For years I wanted a flower garden. I would spend hours thinking of the different things I could        that would look nice together.
But then I had five lovely children: Matthew and Marvin, the twins Alisa and Alan, and then Helen. I was too        raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight (緊的) ,as well as time. When my children were little, if they wanted something that         too much I’d have to say, “Do you see a money        outside? Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, all five got through high school and college, and started living on their own. And I started thinking again about having a        .
One spring morning, on Mother’s Day, I        the window and was surprised to see a new tree in my yard. I put my glasses on and I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. There was a money tree in my yard!
I went outside to look. It was true! There was as much as one hundred       on that tree. All I could think of was all the garden flowers I could        with that money! There was also a(an)       attached(附上): “ Love, Marvin.”
My other       had bought me tools, ornaments(裝飾物) and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden is now very      , just the way I wanted.
I’m still not sure whether money        on trees. But I know love does!

“Father, do you see Mother in your dreams?” the young girl asks. “You know sometimes I do.”
“Mother comes to see me a lot, you know. We sit and talk.” The father smiles. “How is your homework coming along?”
“Why do I have to study so hard?”
“It is what your mother would have wanted!”
She regrets speaking her mind. “I’m sorry, Father, I shouldn’t have said that.” She looks up and sees his eyes well up with tears.
“It’s okay, love,” he gets up and pours himself a drink. “I’ll just sit outside for a while. You finish up your work, okay?”
“I’m sorry, Father; Mother did love you very much. She told me all the time.”
“Homework, first, eh? Then we can chat about your mother.”
He heads off outside and sits in his usual chair, looking around the courtyard. The whole area relaxes the mind and somehow soothes the soul.
“All finished, Father. May I get a drink and sit with you? I have some questions.”
She comes with two drinks one for him and one for herself. He looks surprised. She never really liked him having a drink. Although he had cut back a lot from before he brought her here, it still seemed strange.
“Mother told me all about you. That is before she passed away. We would laugh together at your love stories.”
He listens without uttering a single sound.
“Why didn’t you come and take her away with you? She really wanted that. Did you know that?”
Her father looks at his daughter lovingly. “Circumstances were difficult back then. It was just the way things were. When it came time to…” He sighs. “To visit her it was too late.”
The girl smiles. “I hope I will have the same kind of love you and mother had.”
“Without all the heartache,” her father adds.
“She always knew you loved her. She told me every day,” the child mentions cheerfully. “I saw her crying sometimes when she read your letters.”
“Did she make you promise to look after me?” She inquires.
“She asked me to take care of you.”
“You promised her, didn’t you?”
“Yes, I did.”
“It is nice out here, isn't it? Mother would have been very happy here.”
She talks with some authority. Her father remains silent. A smile comes to his weary brow. He nods his head.
“Mother wanted me to give you something. I think now the time is right.” She runs to her room. Upon returning she hands her father a book. “It’s mother’s diary! She wanted me to give it to you.”
He takes the book and holds it in his trembling hands, “Thank you.”
“Mother said you would understand things better.”
“Wise woman, your mother.”
He places the book on the table as he gets up. The girl gets up and wraps herself around her father.
“I love you.” she looks up at his face.
He picks her up and hugs her. “I love you, too.” His voice trembles.
“It’s okay, Father. We have each other now and mother is in both of us.”
He kisses her head.
“Time you went to bed,” her father softly says.
He puts her down and she scampers off to get washed and ready for bed.
Clearing up everything he checks on his daughter. She is in bed waiting for her good night kiss. He tucks her in and bids her goodnight.
Just as he is to leave she tells him. “Mother told me she adopted me when I was a baby.”
He stands at her bedroom door. Words fail him. Yes, he knew she was adopted.
“I am really lucky for being loved by my parents, even if I am not really theirs.”
You trying to bring on the water works?” he tells her.
She giggles, “Goodnight, Father. I love you.”
“Love you, too.”
His face lights up as he wipes his dampened eyes.
The door closes and the child falls asleep dreaming of her mother.
Sitting outside he picks up the diary and opens it and reads the first line: “I love you, my dearest, if only things could have been different…”

Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know      you think you are a        person or a coward (懦夫). But you will never really know the answer to this question        you are tested in real life. Some people       they are brave but when they come face to face with real      , they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like      .
Lenny had always thought of himself as a         person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy.         , on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the         water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very           and did a very dangerous thing. He jumped into the river,          to the woman, and kept her head          the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny, it was not           .
When you are in a very        situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. The chemical is called adrenalin (腎上腺素).        adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are        to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified (or completely afraid), the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this       , the muscles become very hard and you find you       go at all. You are then paralyzed (使無能為力) with fear. This is        when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we’re “petrified”. This word comes from the Greek word “petros”, which means “stone”. We are       frightened that we become stonelike.

A man, who sometimes takes my bus, is in rags. His life seems different from that of the others. He looks exhausted and carries nothing. He appears along a downtown street, seemingly out of nowhere. We sometimes want to know where he sleeps at night.
A few weeks ago he boarded the bus. A few stops later, a young woman boarded. She swiped (刷) her bus-card, only to find the machine would not accept it. The driver told her to pay the $2.25 fare. “I just bought this card,” she said. “I paid the money...”
The driver said she could take the card back to the sales office and explain the problem. In the meantime she would have to pay the fare for that day. The woman became confused and distressed. The rest of us just watched, wondering how the problem would be solved. Suddenly the man rose from his seat, dropped a few coins into the fare box.
“You’re lucky,” the bus driver said quietly. “He paid for you.” Silence fell over the bus. The rest of us had watched the woman’s discomfort, but he felt it. We lawyers, journalists and business people headed downtown to help fix the world. He fixed her world.
I haven’t seen him since that day. Some people believe angels occasionally drop down and move among us. All I know is that I have a new respect for the simple act of kindness. It speeds us along on our way.

Jayne Fisher watched anxiously as her 17-year-old daughter Katie pulled her lamb(羊羔) into the Madison County Junior Livestock for sale.
Katie was battling cancer. This was her first chance in months to be outdoors having fun, away from hospitals and treatments, and she had come with high hopes for earning some money for her treatment. She had wavered a little on her decision to part with the lamb, but with lamb averaging two dollars a pound, Katie was looking forward to it. So the bidding(出價began.
That’s when Roger Wilson, the auctioneer(拍賣師), had a sudden inspiration that brought some unexpected results. “We sort of let everybody here know that Katie had a situation that wasn’t too pleasant,” is how he tells it. He hoped that his introduction would push the bidding up, at least a little bit.
Well, the lamb sold for $11.50 a pound, but things didn’t stop there. The buyer paid up, then decided to give the lamb back so that it could be sold again.
