At the outbreak of war in September 1939, Doreen Luke was fifteen years old and had just begun work as an apprentice (學徒) in a department store selling clothing and household goods in her hometown of Bodmin in Cornwall. Doreen recalls the first day of war, “My mother was in the process of cooking the Sunday dinner when the Prime Minister announced over the radio that we were at war with Germany… From then on everything changed in our lives. Suddenly there was a different atmosphere.”
During the first years of the war, Doreen was part of a concert party that entertained civilians and service personnel in Cornwall. Although Doreen made effort for the war through her work in entertainment, she was eager to become involved with the war effort in a more direct way, “ My seventeenth birthday came in January 1941. Many of my friends were joining the Forces. I was becoming very restless. Realizing that the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force(WAAF)was recruiting (招募) wireless operators, Doreen quickly made up her mind. At the age of eighteen, she received her call-up papers and became a member of the WAAF. After one year’s training, Doreen became a wireless operator at Bletchley Park and began work in the Auto Room. Gregory Kloehn digs through dustbins every day,but not for the reason that most people would think. He isn’t homeless. In fact he is trying to help the homeless.
Gregory began his life as a sculptor. But he often felt that his sculptures.Which just stood in rich people’s houses for years, lacked a meaningful purpose. So in 201l he decided to put his artistic energies into creating homes to sell—not ordinary homes but small structures built entirely from recycled materials.
The thought of creating homes for the homeless didn’t occur to him until the year 2013, when a homeless couple asked him for a tarp(防水布).Instead of a tarp,Gregory offered them something better:a small home with a water tank,a kitchen and a trap for waste. They were so grateful that Gregory decided to focus his efforts on helping house the homeless population in his city. And soon his“Homeless Homes Project”was started.
Before starting a new home,Gregory, goes hunting for materials by digging through dustbins.Everything he finds is usable—refrigerator doors become house doors;washing machine doors often serve as windows, and the tops of cars become strong roofs. He put wheels at the bottom for users to move their homes around easily. Each home takes two to three days to make.
So far Gregory has donated dozens of homes to the city's most needy. While his small low- cost mobile homes are not the final solution to the problem of homelessness, they are really practical and do provide a warm and safe place for the homeless to stay in.They are simply a way for one man to do something nice for those in need of some help.
Gregory has written a book titled Homeless Architecture, where he explains techniques to build those homes and he is now working on weekend workshops.“A lot of people who hear about what I’m doing want to get involved,”he said.“Maybe we can meet someplace and put a couple of homes together.”

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘dog’ and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat’.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets ─ to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
1.Some cats and dogs may fight when ________.
A. they misunderstood each other's signals
B. they look away from each other
C. they are cold to each other
D. they are introduced at an early age
2.What is found surprising about cats and dogs?
A. They eat and sleep each other.
B. They learn to speak each other's language.
C. They observe each other's behaviors.
D. They know something from each other's voices.
3.It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs ________.
A. have common interests
B. have a common body language
C. are less different than was thought
D. are less intelligent than was expected
4.What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?
A. We should live in peace with animals.
B. We should know more about animals.
C. We should learn to live in harmony.
D. We should learn more body languages.
