Students often meet with questions as follows: bullied by someone, worried about a weak subject, puzzled by family problems or concerned about pets at home. All the questions above may make you not concentrated on your study. Who can you turn to if you are such an unlucky student? A great person to share your thoughts and feelings with is your school counsellor(顧問(wèn)).
Add school counsellors to the list of people you can turn to when you need help. They know how to listen and can help kids with life's challenges(挑戰(zhàn)). Counsellors have special training in how to help kids solve problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves. That doesn't mean your counsellor will wave a magic wand and the problem will go away. But it does mean he or she will help you cope with(應(yīng)付) it. Coping is an important word to know. Sometimes, kids and grown-ups have difficult problems. Coping means that someone is trying to handle these problems and make things better.

Your school counsellor is available for you and wants to make your school experience the best it can be. The counsellor's job is to take your problem seriously and help you find a solution. The counsellor also wants to help you learn as much as you can in class, be a contributing member of the school community, and be a positive influence on your environment.

Are teachers doing their jobs?

The speaker,a teacher from a college in California, addressed a supportive audience.Heads nodded in agreement when he said,“High school English teachers are not doing their jobs.” He described the inability of his students, all high school graduates who can use language only at a grade 9 level.I was unable to determine from his answers to my questions how this grade 9 level had been set up.

In my view, what the speaker was really saying is that he is no longer young;he has been teaching for sixteen years, and is able to think and speak in a sensible and reasonable way.

My point is that the frequent complaint (指責(zé)) of one generation about the one immediately following it is unavoidable. It is also human nature to look for the reasons for our dissatisfaction. Before English became a school subject in the late nineteenth century,it was difficult to find the focus of the blame for language imperfection. But since then,English teachers have been under continuous attack.

The complainers think they have hit upon an original idea.As their own ability to use the language improves, they notice that young people do not have this same ability.Unaware that their own ability has developed through the years, they assume the new generation of young people must be hopeless in this case.To the eyes and ears of sensitive adults, the language of the young always seems not good enough.

Since this concern about the decline and fall of the English language is not seen as something happens to a generational but rather as something new and strange to today’s young people,t naturally follows that today’s English teachers cannot be doing their jobs.Otherwise, young people would not have such poor language abilities.

(1)

The speaker believes that the students’ poor English results from ________.

[ ]

A.

the ineffective work of the English teachers

B.

the unawareness of language learning methods

C.

the inability of the students o learn the language

D.

the imperfection of English standards for 9-level students

(2)

In the author’s opinion,the speaker ________.

[ ]

A.

can think and speak intelligently

B.

has overstated the language problems of the students

C.

is right in saying English teachers are not doing their jobs

D.

makes a professional judgment on the students’ English level

(3)

In Paragraph 4 the author points out ________.

[ ]

A.

what leads to the complainers’ dissatisfaction

B.

what complainers’ reaction is towards young people

C.

how the complainers’ opinions form through the years

D.

how sensitive the complainers are in the young people’s eye

More than a hundred adults and kids gather for the Star Party on a cold evening, chattering excitedly as they stand in the dark on a Virginia hillside. The odd thing is, no one has turned on a flashlight, and no streetlights or house lights wink(閃爍) on around them.
These people have traveled to the countryside more than an hour from Washington, D. C., to get away from the glow of city lights.  That's because they are attending a star party. Star parties are gatherings where professional and amateur astronomers set up their telescopes and invite people to come learn about the night sky. Getting away from light pollution, or artificial skylight from buildings for example,  helps stargazers (看星星的人) see objects in the sky much better.
At this star party, Sean O'Brien of the National Air and Space Museum’s Einstein Planetarium starts off by asking the crowd to simply look up and take in all they can see. He points out plenty of things that can be seen without special equipment. Stars, satellites, and even the Andromeda galaxy(仙女座) can be found if you know where to look.
After that, several dozen astronomers offer close-up views. Each has focused their telescope on a different part of the sky. As kids take a look, the owner gives a mini-lesson.
O’Brien says you can have your own star party at home and learn a lot just by paying attention to what's happening up above. "Watch the sky as the seasons pass, and you will see that it changes," he says. "Or start with the moon. Notice when and where you are seeing it—maybe even in the early morning while you wait for the school bus. "
