As a kid, I was a little fat. In college, I was less active, and I started blowing up. It got out of control when I went to law school. At the age of 30, I weighed 414 pounds. I was always tired. I have a family history of heart disease, and I was scared. I also wanted to look better. So a few weeks after my birthday, in the spring of 2006, I started to lose weight.
Walking was all I could do at first. I started by walking to a subway stop a few blocks away instead of the one closest to my apartment. I gradually increased the distance. A year later, I started to run. At first I could run for only two minutes, but I kept on.
I made a difference. I was losing nine or ten pounds a month, and I had a lot more energy. I started to think about the New York City Marathon, which goes right past my apartment building. For years, I thought I could never do that. But now I realized that maybe I could…
By my 33rd birthday, in the spring of 2009, I was down to 180 pounds. That summer, I started formally training for the marathon. And on the morning of November 1, I stood on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island with more than 40,000 other runners, waiting for the event to start.
When we started moving, it was an amazing feeling to have people cheering me on, handing me cups of water. In Harlem, my mom and brother stood on a street corner, waving. And then I crossed the finishing line in Central Park, and somebody put a medal around my neck. I was in tears from being so happy.

The author was getting very fat when young and he tried to lose weight step by step. He tried hard and even joined in the City Marathon. At last he achieved great success.
Having read the passage, I was deeply touched and admired the author for his insistence. If he had not been so determined and persistent, he would not have lost so much weight and lived an exciting life. His story shows that if one sets his mind to something, nothing is impossible.
It reminds me of a similar experience. One day it was announced that there would be a rope-skipping competition in our class. On hearing the announcement, I felt nervous because I had never done rope skipping before. But my sister, who promised to teach me, persuaded me to have a try. At the beginning, I found it hard to learn to skip because my feet always blocked the rope. However, I didn’t lose heart but changed my way of learning. Gradually I could skip faster and faster. Thanks to my sister’s help and my perseverance. I took part in the competition confidently, in which I skipped 155 times and ranked fifth.
So my dear friends, I strongly recommend that only with insistence can your dream eventually come true! Just keep it in mind, “Roma wasn’t built in one day.”

Michael J. “Crocodile Dundee” (also called Mick), played by Paul Hogan, is the main character in the fictional Crocodile Dundee film series consisting of Crocodile Dundee, Crocodile Dundee II, and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. The character is a crocodile hunter, hence the nickname.
In the first film, Crocodile Dundee, Mick is visited by a New York reporter, Sue Charlton, who travels to Australia to investigate a report she heard of a crocodile hunter, who had his leg bitten off by a crocodile in the outback. The hunter supposedly walked more than a hundred miles back to civilization and miraculously survived his injuries. However, by the time she meets him, the story turns out to be a somewhat exaggerated legend where the “bitten-off leg” turns out to be just being some bad scarring on his leg; a “l(fā)ove bite” as Mick calls it. Still interested by the idea of “Crocodile Dundee”, Sue continues with the story. They travel together out to where the incident occurred, and follow his route through the bush to the nearest hospital. Despite his old-fashioned views, the pair eventually become close, especially after Mick saves Sue from a crocodile attack.
Feeling there is still more to the story, Sue invites Mick back to New York with her, as his first trip to a city (or “first trip anywhere,” as Dundee says). The rest of the film depicts Dundee as a “fish out of water,” showing how, despite his expert knowledge of living outdoors, he knows little of city life. Mick meets Sue’s boyfriend, Richard, but they do not get along. By the end of the film, Mick is on his way home, lovesick, when Sue realizes she loves Mick, too, and not Richard. She runs to the subway station to stop Mick from leaving and, by passing on messages through the packed-to-the-gills crowd, she tells him she won’t marry Richard, and she loves him instead. With the help of the other people in the subway, Mick and Sue have a loving reunion as the film ends.
1.Which of the following statements is true about Mick?
A. He is a crocodile hunter living in Los Angeles.
B. He is based on a real person in Australia.
C. He wrote a film series about himself.
D. He got his nickname because of his job.

