A new study has found evidence of aggressive behavior in children who drink four or more servings of soft drinks every day.
The mothers of 3,000 five-year-olds took part in the study. They were asked to keep a record of how many servings of soft drinks their children drank over a two-month period and keep records of how they behaved. The researchers found that 43 percent of the boys and girls drank at least one daily serving of soda.Four percent of the youngsters had four or more sodas to drink every day.
Children who drank the most soda were more than two times likely to show signs of aggression.“For the children who consumed four or more soft drinks per day,we see an association between aggressive behaviors, attention problems and withdrawn behaviors.”Shakira Suglia says. The aggressive behaviors included destroying possessions belonging to others, taking part in fights and physically attacking people.
Shakira says the researchers identified the link after they considered the factors like the child’s age and sex. They also considered ____________,such as whether the boys and girls were eating sweets or given fruit drinks on a normal day.In addition, the researchers examined parenting styles and other social conditions that might be taking place in the home.
It is not quite clear why young children who drink a lot of soda have behavior problems. However,a substance often found in soft drinks is caffeine, which helps to make people feel energetic.Doctor Suglia suggests that caffeine could be causing the children to be more aggressive.
The research is part of a larger study called the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study. It follows 5.000 poor mothers and their children in 20 American cities.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015-2016學(xué)年河北定州中學(xué)高二上第一次調(diào)研英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
My 18-month-old son, Adam, called from the front door. “Look, Mama! Doggie!” I dropped what I was doing and stuck my head out of the door. Brandy, our next-door neighbor’s 11-year-old dog, was over again. “Go away!” I shouted.
Brandy’s owner had died about a month earlier. The woman’s family had emptied the house and stuck a “For Sale” sign in the front yard, but the family had left old Brandy behind. For weeks, she’d been wandering around the neighborhood.
It wasn’t that I disliked dogs or anything like that. I just didn’t think about them very much. I never had a dog growing up and had never thought to get one.
Brandy went away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone rang. I went inside to take the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I searched the yard, front and back, then the basketball court and public pool. No trace of him. I was so nervous that I ran home and called the police, then my husband.
Police searched the neighborhood. Suddenly I heard anothersound: a dog barking. “It’s coming from the woods,” one of my neighbors said. We followed the barking to a wooded cliff(懸崖). There we found my son, and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast asleep. Brandy was beside him, leaning(斜靠著)against him to keep him away from the edge(邊緣). When I picked Adam up, Brandy sank down on her side, breathing quickly. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!
I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house. She hesitated a moment on our doorstep, no doubt remembering the time I’d driven her away.
“Come on, girl,” I said. “This is your home now. ” Brandy stepped in, and once she saw she was really welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. She’d done a great thing, and I wondered if she knew it. She’d certainly touched me in a way that no animal ever had. What a pity a dog like Brandy had been left behind!

Some Ways to Deal With Hardship and Pain in Life
Regardless of the difficulties you way face, it’s getting back up and moving forward that counts the most when you need to deal with hardship. 1.
Write or talk about how you feel
Keeping my feelings to myself used to make me feel lonely, but when I found someone who actually cared about me, it became natural to share how I felt with him and that contributed to my ability to overcome troublesome situations.2. Although talking to strangers about your issues may seem crazy, it actually isn’t.
3.
It is said that running away from your problems will never help, and though that’s partially true,it doesn’t mean that you need to make yourself go so deeply into a situation that you run out of air to breathe and lose the ability to weigh the pros and cons of your choices. That happens more than we like to admit, which is why it’s important to separate yourself from a situation long enough to think clearly without having people hanging over your shoulders.
Remind yourself that you’re not alone
Regardless of who or what you depend on,you need to remind yourself that you are not alone; you have people who do care.4. Sometimes it’s strangers who may share the same feelings as you do.Think about it—you may not know any of these readers personally but they could be in the exact same situation as you,so in fact,no one is truly alone.
Accept the results and get back up again
5. Whether the results of your choices proved to be helpful or not, it’s time for you to accept them and get back up.This time you have a new experience to add to your book of life so the next time something tries to knock you down,it won’t be easy because you will be strong and determined to push forward.Life will go on,time will never stand still, and it rests upon you to make the right decision of moving forward.
A.Separate yourself from the situation.
B.Tell yourself to accept the hardship.
C.Finally,it’s time to accept what has happened.
D.All in all, remember that life is short.
E.Not only did I speak to him about how I felt, but I decided to blog about it.
F.Here are some things I've tried just to help me believe in a brighter future and get over a tough situation.
G.Even if it’s just one person, that’s enough to give you reason to remind yourself that you will never truly be alone.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder, it interferes with the ability to recognize words, and for some readers to understand what they have read. Experts say dyslexia affects about five to ten percent of the population of the United States. Researchers have long known that people with dyslexia write or read words and lettersbackwards in the wrong order.
But a new study shows that people with dyslexia may have trouble redirecting their attention between senses, from seeing something to hearing something. The study suggests something that might help dyslexicpeople learn more quickly - play video games.
Vanessa Harrar of Britain’s University of Oxford led the study. She reported the findings in the journalCurrent Biology. The study suggests that dyslexic people may have trouble moving quickly from what theyread to what they hear.
In the study, Doctor Harrar tested 17 people with dyslexia, and 19 others without reading problems. The volunteers were asked to push a button as quickly as possible when they heard a sound, saw a light orexperienced both together. Doctor Harrar compared the speed of their reactions. She found that people withdyslexia were just as fast as the others when they saw only a picture or heard only a sound. But the Dyslexicshad a slower reaction time when they heard a sound and saw a picture at the same time, this may have an effect on how dyslexic children are taught how to read.
Doctor Harrar feels like playing video games could help dyslexic people shift from seeing to hearing more quickly. She adds that images in video games force the eyes to move and focus quickly. “Video game types of things pop out of here and there, they move your eyes around the screen quite quickly in response to things quite quickly, and the more you play a video game the faster you get that kind of thing. So, the video game is really training the attention system to move quickly,” said Harrar. When children learn the alphabet, they usually see the letter first and then hear the sound, or they see and hear the letter at the same time. The study shows that Dyslexics might learn more quickly if they hear the sound of a letter or word first before seeing it.
1.According to Doctor Harrar’s study, the dyslexic people have difficulty in______.
A. recognizing words
B. reading words backwards
C. writing letters in order
D. shifting from seeing to hearing
2.Which factor affects the way dyslexic children are taught to read?
A. They react more slowly to a single picture or sound
B. They react as fast as others to a single picture or sound
C. It takes them longer to react to sounds and pictures together
D. It is difficult for them to understand before seeing the word
3.How does the author suggest Dyslexics are taught based on the research finding?
A. by putting hearing previous to seeing
B. by training the attention on games
C. by seeing first and then hearing later
D. by moving the eyes around the screen
4.What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Video Games Might Help Dyslexics
B. Dyslexia Affects Attention between Senses
C. Video Games Can Train the Attention System
D. Dyslexics Might Learn Better through Sound
