Empty nest syndrome refers to the grief that many parents feel when their children move out of home. This condition is typically more common in women, who are more likely to have had the role of primary care giver. Unlike the grief experienced when, for example, a loved one dies, the grief of empty nest syndrome often goes unrecognised, because an adult child moving out of home is seen as a normal, healthy event. Besides, in many cases, empty nest syndrome is compounded (混合) by other difficult life events or significant changes happening around the same time, such as retirement or menopause (更年期).
Research suggests that some parents are more susceptible (易受影響的) than others. People who are full-time parents are more often affected than people who also have other duties to perform, such as paid employment. Parents who worry that their children aren’t ready to take on adult responsibilities tend to experience more grief. People who suffer the most from empty nest syndrome tend to have things in common. They found moving out of home a difficult and emotional experience or their marriage is unstable or unsatisfactory.
Parents experiencing empty nest syndrome of course face new challenges. They need to establish a new kind of relationship with their adult children. They have to become a couple again, after years of sharing the home with children. And it’s not an easy job to fill the emptiness in the daily life created by absent children. Also, it can be difficult to find understanding from others, who consider children moving out to be a natural, healthy event.
Although many parents face the grief of empty nest syndrome, help and support is available.

64. A. 推理判斷題。由the grief of empty nest syndrome often goes unrecognised及文中對(duì)其通常不為人們所認(rèn)識(shí)的原因分析可推知A正確。

When young children are learning to ride a bicycle, they require that their parents hold on to the back of the bike so that they gain confidence and won’t fall off.
However, when children leave to go to college, or get married, parents must accept that their children are riding off into their own future. At this time, parents shouldn’t stand back and with the children gone, they are left with an empty nest. How can parents get through this period of life?
The first thing you should do is nothing at all.You should actually take some time to rest since your child was born.Just relax and reward yourself for the work you put into your child.
Taking some time for yourself will allow you to adjust to the change and figure out how you really feel about your child’s departure(離開(kāi)).You shouldn’t compare how you feel with how other people feel, as everyone’s experience of an empty nest is different.
Exercise is a great mood lifter.A physical fitness program may have been one of the first sacrifices(犧牲)you made when your child came along; now, with fewer duties, you’ll have time to hit the gym regularly. If you have a friend who also has become an empty nester recently, you may have found a new companion. Not only will you get the chance to share dealing with tips, you’ll also create social opportunities for yourself, which will get you out of that empty house if you need to.
We all have those things that we say we’ll do or learn “someday”.If you’re an empty nester, the “someday” might just be now.
If you’re not sure exactly what to do in all your spare time, take your time and think about it.It will, however, probably be easier to figure out your dream when you’re out.Try exploring a nearby museum or attraction you’ve never visited.
Many parents may fear an empty nest because they worry that their little birds have flown away forever.Try setting up a regular phone date with your child.A once-a-week call may make you feel satisfied while giving your child a reasonable degree of freedom.

At the railway stations all across Britain next week, groups of students will gather with their backpacks to wait for the trains that will carry them home for Christmas. This is a large movement of human beings as before, but with more contradictory traffic flows, so that trains filled with the young pass each other travelling in every direction.
At first, I went home every weekend with my washing, but then those visits became less regular. How did I let my parents know I was coming? They had no phone. Perhaps I wrote to them (“Expect me with dirty shirts this Friday afternoon”), but more likely I didn’t let them know, and just turned up or didn’t turn up, not understanding that my parents’ hopes of seeing me were a greater disappointment of my carelessness than a spoiled tea.
And in all this I suspect I was typical (有代表性的), at least of young men. As for our fathers and mothers, none of them talked of “empty-nest syndrome (綜合癥)”, even though its possible effect that the main human duty is to protect and feed the young would have suited their generation better than ours. Then, the feeling of loss went without a name. Today, it’s a condition with remedies, which will make parents feel more enjoyable in their life, The Mayo Clinic, for example, suggests you try to maintain regular contact with your children through “visits, phone calls, emails, texts or video chats”. If you feel unhappy, lean on (depend on … for support) loved ones or your mental health providers. Above all, stay positive: “Thinking about the extra time and energy that you might have to devote to your marriage or personal interests after your last child leaves home, it might help you adapt to this major life change.”
What can’t be denied, however, is that children often leave home. In modern societies, this is what they do. Christmas is the very time they can be depended on to return. For the non-religious, that may be this season’s true comfort and significance.

While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon is commonly known as “ Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢綜合癥). In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves.
The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “ distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for “ Empty Nest Syndrome”.
【小題1】According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by ________.
A.their earlier experience of feeling lonely |
B.the unfavorable living conditions in their native countries |
C.the common worry about their income |
D.the geographical distance between parents and children |
A.live in the countries with more money |
B.seek a better place for their aged parents |
C.continue their studies abroad |
D.realize their dreams in foreign countries |
A.they do not hold to the value of duty at all |
B.they can give some help to their parents back home |
C.they cannot do what they should for their parents |