Most employers say that they wish to employ the right person for the right job. A recent report by Britain’s Independent Institute of Manpower Studies, however, disagrees with this. The report states that most employers wish to avoid employing the wrong person. Rather than looking for the right person, they are looking for applicants to turn down.
The report also suggests that in Britain and in many other parts of the world the selection methods used to pick out the right person for the job certainly do not match up to those used to judge a piece of new equipment. Employers used three main selection methods: interviewing, checking resume or application forms and examining references. Most of the employers asked in this survey stated that these selection methods were used more for weeding out unsuitable applicants rather than for finding suitable ones.
Interviews were considered to be more reliable than either resume checks or references from past employers. Research, however, proves otherwise. Interviewers’ decisions are often strongly influenced by their earlier judgment of the written application. Also different employers view facts differently. One may consider applicants who have frequently changed jobs as people with broad and useful experience. Another will see such applicants as unreliable and unlikely to stay for long in the new job.
Some employers place great importance on academic qualifications whereas the link between this and success in management is not necessarily strong. Some employers use handwriting as a standard. The report states that there is little evidence to support the value of the letter for judging working ability. References, also, are sometimes unreliable as they are not very important while checks on credit and security records and applicants’ political opinions are often the opposite.
The report is more favorable towards trainability tests and those which test personality and personal and mental skills. The report concludes by suggesting that interviewing could become more reliable if the questions were arranged in a careful, organized system and focused on the needs of the employing organization.
1.According to the passage, when most employers want to hire workers, .
A. they will try to find suitable people
B. they will look for the right applicants
C. the wrong applicants are to be turned down
D. to turn down the wrong people is what they say they aim to do
2.It is implied that .
A. to evaluate a right person is more difficult than to evaluate equipment
B. employers are more successful in selecting the right equipment than the right persons
C. criteria will be set up according to the real situation of the applicants
D. resumes means application forms
3.Most of the recruiters (招聘人員) .
A. consult the applicants
B. can find suitable people
C. prefer resumes or references
D. use different ways to sort out the unsuitable applicants
4.Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Employers get different conclusions from the facts.
B. Changing jobs frequently will reduce the chance to be recruited.
C. Academic qualifications will guarantee the applicant managing ability.
D. Handwriting is a valid way to evaluate an applicant.
5.It can be inferred from the passage that successful employees will be those who .
A. have outstanding references
B. are strong in emotional quotient
C. take interviewing seriously
D. have strong political leanings

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant(發(fā)電廠) for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally , the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁鐵), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

A. Breaking up whatever is breakable.
B. Sharpening metal bars.
C. Separating light elements from the heavy ones.
D. Sorting out small pieces of metal.
3.What’s the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?
A. To deal with wastes in a better way.
B. To protect the environment from pollution.
C. To get raw materials locally.
D. To get big profits from those plants.
4.The first full-scale huge recycling plants __________.
A. began to operate fifteen years ago
B. will take less than fifteen years to build
C. will be built fifteen years later
D. will probably be in operation in fifteen years
5.The passage is mainly about __________.
A. a cheap way to get energy

TIME is an American weekly news magazine published in New York City. It was created in 1923 by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce, making it the first weekly news magazine in the US. Hadden was considered carefree, liked to tease Luce and saw TIME as important but also fun. That accounted for its heavy coverage of celebrities(including politicians), the entertainment industry, and pop culture—criticized as too light for serious news.
It tells the news through people, and for many decades, the magazine’s cover depicted a single person. On Hadden’s death in 1929, Luce became the most important man at TIME and a major figure in the history of 20th-century media.
TIME is also known for its signature red border, first introduced in 1927. It has only changed four times since then. The issue released shortly after the September 11 attacks on the United States featured a black border to symbolize mourning. However, this edition was a special “extra” edition published quickly for the breaking news of the event; the next regularly scheduled issue contained the red border. Additionally, the April 28, 2008 Earth Day issue, dedicated to environmental issues, contained a green border. The next change in border was in the September 19, 2011 issue, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a metallic silver border. The most recent change(again with a silver border) was in the December 31, 2012 issue, noting Barack Obama’s selection as Man of the Year.
TIME has a division magazine, TIME FOR KIDS(TFK), which is especially published for children and is mainly distributed in classrooms. TFK contains some national news, a “Cartoon of the Week”, and a variety of articles concerning popular culture that the younger U.S. citizens are interested in. All the stories in TFK are written by young reporters.
In some advertising campaigns, the magazine has suggested that the letters TIME stand for “The International Magazine of Events”.
1.TIME has a history of _______.
A. about 50 years B. about 70 years
C. about 90 years D. about 150 years
2.Why did some people dislike TIME in the beginning?
A. It had kept its cover the same since the 1920s.
B. It didn’t have a serious tone for important events.
C. It didn’t report important events quickly enough.
D. Henry Luce was in charge of the magazine for too long.
3.Why did TIME change its red border for the first time?
A. To remember the 10th anniversary of an attack.
B. To remind readers to protect the environment.
C. To show great sadness about the deaths.
D. To call on readers to vote for Obama.
4.What do we know about TFK?
A. It has young reporters writing articles.
B. It has a division magazine called TIME.
C. It is designed for kids and teachers.
D. It mainly contains popular culture.
