【長難句解析】
1.People representing 40 cultural groups will share their traditions and customs.
相當(dāng)于短語從句who represent 40 cultural groups。如果動詞和名詞構(gòu)成被動關(guān)系,就使用過去分詞的形式。
2.Here are just a few of the festival's many activities.
【翻譯】接下來就是這次節(jié)日里的很多活動。
【分析】本句是一個全部倒裝句,副詞here提前在句首,因為后面的主語是名詞,所以使用全部倒裝的形式。如Here comes the bus.公交車來了;如果主語不是名詞,是代詞,則不需要全部倒裝。如Here you are。

What is a six-letter word that immediately comes to mind when you need some information on the Internet? You probably thought of Google. But Google wasn’t always the name of the famous search engine. In fact, the original name was BackRub!
BackRub was the name two graduate students gave to the new search engine they developed in 1996. They called it BackRub because the engine used backlinks to measure the popularity of Web sites. Later, they wanted a better name — a name that suggests huge quantities of data. They thought of the word googol. (A googol is a number followed by 100 zeros.) When they checked the Internet registry of names to see if googol was already taken, one of the students misspelled the word by mistake, and that’s how Google was born.
Google is just one example of a name change in the business world. Many other companies have decided to change their names or the names of their products. Here are some more examples:
Jerry Yang and David Filo, two young computer specialists, developed a guide to Internet content in 1994. They called it “Jerry and David’s Guide to World Wide Web.” But they soon realized that this wasn’t a very catchy name, so they searched through a dictionary and found a better one: “Yahoo.”
Sometimes companies change their names because of the popularity of one of their products. In 1962, a young runner named Phil Knight started a company called Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, Knight decided to design and manufacture his own brand of shoes. He named the shoes after the Greek goddess of victory — Nike. Nike shoes became so well known that Knight changed the name of the whole company to Nike.
1.According to the text, Google .
A. has been famous since 1996 B. is a result of a spelling mistake
C. means a number followed by 100 zeros
D. is the original name of the search engine
2.Jerry and David changed the guide’s name to Yahoo because the original name .
A. had been registeredB. had been forgotten
C. was not attractiveD. was too short
3. The company Nike got its name from .
A. its foundersB. its customers
C. its popular productsD. its advanced techniques
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The name changesB. The history of Google
C. How to choose a name?D. Why are names important?

Say you're in the wine store and you want to buy something new. You have nothing to go by outside of the label. Will the label tell you anything you should know? Here's some general advice:
Vintage. This is the first thing we look for ourselves. You don't need to care whether 2001 or 2002 was a better year in the Sierra Foothills. The vast majority of wines at the store are meant to be drunk right away, so you make sure the wine isn't too old, particularly if you're buying it expecting lively, fresh fruitiness. We often see five-year-old Pinot Grigio and two-year-old Beaujolais Nouveau at stores, for example, so as soon as we see that kind of age on wines like those, we know we can skip them and move on(and possibly not shop there again).
Alcohol content. Too many wines have too much alcohol, which leaves them unbalanced. Sure, there are some classic wines with high alcohol levels, but many of today's regular table wines--Merlot, Chardonnay--have levels at 15% or above. Some of those might be terrific, but if we had nothing else to go on, we'd look for alcohol content at about 14% and below.
The more specific the better. A wine that says it's from Napa is probably a better bet than a wine that simply says it's from California. Unfortunately, this will also probably be reflected in the price, so this might not tell you much about value, If you care enough to know a few of famous vineyards for producing high-quality grapes, they might help you make an educated guess about quality.
Old vines. Theoretically, older vines produce fewer, but more flavorful grapes, but the problem is that no one has defined what an "old vine" is, so anyone can put this on the label. Just ignore it.
A phone number. You'd be surprised many small-production wines these days include a phone number on the back and an invitation to call the winerY, which is a sign of a highly personal winerY. We have called those numbers many times over the years and it's amazing how often the winemaker or winerY owner answers the phone.
1. The underlined word "Vintage" in the second paragraph probably means "________ " .
A. the place where the wine was made B. the year when the wine was made
C. the freshness of the wine D. the label of the wine
2.It's better to buy
A. five-year-old Pinot Grigio B. the wine labeled from older vines
C. the wine from famous vineyards D. two-year-old Beaujolais Nouveau
3. From the passage we Can infer that
A. the wine with high alcohol levels is definitely terrific
B. most wines at the store are intended to be drunk right away
C. older vines have lower production
D. some winemakers keep the promise all the time
4. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Geography. B. Price C. Quality. D. Grapes.

It's wonderful to go to another country, complete a volunteer project and feel that you really have a positive influence. But how can you become an international volunteer?
* Plan practically. Contact the organization a few months before leaving and find out if there are materials which are rare and hard to attain for the project. What you often consider plentiful here, such as nails or hammers, is in great need in other parts of the world.
* Do the project together, not on your own. You are a guest in the community. The most successful result is not that you build something and walk away, but that you and the community build something as a team. Share skills and build together.
* Be flexible. Not everything is going to happen as planned. Often the other country doesn't have the right tools, manpower, transportation or funds to get all the needed work done. In a word, they lack infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施).
* Contact with the people in the community. Often you will have "downtime" outside of the range of the project. Rather than retreat to the group with whom you traveled, be sure to spend time with the people of the community. Listen to the things about their lives. If you can't speak the language, smiles work wonders. And you will be surprised ― you will find a way to community.
Volunteering is a special and life-long experience for everyone involved. Be prepared that the person who may be changed most is you. It's a joyful, often careful experience which will encourage you to view yourself, your neighbors and your world quite differently.
1. When you volunteer to join in a project, you are advised to .
A. build something and walk away
B. make good preparation in advance
C. avoid involving locals in activities
D. depend on yourself to solve problems
2. According to the author, volunteer will .
A. reduce challenge in the world
B. determine the future of a volunteer
C. change a person's opinion of the world
D. benefit volunteers most in their learning
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What prepares you to become a volunteer.
B. Where volunteers are needed most in the world.
C. Why volunteering is popular with young people.
D. How volunteers develop a relationship with local people.

The Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, is the best place in Europe for discovering dinosaur bones. Dinosaur Farm Museum was established in 1993. Since then, the museum has introduced the study of old bones to many more people.
What we offer
Visitors can enjoy our displays, or watch us cleaning dinosaur bones and other fossils found on the island’s beaches.
The museum has a variety of different fossils, many of them never displayed to the public before. As more are discovered all the time, you can be sure of seeing something new each time you visit.
We have a free Fossil Identification Service, so you can bring in any fossils you have and find out what they are. In addition, we have a reasonably-priced Museum Shop, where you can buy a souvenir of your visit. You could also bring a picnic and relax in our special picnic area.
Activities
Fossil hunts are organized from the museum and run all year round. Groups of up to 25 are guided on a local beach where they can search for fossils. All these hunts are fully licensed and insured, and guides can help to identify any fossils found and point out things of interest.
Due to the popularity of these hunts, all trips must be booked by a personal visit to Dinosaur Farm Museum.
Did you know…?
The BBC programme “Live from Dinosaur Island” was filmed along the coast here, and Dinosaur Farm Museum was the base for the television crew.
