My father had always been an alert observer of human character. Within seconds of meeting someone, he could sum up their strengths and weaknesses. It was always a challenge to see if any of my boyfriends could pass Dad’s test. None did. Dad was always right—they didn’t pass my test either. After Dad died, I wondered how I’d figure it out on my own.

That’s when Jack arrived on the scene. He was different from any other guy I’d dated. He could sit for hours on the piano bench with my mother, discussing some composers. My brother Rick loudly announced that Jack wasn’t a turkey like the other guys I’d brought home. Jack passed my family’s test. But what about Dad’s?

Then came my mother’s birthday. The day he was supposed to drive, I got a call. “Don’t worry,” he said, “but I’ve been in an accident. I’m fine, but I need you to pick me up.”

When I got there, we rushed to a flower shop for something for Mom. “How about gardenias(梔子花)?” Jack said, pointing at a beautiful white corsage (胸花). The florist put the corsage in a box.

The entire ride, Jack was unusually quiet. “Are you all right?” I asked. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking,” he said. “I might be moving.” Moving? Then he added, “Moving in with you.” I nearly put the car on the sidewalk. “What?” I asked. “I think we should get married,” he said. He told me he’d planned his proposal in a fancy restaurant, but after the accident, he decided to do it right away. “Yes,” I whispered. We both sat dumbfounded, tears running down our cheeks. I’d never known such a tender moment. If only Dad were here to give his final approval.

“Oh, let’s just go inside.” Jack laughed. My mother opened the door. “Happy Birthday!” we shouted. Jack handed the box to her. She opened it up. Suddenly, her eyes were filled with tears. “Mom, what’s wrong?” I asked. “I’m sorry,” she said, wiping her eyes. “This is only the second gardenia corsage I’ve ever received. I was given one years ago, long before you kids were born.” “From who?” I asked. “Your father,” Mom said. “He gave me one right before we were engaged.” My eyes locked on Jack’s as I blinked away(眨掉) tears. Dad’s test? I knew Jack had passed.

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, and red? If you do, you must be an optimist(樂(lè)觀主義者), a leader, or an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grey and blue? If you do, then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined. You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don't choose our favorite colors as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

Colors do impact our moods----there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. Light and bright colors make people not only happier but also more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark grey.

Remember that if you feel low, you can brighten your day with a few colorful things. Remember that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike as well.

1. According to psychologists, _________.

A. anyone can choose his color preference in his life

B. no one can choose his color preference in his life

C. anyone is born with his color preference

D. no one is born with his color preference

2. According to the passage,__________.

A. if you enjoy life, you must like yellow, orange and red

B. if you are quiet, you must prefer gray or blue

C. if you love green, you usually do what you have decided

D. if you love pink, you often go to flower shops

3. The underlined word “impact” in paragraph 2 can be replaced by “_______”.

A. influence B. ruin C. reflect D. explore

4. Psychologists study the meaning of color preference because_________.

A. colors may decide the results of our work and study

B. colors may affect the emotional states of the people

C. color preference can tell you who your friends are

D. color preference can help you to see through your enemies

Loma just had to get in touch with someone:“I had to tell my best friend something important. I tried calling her but I couldn’t get through. So I sent her an e-mail and then I spoke to her on MSN. Without technology I would not have been able to tell her. ”

Staying connected with friends and family is important for us. That’s why we asked our readers to tell us how cell-phones, e-mail, blogs, text messaging, and personal pages help them keep in touch. More than 1,500 responded.

Most of them told us they couldn’t live without technology:80%of teens said they need technology to stay in touch. Almost 30%said they’d be completely out of their friends without their cell-phones and other methods of communication.

What do they do when they’ve got news they need to share now? Most teens say they try to reach their friends by phone. But if they don’t reach them, they use QQ, e-mails, and text messaging to get the words out.

Lots of people use one way of communication—like text messaging—to get a friend’s attention and then use another where they can talk more. “My friends and I always tell each other everything that happens. So I send them text messages to tell them to come online so we can talk about it,” said Sabeiha.

