Heavier people produce more greenhouse gases, researchers say. Watching your weight does more than protect your health. It also may help fight climate change.

Researchers at the London School  of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine say that because food production is a major contribution to greenhouse gases, a lean population, such as in Vietnam, consumes about 20 percent less food and produces fewer greenhouse gases than a population in which 40 percent of people are obese, a rate close to that of the United States.

Also, less energy is required to transport slim people, say the researchers, Phil Edwards and Ian Roberts, of the school's Department of Epidemiology(流行病學) and Population Health.

They calculated that a lean population of a billion people would emit 1,000 million tons less transportation-related carbon dioxide waste a year than a fat population would give off. Their research was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

“When it comes to food consumption, moving about in a heavy body is like driving around in car that needs a lot of gas,” the researchers said. “The heavier our bodies become, the harder and more unpleasant it is to move about in them, and the more dependent we become on our cars. Staying slim is good for health and for the environment.”

“We need to be doing a lot more to change the global trend toward fatness and recognize it as a key factor in the battle to reduce emissions (釋放) and slow down climate change,” they said. However they noted that the trend is in the opposite direction. The average body mass index (BMI) (體重指數(shù)) is increasing in nearly every country. The average male BMI in England, of instance, increased from 26 to 27.3 between 1994 and 2004, while the average female BMI increased from 25.8 to 26.9.

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.

“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density(密度)”,said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope(放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”

Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanreal systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”

His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半導體). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.

“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶體結構) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”

Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon?

A. He teaches chemistry at MU.

B. He developed a chemical battery.

C. He is working on a nuclear energy source.

D. He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.

Jae Kwon gave examples in Paragraph 4_________.

A. to show chemical batteries are widely applied.

B. to introduce nuclear batteries can be safely used.

C. to describe a nuclear-powered system.

D. to introduce various energy sources.

Liquid semiconductor is used to _________.

A. get rid of the radioactive waste         B. test the power of nuclear batteries.

C. decrease the size of nuclear batteries   D. reduce the damage to lattice structure.

According to Jae Kwon, his nuclear battery _______.

A. uses a solid semiconductor            B. will soon replace the present ones.

C. could be extremely thin           D. has passed the final test.

The text is most probably a ________.

A. science news report          B. book review

C. newspaper ad            D. science fiction story

It was the end of my first day as a waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cup had gone away, and my feet hurt. The loaded plates I carried seemed to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged, I didn’t seem able to do anything right. As I made out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice-cream order a dozen times, I was ready to stop. Then the father smiled at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done,” he said, “you’ve looked after us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness disappeared. I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d like my first day, I said, “Fine!” Those few words of praise had changed everything. Praise is like sunlight to human spirit; we cannot flower and grow without it. and yet, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold criticism, but are unwilling to give out fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Perhaps that is why one word of praise can bring such pleasure.
It’s strange how chary we are about praising. Perhaps it’s because few of us know how to accept it. It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas in which effort generally goes unnoticed. An artist gets admired for a glorious picture,a cook for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your laundry(洗衣店)manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right? In fact,to give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort.
60.Which of the following can’t describe the writer’s situation before she got her tip?
A.She was tired.           B.She was busy.
C.She was sorry.             D.She was confident.
61.According to the passage, which of the following is least likely to be given praise?
A.An artist.                B.A cook.
C.A waitress.           D.A laundry manager.
62.The underlined word “chary”in Paragraph 2 means
A.cautious       B.careful         C.unwilling        D.greedy
63.What is the best title of the passage?

There are many colors in nature. But do you know if a color has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment.

First, put two objects(物體) with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the box. Third, wrap(裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.

Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weights in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest color is red, then blue, green, yellow and white.

The scientist told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell the color? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every color stands for (代表)a kind of light with a certain wavelength(波長). It reaches our brain through sense organs(感覺器官).

According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or ill. For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only an hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colors.

1.The idea of the second paragraph is to tell us ________.

A.a(chǎn) red box is heavier than a white one

B.a(chǎn) color has weight in one’s mind

C.white paper is lighter than red paper

D.you can know the weight of a color by holding it

2.Why did the scientist say colors have smell?

A.Because people can sense(感覺) the light from colors.

B.Because we can smell colors with our noses.

C.Because every color has its own sweet smell.

D.Because every color can give off light of the same length.

3.If a person walks from a blue room to a red room, his body temperature will__________.

A.rise

B.fall

C.stay the same

D.change now and then

4.It can be known from the text that________.

A.colors have order in weight

B.colors can change the weight of an object

C.people would stay longer in a room with red windows

D.colors can affect (影響)our mood (情緒)and health

5.This passage is probably a __________.

A.book review

B.history textbook

C.travel magazine

D.science report

Howard Dill is a giant among giant pumpkin(南瓜) growers. He grew world champion pumpkins for four years running, from 1979 to 1982, and missed winning the fifth year by only 5 pounds. Today, his Dill Atlantic Giant seeds are sold worldwide to more than 50 seed companies. The pumpkins grown from his Dill Atlantic Giant seeds commonly weigh in at over 1,000 pounds. “I don’t have any training in genetics(遺傳學); it was all trial and error,” Dill says. He got his love of pumpkins from his father and has enjoyed growing them for years.

Dill still grows giant pumpkins, but not for competition. In the fall, visitors come to enjoy the pumpkins on his 90-acre farm in Nova Scotia, Canada. He plants ten acres of pumpkins for Halloween and two acres of giant pumpkins. One of giant pumpkins was recently baked into 442 pumpkin pies and sold at $5 each for charity.

It you want to try growing a giant pumpkin, Dill recommends starting with a soil test and then adding fertilizer(農(nóng)藥) as needed. Plant the giant pumpkin seed. A giant pumpkin can gain 15 to 20 pounds a day, so careful watering—every day or two—is necessary. You should wait about 130 days until the pumpkin matures and then you can harvest it.

Dill’s favorite pumpkin set the Guinness Book record in 1981. It weighted 493.5 pounds. “I’ve grown them larger since, but that one meant a lot,” he remembers. “I never would have imagined ten

years ago that there would be a 1,000-pounder, but there are many of them now,” says Dill. The 2006 world record holder is Larry Checkon of Pennsylvania. He grew a 1,469 pounder. Dill says, “These world champions are grown from my seeds, so I feel like a winner right along with them.”
