She 4the next day that the girls had been troublemakers at several other schools and they were being given one more5at a new beginning.
Edie’s 6said ,“Be kind to your enemies, Edie.”She 7said, “When the girls8to threatened you next time ,tell them you want to be their friend.”“Are you9enough to do that?”Edie’s mother asked. The 10girl answered, “Yes, Mom, I’11 try.”
Every day, the girls pushed Edie and called her names and 11to get in a poke(戳) or two. Each time, Edie looked up at them and said, “ I’d really like to be your12 .”But it seemed that this wasn’t working.

Just like I14did, I said I’d really like to be their friend, and one of the15said ,‘Okay, Edie, we 16and we’11 be your friends’”A short time later, Edie sat at a table with them and17their tutor (私人教師).

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d1known. When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t2lives, he was planting trees.
The good doctor had some3theories on planting trees. He believed in “No pains, no gains”. He never4his new trees, which was5many people. Once I asked why. He6that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each following tree generation will7weaker and weaker. So you have to make things8for them. He talked about how watering trees9shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in10of water. I came to understand that he meant deep roots were to be11. I planted a couple of trees a few years back and I took good care of them. Two years of12has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows, they13and tremble their branches. Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs’. The lack of water seemed to14them in ways comfort and ease never could.
I used to15for my sons that their lives will be easy. But16I’ve been thinking that it’s time to17my prayer. I know my children are going to meet18, and I’m praying they will be strong. The prayer for comfort is seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots,19when the winds blow, we won’t be20away.

I was reading a notice at the entrance to my college dormitory, when a girl came up to me and said, “Do you 1 a quarter? I’m one short of putting my laundry(剛洗好的衣物) in the dryer(烘干機). ”
I 2 to think about it for a few seconds and considered whether I’d be 3 to give a quarter away. I found myself 4 her, thinking about why she didn’t 5 four quarters down from her room with her, as if she had 6 to be one short so she could ask someone else for it. (Later I knew 7 that was not the case.)
But I didn’t have any reason to 8her. Then I responded, “Yeah, I think I have the only one,” though fully 9 that I had three. “Here you go,” I said with a smile. “Thanks,” she responded, 10 that she could have clean clothes to wear the next morning.
A few moments later the girl 11 and gave a dollar bill to me. “Why are you giving this to me?” I asked, 12. “Oh, because you were kind to me, so I’m just giving back the 13.”
It’s just a dollar, but I felt it was 14. More so because I hadn’t given that quarter with such nice 15, the way she gave that dollar to me. I felt like it was the first time I ever 16 something greater in return for something so17 that I had given. I saw the power of kindness and generosity in a 18way.
I thought it was so worth giving that quarter away. Giving and 19 don’t usually happen hand-in-hand, 20 when it does, like it did this time, it makes one think about why generosity is so powerful in the first place.

Thanks to a combination of young businessmen, large numbers of university students and revitalization (新生) efforts by the local and national governments, today’s Nanjing has an1of youthful exuberance (繁茂) that would have been 2only a few decades ago.3, the city, a booming city of 6.5 million on the banks of the Yangtze River some 185 miles west of Shanghai, bears4resemblance to the former capital of China that suffered the worst cruelty and violence of World War II.
5Nanjing has shown a remarkable capacity for reinvention during its 2,500-year history. And in recent years, the city has moved6its tragic past to become a vital engine of China’s economic growth, thanks7to its position in the middle of China’s prosperous eastern seaboard. Within the city, two metro lines were built in the last few years; 15 more are planned to begin service by 2030.
Signs of Nanjing’s11wealth and optimism can be seen everywhere. In the heart of the downtown Xinjiekou district, a bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen,12the father of modern China, looks13over a busy14area.
There is perhaps no more15symbol of the city’s transformation than the Zifeng Tower, a 1,480-foot skyscraper that opened its doors last May.16offices, restaurants and an InterContinental hotel, the tower is the second-tallest building in China and billed as the seventh-tallest in the world.
Underlying all this development is a large Chinese and17student population — there are several major universities, plus a branch of Johns Hopkins’s international studies school. In fact, art and music 18in all sorts of places.