“When planning to get together with friends”, Julian said, “the easiest and fastest way I know is to send a text message to my contact group.” Jocelyn said. “If I want to go to see a movie with a few friends, I usually send text message to them. By telephone, you have to call every single friend one by one. But text messaging allows you to send the same message to as many as you’d like, which saves a lot of time.

1. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. E-mails. B. Blogs.

C. Personal pages. D. Personal letters.

2.What do most young people use first when they have news to tell their friends?

In America, Virginia Beach has all the elements of a classic seaside resort(度假勝地): brilliant beaches, a lively boardwalk, plenty of restaurants and nightspots, and amusement rides sure to appeal to kids. Many believe Virginia Beach is at its best in the off-season, when the town is less crowded but the weather is still mild.

Meanwhile, some safety tips should be followed, to enjoy the happiness and excitement the beach offers.

The number one safety tip concerns ocean safety: pay attention to Flag conditions posted on the lifeguard stands. Lifeguard post a red flag to warn when the ocean water is dangerous. Take them seriously! Tourists from land-locked regions are particularly easily attracted by the magic of the waves. However, a calm ocean can become risky without warning. Make sure you swim near a lifeguard. Swimming without lifeguard protection is almost five times as great as drowning at a beach with lifeguards.

Never swim alone. Many drownings involved single swimmers. When you swim with someone else, if one of you has a problem, the other may be able to get help, including signaling for assistance from others.

Don’t fight the current. The facts show that some 80% of rescues by lifeguards at ocean

beaches are caused by currents. These currents are formed by surf and gravity, because once surf pushes water up the slope of a beach, gravity pulls it back. This can create concentrated rivers of water moving offshore. If you are caught in a rip (撕裂的)current, don’t fight it by trying to swim directly to shore. Instead, swim parallel to shore until you feel the current relax, then swim to shore. Most rip current are narrow and a short swim parallel to shore will help bring you to safety.

1.When coming to Virginia Beach, children cannot enjoy the happiness of______.

A.walking on the road made of wood B.joining the nightspots

A.After autumn school term beginning

C.some 80% people drowning by the currents are rescued by lifeguards

Many of the world’s countries have reached or are approaching zero population growth (ZPG) .Nearly all such lands are economically well developed. They include much of Europe(including Russia),the United States,Canada,Japan.a(chǎn)nd Australia. As the rate of natural increase(RNI)declines, two things happen.First, the population begins to decline if the loss is not balanced by immigration.Second,a country’s population ages because there are fewer births.

Is achieving ZPG good or bad? What happens when a country’s population begins to drop? Many people, after all, believe that population decline is a good thing. But is it good for everyone? Does everyone agree?

An aging population can create many problems.Senior citizens require more health care and medical attention.Rather than paying into retirement programs, they begin to draw from their pensions. In the US,the Social Security program, according to many experts, will be used up by 2018.It will pay out more money than it takes in.Additionally, a great number of jobs go begging in search of people willing or entry level positions that pay low wages. With an able to do them. Many of these jobs are aging population, who will fill them? At the other extreme, some positions require a large number of training and highly specialized skills.Who will fill these positions as retirees leave the workforce?

The answer to the problem of declining and aging population is simple:increased migration.Today many people, particularly those from less developed countries, are migrating in search of employment. Many are willing to take jobs that cannot(or will not) be filled by the domestic population.Others are well educated and highly skilled. Both groups contribute to a country’s economy progress in many ways.Further, they add to the richness of a country’s culture.Of greatest importance, perhaps,is the fact that they have become absolutely necessary to the economy of many lands. As you can see,for many countries and for most immigrants, migration is a win—win situation.

1.In the writer’s view, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Not everyone agrees that achieving ZPG is absolutely good.

B.Achieving ZPG is every country’s aim in spite of its side effects.

C.Achieving ZPG is bad for senior citizens.

D.Achieving ZPG is good for employment.

2.According to the passage, the best way to solve the problem of declining and aging population is

A.to improve the health care system

B.to increase RNI

C.to increase employment

D.to increase migration

3.The underlined words “the domestic population’’ can be replaced by

A.people within the country

B.people from developing countries

C.people without a college education

D.people living abroad

4.The main idea of the last paragraph is .

B.the problem of declining and aging population
