Are you a dog person or a cat person?

With so many photos and videos of cats and dogs doing cute things online, it’s easier than ever to answer which of these furry friends you like more. There are many reasons why people prefer one type of pet over the other. So, have you ever wondered what your preference for cats or dogs says about you?

In fact, a 2010 study done by Sam Gosling, a psychologist at the University of Texas, US, and his graduate student Carson Sandy found that dog people are more extroverted (外向的), agreeable and conscientious (認真的) than cat people.

“Cats will occasionally engage in social activities, but usually after only a few minutes they will give up the game. Dogs, on the other hand, will often engage in play, like fetching a thrown ball, for hours at a time,” said Modern Dog magazine.

Just on the basis of dogs’ nature being more sociable than cats’, you may expect that the personalities of dog people also reflect higher sociability. And Gosling’s study found that dog people are generally about 15 percent more extroverted and 13 percent more agreeable, both of which are associated with social orientation (傾向).

In addition, dog people are 11 percent more conscientious than cat people. “Conscientiousness” is a tendency to show self-discipline, to complete tasks and aim for achievement. This trait also shows a preference for planned rather than spontaneous (一時沖動的) behavior.

In comparison, cat people are about 12 percent more anxious, but they are also 11 percent more “open” than dog people, due to a general appreciation for art, emotion, imagination, curiosity, adventure, unusual ideas and variety of experience. And people high on openness are more likely to hold unconventional beliefs.

Despite so many differences, there are some things that cat people and dog people have in common. “Both types of people consider themselves close to nature, dislike animal-print clothing and generally look on the better side of life,” noted Mother Nature Network.

University — the best days of my life! I made lots of friends in my student dorm, went to great parties, joined the debating society... and, well, I did some work too — but I must admit that my lecturers were very patient with my tardiness (拖沓).

It is easy to look back at our university days in good ways but the truth is that when we first arrived on campus, most of us were out of our comfort zone. In fact, a survey of students at Imperial College London has showed that 3 out of 4 students experience high levels of stress, or a mental health condition, during their time at college. The survey, conducted by over a thousand students, also found that 70% of those that experience stress do so at least once a week, and 9% of them feel stressed constantly.

Kristy, a student at Exeter University, didn’t enjoy her first days in college. She says: “When I first got to university I don’t think I’d realized that I’d forgotten how to make friends. I’d been with the same school friends for seven years, and so I was trying to balance social success with academic success while learning how to look after myself at quite at a young age."

Dr. Ruth Caleb of the counseling service at Brunei University in London has some tips that should make life easier for students before they set off for university. She says: “Certain things that I think it would be very helpful for students to have put in place are an ability to do the practical things of life — to do the washing, to do the cleaning and so on— being able to cook. Budgeting(預算) is extremely important in university life.” And Caleb adds: “You should learn how to spend time on your own comfortably.”

I graduated and learnt how to take care of myself the hard way. I hope that new students these days remember to acquire some life skills before they make the big jump.

1.How does the writer feel about his university life?

A. Challenging but wonderful.

B. Busy and tiring.

C. Dull and stressful.

D. Boring but successful.

2.Which is true about students who first enter university?

A. Most of them suffer from frequent stress.

B. Most of them find it hard to manage their life.

C. They fail to balance social and academic life.

D. They feel as comfortable as they expect.

3.Dr. Ruth Caleb thinks budgeting is of great importance because it_________.

A. helps students put everything in place

B. helps students live independently

C. makes students' university life easier

D. does good to students’ social relationships

4.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined part in the last paragraph?

A. Become very successful.

B. Make great progress.

C. Get used to university life

D. Go to university.

Holiday gift buying can feel a little empty, when all of those endless lists, long lines at the shopping center and dollars spent lead to a 5-minute excitement of flying wrapping paper. 1. The following tips can help make gift giving more meaningful for both the giver and the receiver.

1. Know the person

The most important thing in the exchanging of gifts is that it shows that you really know the person well, and you really care about him. 2.

2. Donate in their name

3. Research suggests that happier people give more to others, and that giving more makes people happier. Moreover, charity-related happiness is highest when people give in a way that promotes social connection. So, try giving to the less fortunate in someone's name this holiday season.

3. Give handmade goods or hand-me-downs

4. A study suggests that people feel that homemade items show more love, and love is what they want to express to the gift receiver.

Family heirlooms(傳家寶) may be another good gift option. A 2009 study found that when families hand down even a very depersonalized thing — money — to the generations, the symbolic value of the cash is greater than the numerical value alone.

4. Provide chances for participation

If there's a golden rule of gifts, though, it's this: 5. People who receive experiential gifts, such as concert tickets or a zoo membership, feel more connected to the gift giver than people who received material gifts.

A. Give experiences rather than objects.

B. But it doesn't have to be that way.

C. Giving gifts to friends or to charity is linked to happiness.

D. That is always beyond their expectation.

E. That means catering to another’s pleasure.

F. Start listing every person you plan to give a holiday gift to.

G. The new and store-bought is not always best.
