For generations of pupils, learning key historical dates, places, and names off by heart has been the base of academic success. But for today’s youngsters, dull rote learning(死記硬背) is meaningless because such basic facts are only a mouse click via Google, Wikipedia and online libraries, according to writer Don Tapscott.
Tapscott, author of the best-selling book Wikinomics and a supporter of the “net generation”, suggests a better approach would be to teach children to think creatively so they could learn to understand and use the knowledge available online.
He said, “Teachers are no longer the fountain(源泉) of knowledge ; the Internet is. Kids should learn about history to understand the world and why things are the way they are. But they don’t need to know all the dates.”
Tapscott dismissed(摒棄) the idea that his approach is anti-learning. Instead, he argued that the ability to learn new things is more important than ever in a world where you have to process new information at lighting speed. And he believes that the old-fashioned model of education still common in today’s schools, involving having facts off pat, was designed for the industrial age. He said, “This might have been good for the mass production economy, but it isn’t suitable for the digital economy, or for the ‘net generation’ mind. Children are going to have to reinvent their knowledge base many times. So for them memorizing facts and figures is a waste of time.”
Tapscott added the brains of today’s youngsters work differently to their parents’, and that multi tasking with digital equipment, such as using the Internet while listening to their MP3 players, can help them to develop critical thinking skills.
Schools are increasingly introducing more independent study and activities, with pupils learning at their own pace and focusing on what interests them most.
68. What is important for the “net generation” in Tapscott’s opinion?
A. Using online knowledge creatively.
B. Memorizing facts and figures.
C. Learning to respect teachers.
D. Teaching their parents to think creatively.
69. The underlined part “having facts off pat” in Para. 4 probably means _______.

The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture to help perform operations for about 4,000 years without putting the patient to sleep. This involves inserting(插入)flexible needles (針)into certain parts of the body. The needles used are available in a number of stores in China and everyone may buy them.
To learn how to use needle takes about one month of training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the acupuncture knows how to insert the needles so the needles themselves are not painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. The needles are not necessarily inserted near the place where the pain is to be prevented. In the past, a particular operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body. But now this operation requires only 3 or 4 needles.
Today the Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. They are trying to develop a convincing theory to explain how the needles work in preventing pain, or, why a needle in the wrist(手腕), for example, would prevent the pain in the area of the mouth.
A patient who needs an operation is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients choose acupuncture because there is no sickness after the operation whereas(然而,反之) the chemical may make the patient sick for a few hours or a day.
1.Acupuncture is a kind of _______.
A. medical needles          B. medical equipment
C. medical technique        D. medical examination

B. should insert the needles where the pain is to be prevented
C. needs to be trained for a short period of time
D. must use fewer needles than in the past
3. According to the 3rd paragraph, we can infer _______.
A. people must insert a needle in the wrist to prevent the pain in the mouth
B. people come to realize the shortcomings of the acupuncture
C. people are convinced to use the acupuncture to cure diseases
D. people need to make deeper research into the acupuncture
4.Nowadays, more and more people prefer having acupuncture because _______.
A. acupuncture has no side effects after the operation

When did you last see a polar bear(北極熊)? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps?  If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago,  you would have seen a whole polar bear club.  These "Polar Bears" are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water.  That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a little higher.  The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60.  Members must satisfy two requirements.  First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club.  Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors don't agree about the medical effects of cold-winter swimming.  Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops.  Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming.  They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循環(huán)系統(tǒng))because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm.  Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water.  A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all year round;  they find it fun and relaxing.  As one 70-year-old woman says,"When I go into water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

Part Ⅰ starts with a brief introductory chapter and then takes up Style and Organization, covering them in that order because skill or lack of skill in style affects all writing, while much technical writing is so short as to offer no problems of organization. These chapters are followed by one on Mechanics, covering matters of form that are peculiar(獨有) to technical writing or else crop up in it with abnormal frequency.
The chapter on Special Problems, which follows, performs a double function. It provides writing assignments that may be used while the study of style, organization, and mechanics is still under way, and it explains ways of handling certain problems that may arise during the writing of reports, proposals, and other longer forms. We have also expanded the treatment of technical articles — recognizing the potential contribution of article writing to the career of the writer and the value of the article to science and technology.
In Part Ⅱ, a change of emphasis at one point is reflected in the new title for Chapter 8, Nonformal Reports — Their Variation in Form and Purpose, which was formerly called Special Types of Reports. Though certain special types of reports are still discussed, additional emphasis is given to the fact that there does not exist any universally accepted set of types, under which all reports can be classified.
Two other extensive changes have been made in Part Ⅱ: The chapter on Proposals, which first appeared in the second edition, has been rewritten and substantially expanded so as to cover that important subject more thoroughly. Also, an entirely new chapter, Oral Presentation of Technical Information, has been added. Though a study of this chapter is no substitute for training in public speaking, we believe that its recommendations can nevertheless be of substantial assistance to those who use this book on the numerous occasions when they will be called upon to present their ideas in person before a small group or a large audience.
?1.The passage is most probably a preface to ____.
?A. a technical writing handbook   B. a handbook on composition
?C. a book on a literary writing    D. a scientific paper

? D. Introduction—Style—Proposals—Special Problems—Mechanics
?3.You can find some writing exercises in ____.
? A. the chapter on Organization        B. the chapter on Style

? A. Part Ⅰ of the first edition
? B. Part Ⅱ of the second edition
? C. Part Ⅰ of the second edition

?5. Which of the following is not true of Part Ⅱ of the new edition?
? A. There isn’t the chapter on Special Types of Reports.
? B. The chapter on Oral Presentation of Technical Information is rewritten and expanded.

Americans are thinking about national education standards recently developed by teachers and other education experts. The National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) led the effort.
The United States, unlike other nations, has never had the same school standards across the country. What is the reason? Education is not discussed in the Constitution. That document limits the responsibilities of the federal government. Other responsibilities, like education, fall to the individual states.
Local control of education probably was a good idea two hundred years ago. People stayed in the same place and schools knew what students needed to learn. But today, people move to different cities. And some people work at jobs that did not exist even twenty years ago.
Many American educators say that getting a good education should not depend on where you live. They say that some states have lowered their standards in order to increase student scores on tests required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
Kara Schlosser is communications director for the Council of Chief State School Officers. She says the new standards clearly state what a student should be able to do to be successful in college and work.
Forty-eight states have already shown approval for the standards. Two states reject the idea. Critics(批評家) say that working toward the same standards in every state will not guarantee(保證) excellence for all. Some educators in Massachusetts say adopting the proposal will hurt their students because the state standards are even higher. Others say the change will be too costly, requiring new textbooks and different kinds of training for teachers. Still others fear federal interference or control.
Supporters say the standards are goals and do not tell states or teachers how to teach. They also say the federal government is not forcing acceptance. However, approving the standards will help states qualify(合格) for some federal grant money.
60.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Local Control of Education Standards out of Date
B.American National Education Standards under Consideration
C.Education Standards in Each State – Good or Bad
D.Acceptance of the New Standards in the United States

A.Because local standards are limited.
B.Because it is required by the federal government.
C.Because people today moves among states more often than before.
D.Because America has never has the same school standards thought the country.
62.Some people are against the national education standards because__________.
A.the standards are higher than those of each state
B.the are nor yet prepared for the new standards
C.the standards may prevent some students gaining excellence
D.they don’t want the federal government to train their teachers
63.If a state agrees to accept the motional standards, it will probably get__________.
A.more students             B.a(chǎn)dvice on how to improve teaching
C.better textbooks             D.money from the federal government
