses and HR departments think productivity falls with age, but a German study found that people who remain at work after the normal retirement age manage to slow the cognitive decline associated with old age and have a cognitive capacity of someone a year and a half younger.
【5】. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after the grandchildren.
A. The yold are also better off
B. In short, the yold are not just any group of old people

D. as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75
E. Health worsens with age, but the yold are resisting the decline better than most
F. The yold are busier, too
G. The yold can’t resist aging

【2】E
【3】A
【4】F
【5】B
選項(xiàng)A是論點(diǎn),與段落內(nèi)容一致,故選A。

Jazz guitarist Joel Harrison came of age in 1960s and 70s' Washington, but he never saw it as a place to build a career as an adventurous, progressive musician. Everywhere he's gone, however, he's taken the sounds of the city with him.
'Growing up in that area allowed me access to a lot of different kinds of music,' says Harrison, 61, who's now based in New York after living in Boston and San Francisco. 'Southern music traditions-old-time music, bluegrass, country as well as jazz and R&B.'

I will never forget the darkness, the pain and strong desire to die.
November arrived grey and busy, and going into an even more stressful. December, I was filled with anxious thoughts.
A visit to my father’s grave is often a good chance to cry and when I leave I feel a little more at peace. But this time was different. I drove home and every night for the rest of that week, I cried.
On Saturday, I watched a TV program teaching baking, and then I started to learn. By the end of the weekend, I had a dining room table covered with sweet treats. I packaged them up in tins, attached a label to each of them with “winter love” on it, and dropped them off on a few of my neighbors’ porches (門廊) before work. It shocked me how much it lightened my mood, seeing a small package lost on a porch.
The thanks I received later from the neighbors made me light up. It felt so good, and it distracted me from my dark thoughts.
By January I had developed a routine: on Sunday I’d bake cookies and package them up, and on Monday I'd deliver them. Every week I added a few different people to my delivery route, baked a few different kinds of cookies.
Somewhere along the way things started showing up on my doorstep a homemade cup, a pair of socks with tiny cookies and even a gift certificate from the local bookstore. Every single one melted my heart. But what I really appreciated was how people began to share their own stories of mental health with me. There is no greater honor than to be trusted with another’s life. I was overwhelmed by the love and care of my community. It humbled me that something so simple had created such incredible kindness. It reminded me that there was good in me, in my neighbors, in the world.
I was shifting into a new season of light, while letting go of a season of darkness. What had begun as an attempt to bring light into my own darkness had been transformed into a story more beautiful than I could have ever dreamed. It reminded me that there is beauty in being kind. That life is tough, but there is a quiet strength in knowing you are not alone.

A.gained trust and care from them
B.added other things to her delivery list
C.felt her life was no longer busy or stressful
D.found some of them had more mental problems than her
【2】What is the author’s attitude toward her future life?
A.Positive.B.Cautious.C.Doubtful.D.Concerned.
【3】What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To express gratitude to caring neighbors.
B.To speak of the benefits of baking cookies at home.
C.To share how being kind helped her regain hope.
D.To show the importance of a closely connected community.

New Mexico has announced a plan to make public colleges and universities free for all people in the state, a Proposal considered one of the most ambitious attempts in education these years.
The plan, if approved, would allow students, regardless of household income, to attend any of the 29 states public colleges and universities. State officials estimate that the program, officially called the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, will help 55,000 students each year attend college.
Calling the plan “the moonshot for higher education,” New Mexico Gov. Michelle LujanGrisham announced it on Wednesday at the New Mexico Higher Education Summit in Albuquerque. “It means better enrollment (注冊). It means better students' success. In the long run, it means economic growth, improved outcomes for New Mexico workers and thinkers and parents,” Lujan Grisham said, “It means a better trained workforce.”
Twenty other states have set up tuition free education programs for two-year community colleges. And New York created a scholarship program to allow students to go to public colleges and universities without paying tuition. But there are household income requirements and other rules, including that receivers live and work in New York for several years after graduating. The New Mexico proposal has no such restrictions. And some experts wonder if the lack of program regulations is one of its disadvantages.
Wil Del Pilar, the vice president for higher education at The Education Trust, said there is a risk that wealthier students will benefit the most in the program, since there are no income requirements. “When you have limited state dollars, I would argue that we should target those dollars toward those who struggle the most to pay,” Del Pilar told NPR.
Like the New York s scholarship program, New Mexico's covers just tuition, not other living costs. To Del Pilar that is a problem. He said the promise of free college takes more than eliminating (取消) tuition. Paying for housing, meals, books and transportation are still challenges for many low-income students, he said.
【1】What's the purpose of the New Mexico plan?
A.To reform the system of education.
B.To improve the quality of education.
C.To attract more students around the world.
D.To make higher education more accessible.
【2】What was Lujan Grisham’s attitude towards the New Mexico plan?
A.A little doubtful.B.A little confused.
C.Full of curiosity.D.Full of confidence.
【3】Compared with the New Mexico plan, the New York program .
A.has fewer restrictionsB.benefits more students
C.has more requirementsD.covers more living costs
【4】What is the problem with the New Mexico plan according to Del Pilar?
A.It is limited to tuition.B.It doesn't include tuition.
C.It opens to all college students.D.It's only available to poor students.
