Has your child been living at home since graduating from college? By one astonishing
estimate(估計),as many as 80% of 2009 grads,usually jobless,are back at home.
You may complain a lot if so.“ The trick is finding a balance between your new
relationship and guiding your child toward independence.”says Elina Furman, author of Boomerang Nation.“Parents have to understand they can’t hesitate(猶豫),because that will make young adults feel unable to live on their own.” So you should sit down together and set certain rules:
Whether it’s $50 and some housework or simply$300 a month, your child should
contribute to the household. But don’t run off on vacation with that money. This could be an opportunity to teach the importance of saving for retirement or life goals.Furman advises investing(投資)your kid’s rent so he Can use it for, say, his first apartment.
Too many young adults think that if they Can’t find a job inⅡ1eir chosen career, they don’t have to be working. Not true. While your child looks for that dream job,he should earn small wages in fields such as food service or child care. You shouldn’t have to monitor her job hunt, but if she isn’t getting anywhere,it’s time to
step in.Talk about career moves she may be missin9.Consider meeting with a career counselor(職業(yè)規(guī)劃顧問)to help get your child on the right course.
Set a cutoff time, because it’s easy to keep pushing off moving out.Fixing a date will encourage your child to find a job.And you’11 feel a sense of comfort knowing that your child won’t live at home forever.
“The more specific you get now, the less likely that conflict will break out later,” Furman says.

The $ 11 billion self – help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like “ I never do anything right” into positive ones like “I can succeed.” But was positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?
Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply highlight how unhappy they are.
The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your dim friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the essayists were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written.
In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students' self-esteem. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, "I am lovable."
Those with low self-esteem didn't feel better after the forced self-affirmation. In fact, their moods turned significantly darker than those of members of the control group, who weren't urged to think positive thoughts.
The paper provides support for newer forms of psychotherapy (心理治療) that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Meditation (靜思) techniques, in contrast, can teach people to put their shortcomings into a larger, more realistic perspective. Call it the power of negative thinking.
What do we learn from the first paragraph about the self-help industry?
A.It is a highly profitable industry.
B.It is based on the concept of positive thinking.
C.It was established by Norman Vincent Peale.
D.It has yielded positive results.
What is the finding of the Canadian researchers?
A.Encouraging positive thinking many do more harm than good.
B.There can be no simple therapy for psychological problems.
C.Unhappy people cannot think positively.
D.The power of positive thinking is limited.
What does the author mean by "you're just underlining his faults" in the third paragraph?
A.You are not taking his mistakes seriously enough.
B.You are pointing out the errors he has committed.
C.You are emphasizing the fact that he is not intelligent.
D.You are trying to make him feel better about his faults.
It can be inferred from the experiment of Wood, Lee and Perunovic that .
A.it is important for people to continually keep their self - esteem
B.self – affirmation can bring a positive change to one’s mood
C.forcing a person to think positive thoughts may lower their self - esteem
D.people with low self – esteem seldom write down their true feelings

When a first-time father saw his newborn son, he immediately noticed the baby's ears obviously standing out from his head. He expressed his concern to the nurse that some children might be made fun of his child. A doctor examined the baby and reassured the new dad that his son was healthy---- the ears presented only a small problem with its appearance.
But the nervous father continued. He wondered if the child might suffer psychological effects of ridicule, or if they should consider plastic surgery(整形手術(shù)). The nurse assured him that it was really no problem, and he should just wait to see if the boy grows into his ears.
The father finally felt more optimistic about his child, but now he worried about his wife's reaction to those large ears. She had been delivered by operation, and had not yet seen the child.
“She doesn't take things as easily as I do,” he said to the nurse.
By this time, the new mother was settled in the recovery room and ready to meet her new baby. The nurse went along with the dad to lend some support in case this inexperienced mother became upset about her baby's large ears.
The baby was in a blanket(毛毯) with his head covered for the short trip through the cold air-conditioned corridor. The baby was placed in his mother's arms, who eased the blanket back so that she could look at her child for the first time.
She took one look at her baby's face and looked to her husband and gasped, “Oh, Honey! Look! He has your ears!”
No problem with Mom. She married those ears...and she loves the man to whom they are attached.
The poet Kahlil Gibran said, “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” It's hard to see the ears when you're looking into the light.
