An experiment was done on macaques(獼猴).They【1】(give)a chain and taught that they would be fed if they pulled【2】chain.The catch, however, was that every time they pulled the chain, another macaque would be shocked.
Even though it meant risking starvation,87% of the macaques refused【3】(pull) the chain if they knew it would hurt another macaque. In one case,a macaque went a full two weeks without eating rather than deal with the guilt of【4】(hurt) another animal.
It's pretty impressive when you compare that to another study because another group of【5】(science) did a similar experiment on a different animal-humans.They paid people to pull a lever(杠桿)【6】they said would shock another person with【7】(electric).That other person was an actor who pretended to be【8】great pain every time they pulled the lever. In the experiment,a full 87% of the people pulled the lever all the way to a space【9】(mark) "Danger!Severe Shock!"even while hearing their victim scream painfully. It was all to get a few dollars that they could have【10】(easy) earned by getting a job at McDonald's.
【1】were given
【2】the
【3】to pull
【4】hurting
【5】scientists
【6】that/which
【7】electricity
【8】in
【9】marked
【10】easily
拒絕做某事:refuse to do sth. 故填to pull。
先行詞為a lever,所以用that或which引導(dǎo)定語從句。故填that/which。
故填in。

The farmer hitched(套住) the mule to the car and (shout), “Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!” And the mule pulled the car from the ditch very little effort.
The man was (amaze). He thanked the farmer and asked, “Why did you call out all of those other names you called Warwick?” The farmer smiled and said, “Old Warwick is just about blind. Once he believes he's part of a team, he won’t min d (pull).”

UK education is all about giving you inspiration to develop your knowledge and skills, freedom to be creative, and support to help you achieve your best.
On a UK course you will benefit from excellent teaching and facilities. In order to accept students, UK education centres must meet strict quality standards set by the UK government and education bodies.
With such a good reputation for research and education, universities and colleges in the UK attract some of the world's leading academics and professionals. You will be encouraged to express your own ideas and think for yourself.
The attention to quality is reflected in the UK's excellent results:four of the top six universities in the world are in the UK.

The emphasis is on learning the language through fun and participation: instead of just listening to your teacher, your classes will involve games, problemsolving and discussions. You might also listen to songs, watch television or read magazines to practise your comprehension skills.
The UK's boarding schools also offer excellent teaching, facilities and support. At UK independent schools (most boarding schools are independent), a teacher has just 9.4 pupils on average, so teachers have more time to give you individual support. I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car and landing on my head. Now I am twenty-two. I can vaguely(模糊地) remember the brightness of sunshine and what red color is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity can do strange things to people.
It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn't been blind. I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don't mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.
Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy, but I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me — a potential to live — which I didn't see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn't been able to do that, I would have collapsed(倒塌) and become a chair rocker on the front porch(門廊) for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self-confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone. That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person; that somewhere in the sweeping, complicated pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.
It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the most elementary things. I had to learn my limitations. It was no good to try for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.
(1)From the first two paragraphs, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.The writer lost his sight in an accident when he was a little kid.
B.The writer appreciated what he had owned very much.
C.The writer thought he would love his life more if he hadn't been blind.
D.The writer thought it would be wonderful to see again
(2)The underlined word “calamity” in the first paragraph probably means __________.
A.misfortune
B.failure
C.reality
D.belief
(3)In the third paragraph, the writer said he was lucky because__________.
A.he had a potential to live
B.he made good adjustment
C.his parents and teachers helped him a lot
D.he could fight to live with his blindness
(4)In the writer's opinion, the most difficult thing for him was __________.
A.to start with elementary things
B.to have faith in himself
C.to fight with blindness
D.to make adjustments to reality
(5)What does the writer mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.He failed sometimes but he still made progress.
B.It is very common for us to fail with our limitations.
C.We should try for something out of reach.
D.We should never give up and gradually make progress.
