A new eight-kilometer road is under construction that links the port area with motorway system. It is expected to carry 20,000 trucks and cars a day, which greatly reduces the overcrowded traffic in the center of the city. As part of the project, two four-kilometer road tunnels are being built below the central area of the city, one for traffic to the north and the other for the traffic to the south. The two tunnels are about 20 meters below the surface and are 12 meters wide, providing for two lanes of traffic in each direction.
In the upper part of the tunnel two air-conditioning pipes remove the waste gas of trucks and cars and keep the quality of air inside the tunnel. The lighting is at the top of the tunnel, practically at its highest point. There will also be electric signs at frequent intervals. They show traffic conditions ahead and can be seen clearly by drivers. The wall is made up of four main elements, which include a waterproofing covering and, on the inside of the tunnel, a concrete lining.
Each tunnel is roughly round and the lower part of the tunnel is somewhat flat. The surface of the road lies on the base, which is made of concrete and steel. The drainage system, just below the road surface on one side, removes any extra liquid, particularly water. In the event of fire, the fire main, which is made of steel, pipes water to many fire hydrant stations at regular intervals along the length of the tunnel. The fire main is at the side of the tunnel and at the level of the road surface. Other systems in the tunnel will include emergency phones.
Each of the tunnels under construction is _____.
A. eight kilometers long and twenty meters wide
B. eight kilometers long and six meters wide
C. four kilometers long and twenty meters wide
D. four kilometers long and six meters wide
Which part of the tunnel in the diagram is used to pipe out extra water?
A. 1 B. 3 C. 5 D 6
Driving in the tunnel, one can know the traffic conditions ahead through______.
A. the lights B. the electric signs
C. the trucks and the cars D. the emergency phones
The passage is mainly about _____.
A. the construction of a road B. the design of a road

We once had a poster competition in our fifth grade art class.
“You could win prizes,’’our teacher told US as she wrote the poster information on the blackboard. She passed out sheets of construction paper while continuing,“The first prize is ten dollars. You just have to make sure that the words on the blackboard appear somewhere on your poster. ”
We studied the board critically. Some of US looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the fight or left while we conjured up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten—dollar grand prize, each and every one of US. I'm going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich.
Everyone in the class made a poster. Some of us used parts of those fancy paper napkins, while others used nothing but colored construction paper. Some of US used big designs, and some of us preferred to gather our art tidily down in one comer of our poster and let the space draw the viewer's attention to it. Some of US would wander past the good students’ desks and then return to our own projects with a growing sense of hopelessness. It was yet another grown-up trick of the soil they seemed especially fond of。making all of US believe we had a fair chance, and then always—always—rewarding the same old winners.
I believe I drew a sailboat, but I can’t say that with any certainty. I made it. I admired it. I determined it to be the very best of all of the posters I had seen, and then I turned it in.
Minutes passed.
No one came along to give me the grand prize, and then someone distracted me,and I probably never would have thought about that poster again.
I was still sitting at my desk, thinking,What poster? When the teacher gave me an envelope with a ten-dollar bill in it and everyone in the class applauded for me.
46. What was the teacher's requirement for the poster?
A. It must appear in time.
B. It must be done in class.

In 1977, a dead author of detective stories saved the life of a 19-month-old baby in a most unusual way. The author was Agatha Christie, one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world.
In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Qatar, near Saudi Arabia. Doctors were unable to find out the cause of her illness with confidence, so she was sent to Hammersmith Hospital in London. She was then only semi-conscious (半清醒狀態(tài)) and on the "Dangerously Ill" list. A team of doctors hurried to examine the baby only to discover that they, too, were confused by the very unusual symptoms (癥狀). While they were discussing the baby's case, a nurse asked to speak to them.
"Excuse me," said Nurse Marsha Maitlan, "but I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning. (鉈中毒)"
"What makes you think that?" Dr. Brown asked. "Thallium poisoning is extremely rare."
"A few days ago, I was reading a novel called A Pale Horse by Agatha Christie," Nurse Maitlan explained. "In the book, somebody uses thallium poison, and all the symptoms are described. They're exactly the same as the baby's."
"You're very thoughtful and you may be right," another doctor said. "We'll carry out some tests and find out whether it's thallium or not."
Tests showed that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium, a rare metallic substance used in making special glass. Once they knew the cause of the illness, the doctors were able to give the baby the correct treatment. She soon recovered and was sent back to Qatar. Later it was reported that the poison might have come from an insecticide (殺蟲劑) used in Qatar.
The one who first suggested the correct cause of the baby's illness was _____.
A. a doctor in Qatar B. Nurse Maitlan
C. Dr. Brown D. Agatha Christie
The baby was sent to London because _____.
A. she was born there
B. the hospitals in Qatar were full at that time
C. she was the daughter of a doctor in London
D. the Qatar doctors were not sure whether they could cure her

A. had never met this baby
B. had spent a long time studying the baby's case
C. visited the baby in the hospital at Hammersmith
D. gave Nurse Maitlan some advice on the phone
It seems likely from the passage that the baby's illness had something to do with _____.
A. a dangerous pair of glasses
B. the water in Qatar
C. a harmful substance used to kill insects
D. a dead writer
When the baby was sent to the hospital in London, her case was considered to be _____.
A. an urgent one B. quite a simple one
C. a usual one D. the result of thallium poisoning
