Good Housekeeping has discovered that even if a child wear a helmet when she bikes, or skates, it may not protect her from a serious head injury.
Every year, 390,000 children under age 15 go to hospital emergency rooms with bike-related injuries. Of that number, about one third children suffer head injuries and an estimated 200 die. By wearing a helmet, a child can reduce her risk of injury by as much as 85 percent. But remember —— a bicycle helmet must fit properly to be safe. Here are five steps to making sure your child's helmet fits properly.
1) If you haven't bought your child's helmet already, you might want to consider one with a rear stabilizer(穩(wěn)定桿). A rear stabilizer holds the back of the head gently and helps the helmet stay correctly positioned.
2) The helmet should fit closely and shouldn't slide from side to side or front to back. If your child can put two fingers on both temples inside the helmet, it's too big. Try a smaller size. But if the next size down is too small, use the fit pads(護(hù)墊). Fit pads come in different sizes and attach to the helmet with Velcro.
3) Tell your child to open her mouth widely and ask if she can feel the helmet push down onto the top of her head. If she can't, you need to readjust her helmet.
4) To prevent strap slippage, wind a rubber band around the strap where it meets the fastener.
5) Recheck the fit regularly.
You should replace the bicycle helmet:
If she has been in an accident with it.
If the buckle(金屬扣) breaks or if a piece breaks off.
If it doesn't have a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, American Society for Testing and Materials, or Snell Memorial Foundation sticker.
If it doesn't fit correctly. Even if the helmet fit perfectly two years ago, it might be too small now.
1.Who is this passage mainly written for?
A. Children. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. helmet producers.
2.What does the author mainly want to stress in the second paragraph?
A. The bike-related injury is a serious threat to the children.
B. The bicycle helmets must fit properly while the children are biking.
C. It’s necessary for the children to wear helmets while biking.
D. Many students suffer bike-related injuries every year.
3.If a girl finds a helmet a little bit big for her head, what should she do?
A. She must buy a smaller size.
B. She can use some fit pads.
C. She can put fingers on both temples inside the helmet.
D. She must make helmet slide from side to side.
4.Phil White, a father, found the buckle of his girl’s helmet broken, he can_______
A. buy a new bicycle helmet for her
B. mend the bicycle helmet himself
C. continue to use the bicycle helmet
D. throw away the broken buckle

After their 20-year-old son hanged himself during his winter break from the University of Arizona five years ago, Donna and Phil Satow wondered what signs they have overlooked, and started asking other students for answers.
What grew from this soul searching was Ulifeline (www. Ulifeline. org), a Web site where students can get answers to questions about depression by logging on through their universities. The site has been adopted as a resource by over 120 colleges, which can customize it with local information, and over 1.3 million students have logged on with their college ID’s.
“It is a very solid Web site that raises awareness of suicide, de-stigmatizes mental illness and encourages people to seek the help they need,”said Paul Grayson, the director of counseling services at New York University, which started using the service nearly a year ago.
The main component of the Web site is the Self-screening program developed by Duke University Medical Center that tests students to determine whether they are at risk for depression, suicide and disorders like anorexia and drug dependences. Besides helping students, the services compiles anonymous student date, offering administrators an important window onto the mental health of its campus.
The site provides university users with links to local mental health services, a catalog of information on prescription drugs and side effects, and access to Go Ask Alice, a vast archive developed by Columbia University with hundreds of responses to anonymously posted inquires from college students worldwide. For students concerned about their friends, there is a section that describes warning signs for suicidal behavior and depression.
Yet it is hard to determine how effective the service is. The anonymity of the online service can even play out as a negative. “There is no substitute for personal interaction(個(gè)人互動(dòng)才能解決),” said Dr. Lanny Berman, executive director of the American Association of Suicidology, based in Washington.
Ulifeline would be the first to say that its service is no replacement for an actual therapist. “The purpose is to find out if there are signs of depression and then direct people to the right places,” said Ron Gibori, executive director of Ulifeline.
Mrs. Satow, who is still involved with Ulifeline, called it “a knowledge base” that might have prevented the death of her son, Jed. “If Jed’s friends had known the signs of depression, they might have seen something,” she said.

