Last week I was riding my special motorbike and then stopped at a convenience store. As I was getting my wheelchair off the back, a man watched me from his car and I noticed a wheelchair in his back seat. We spoke for a moment and I asked him about the wheelchair. He answered that it was for his daughter. “Well, do you think she would like to go for a ride on my motorbike with me?” I asked. He seemed shocked that a total stranger would ask him this. He thought about it for a second and said, “OK, as long as I can follow you.”

He introduced me to Amy and he sat her on my back seat. Her father followed me for a few miles and she talked non-stop about what she wanted for Christmas.

As we came back to the convenience store, she said, “This ride is the best Christmas present I could ever receive. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life and didn’t know I could do this.” I told her about some of the other things I do (ski, travel the world by myself, etc.). As her father was taking her off my bike, she turned to him and said, “Oh Daddy, I’m going to be OK. Mr. Bryant does all kinds of things, and I will too.” Her father turned away as a tear of joy rolled down his cheek. He hugged me and said, “I was sitting here praying for a gift for Amy that would encourage her. She often felt that her life was dull compared to other children. God answered my prayer just now. Now I pray that God will bless you for your gift to Amy today.” I believed what he said. Being kind and thoughtful to others, we can be an answer to prayer.

This is my world now; it’s all I have left. You see, I’m old. And, I’m not as healthy as I used to be. I’m not necessarily happy with it, but I accept it. Occasionally, a member of my family will stop in to see me. He or she will bring me some flowers or a little present, maybe a set of slippers—I’ve got eight pairs. And then they will return to the outside world and I’ll be alone again. Oh, there are other people here in the nursing home. Residents, we’re called. The majority are about my age. I’m 84. Many are in wheelchairs. The lucky ones are passing through—a broken hip, a diseased heart, something has brought them here for rehabilitation(康復(fù)). When they’re well they’ll be going home.

The help here is basically pretty good, although there’s a large turnover of staff. Just when I get comfortable with someone he or she moves on to another job. I understand that. This is not the best job to have. I don’t much like some of the physical things that happen to us. I don’t care much for a diaper(尿布). I seem to have lost the control acquired so diligently as a child. The difference is that I’m aware and embarrassed, but I can’t do anything about it. I’ve had three children, and I know it isn’t pleasant to clean another’s diaper. My husband used to wear a gas mask when he changed the kids. I wish I had one now.

Why do you think the staff insists on talking baby talk when speaking to me? I understand English. I have a degree in music and am a certified teacher. Now I hear a lot of words that end in “y”. There is little need for anyone to position their face directly in front of mine and raise their voice with those “y” words. Sometimes it takes longer for a meaning to sink in; sometimes my mind wanders when I am bored. But there’s no need to shout.

I’d love to go out for a meal or travel again. I’d love to go to my own church, sing with my own choir. I’d love to visit my friends. Most of them are gone now or else they are in different “homes” of their children’s choosing. I’d love to play a good game of bridge, but no one here seems to concentrate very well. My children put me here for my own good. They said they would be able to visit me frequently. But they have their own lives to lead. That sounds normal. I don’t want to be a burden. They know that. But I would like to see them more. One of them is here in town. He visits as much as he can.

Something else I’ve learned to accept is loss of privacy. Quite often I’ll close my door when my roommate—imagine having a roommate at my age—is in the TV room. I do appreciate some time to myself and believe that I have earned at least that courtesy(禮貌). As I sit thinking or writing, one of the aides invariably opens the door unannounced and walks in as if I’m not there. Sometimes she even opens my drawers and begins searching around. Am I invisible? Have I lost my right to respect and dignity? I am still a human being. I would like to be treated as one.

Back to my semiprivate room for a little semi-privacy or a nap(午睡). I do need my beauty rest; company may come today. What is today, again? The afternoon drags into early evening. This used to be my favorite time of the day. Things would wind down. I would kick off my shoes. Put my feet up on the coffee table. Pop open a bottle of Chablis and enjoy the fruits of my day’s labor with my husband. He’s gone. So is my health. This is my world.

1.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?

A. The staff at the nursing home mistreated the elderly people.

B. Nursing home workers sometimes stole items from her drawers.

C. Her children did not often visit because they felt guilty for having put her in the nursing home.

D. The staff used baby talk with her because they assumed her mind had aged as her body had.

2.The author concluded her essay with a tone of ________.

A. dignityB. sadnessC. disappointmentD. confusion

3.How will the author’s son most probably feel after he reads this essay?

A. Sympathetic.B. Regretful.C. Angry.D. Relieved.

4.The best title for the passage would be ________.

A. The Disadvantages of Growing Old

B. If Only I could be getting better

C. The Elderly: A Forgotten Generation

D. The Place That Changed My Life

TOKYO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has downgraded the forecast for global economic growth for 2012 to 3.3 percent before the IMF-World Bank 2012 annual meetings. The IMF called on all players to cooperate closely to improve the global economy as the global economy recovered more slowly than the IMF’s forecast in April due to many uncertainties.

“In advanced countries, growth is now too low to make a substantial dent in unemployment, and in major emerging countries, growth which had been strong earlier has also decreased.” said the IMF Chief Economist Olivier Blanchard at the press conference.

Good effects have been observed with right action taken by some central banks in the euro area, and IMF received the good signals and considered them a good opportunity to seize as many uncertainties, in every corner of the world, preventing the decision makers from investing, creating jobs and developing values. The IMF suggested if the measures continued working effectively, there is reason to believe the most difficult time for Europe will pass soon, the recovery will begin in 2013.

Looking into the future, IMF suggested there are four key policies for all members to do to make the economy keep going forward.

Firstly, continue to complete the financial sector reform contributing to the safety of the financial sector, as the safety has not improved much yet than five years ago. And then, countries should deal with the legacy(遺留) of high debt, especially in the advanced economies, which have extremely high level. Policy makers also need to expand the employment on creating the condition for economic growth, because the jobless rate among young people is unacceptable. Finally, all members of IMF should face the global unbalance, which is the topic that has been talked about for a long time.

Christine Lagarde, IMF Managing Director, said the annual meetings of IMF could provide a broad platform for players, both new ones from the emerging market and traditional ones from the advanced market, and cooperation is the thing most needed, because the global economy is a cooperative game.

“Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(品質(zhì))in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confidence American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don’t mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What’s worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.

Being confidence for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their Speeches.(The course I’m teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won’t be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program

A.he asks a student to repeat what he has said

B.the students bargain with him

C.he pretends to know what he doesn’t

D.he has to give a speech