3. Go Ask Alice as mentioned in the passage is________
A.a(chǎn) side effect caused by some prescription drugs |
B.intended to counsel college students in mental problems |
C.a(chǎn) collection of medical responses from students the world over |
D.meant to describe the various signs of mental disorders |
4.The underlined sentence of the seventh paragraph implies that ______
A.only actual therapy can ensure adequate treatment |
B.the help given by the web service is doubtful |
C.doctors have expressed a negative view of the service |
D.a(chǎn) therapist’s office is the first place for the depressed to go |

Shower every day? Rinse (漂洗) after brushing teeth? These “healthy” habits could be very bad for you. Could your daily routine be ruining your health? We all know that smoking, drinking and bingeing (狂飲,狂吃) on junk food are behaviors to avoid if we want to keep fit—but an increasing amount of research is emerging to suggest other seemingly good habits could also be bad for us. Here are some daily sins, and what we can do about them.
Daily sin 1: shower every day
The modern overemphasis on personal hygiene (衛(wèi)生,保健) could do harm to our skin, according to Dr. Nick Lowe, consultant doctor at the Cranley Clinic in London. He says, “Using hot water combined with harsh soaps can strip the skin of its oils, resulting in dryness, crashing and even infection.”
If the prospect of skipping a daily shower horrifies you, at least make sure you wash with cooler water, he says. If you have a tendency towards dry skin, use a soap-free shower gel or watery cream.
Daily sin 2: sleeping eight hours a day
The notion of getting eight hours of solid sleep each night is a “modern convention” that could leave you feeling more tired, says Professor Jim Horne, of Lough borough University’s Sleep Research Centre. “A short four to 15-minute power nap can be as effective as an extra hour at night.” He adds, “This modern notion that waking in the middle of the night is a bad thing can actually be destructive to the quality of our sleep. For instance we wake at 3 a.m. and lie there becoming anxious about not sleeping, whereas we should simply get up and occupy our minds with something distracting but relaxing—such as doing a jigsaw (拼圖) or reading a book—until our bodies tell us we’re ready to sleep again.”
Daily sin 3 : rinsing after brushing teeth
Fight the urge to rinse after cleaning your teeth, says dentist Dr. Phil Stemmer, from The Fresh Breath Centre in London. “Rinsing washes away the protective fluoride (氟化物) coating left by the toothpaste, which would otherwise add hours of protection.” And whatever you do don’t clean your teeth straight after eating, he says. “The best routine is to brush your teeth before meals, and then freshen up after using an alcohol-free mouthwash.”
59. Which can be a proper title of the passage?
A. Several bad habits in our daily life.
B. Several bad habits about taking showers.
C. Do’s and don’ts.
D. Sleeping too much is a sin.
60. What is a good way of taking showers according to the passage?
A. Take a hot water shower every day.
B. Use harsh soaps when taking showers in order to get rid of the oil on your skin.
C. Use cooler water if you take showers very frequently.
D. Always avoid soap when taking showers.
61. Which of the following statements on sleeping is right according to the passage?
A. Getting 8 hours of sound sleep is quite necessary for a fresh work day.
B. A half-hour snap is as effective as an extra hour at night.
C. It is a very bad habit to wake in the middle of night and read a book.
D. Getting 8 hours of sleep actually will make you feel less fresh than 7 hours of sleep do.
62. We should not rinse immediately after brushing teeth because__.
A. the mouthwash will react with something left by the toothpaste.
B. the mouthwash will take away something left by the toothpaste.
C. the mouthwash will left a coat of fluoride on the teeth.
D. the mouthwash will be useless if the teeth have already be brushed.
