NASA-s New Horizons probe(宇宙探測(cè)器)flew by Pluto(冥王星)this morning, sending back history's first up-close looks at the vast freezing-cold world. Closest approach came at 7:49 a.m. EDT. To celebrate, NASA gave out the latest photo of Pluto. It showed a reddish world with an amazing heart-shaped feature on its surface.
After today's close encounter, all the nine solar system's traditionally recognized planets have now been visited by a spaceship-a huge project begun in 1962 when NASA's Mariner 2 probe flew past Venus, a planet in the solar system. More than l,200 scientists, NASA guests and important persons, including 200 reporters, watched the flyby live at New Horizons' mission control center.
That close encounter has been a long time coming. The$723 million New Horizons mission launched in January 2006 but began taking shape in 1989. "New Horizons is'a capstone mission'," Glen Fountain, mission project manager told Space, com. "It is the first completion of the observations of our solar system. It-s giving us a new idea about how we human beings fit into the universe."
New Horizons "faced a crazy number of challenges," Stern, a driving force behind New Horizons said, "So many people stuck with this for so long. They got knocked down; they stood up. They got knocked down again; they stood up again.”
In a coincidence, today's close approach falls on the 50th anniversary of the first flyby of Mars, another planet, which was completed by NASA-s Mariner 4 spaceship.
There are no longer nine officially recognized planets, of course. The International Astronomical Union regarded Pluto as “a dwarf planet" in 2006 in a decision that remains controversial(有爭(zhēng)議的)today.

Repeated cases of child abuse (虐待) in China have shocked the country. They also have led to more protection of children’s rights. But rights activists say the government and private groups need to do more to help children in need.
A small child protection service in Shanghai is trying to stop neglect and violence against children.
Gege is seven years old. She has been homeless for almost half her life. Her mother suffers from a mental condition. They lived on the streets in Shenzhen for more than three years. A man named Xiao Xudong learned about Gege. He told her story to the local media (媒體) earlier this year. Government officials heard the story and found help for Gege and her mother. The mother began to receive treatment for her mental problems. Gege was sent to a centre for children who had lost both parents. She was later re-united with her father.
Her story has a happy ending. But social workers are not yet celebrating.
Xiao Xudong spoke on Skype: “We have many child protection organizations, but why do we still have so many children being abused and neglected?”
Recently, Chinese newspapers and magazines reported on repeated cases of child abuse in the country. The reports shocked many people and led the government to strengthen measures to protect children’s rights.
Xie Chang’e is a lawyer. She offers legal assistance at a child protection service called Hope Home. Ms. Xie said that China has laws to protect children’s rights. But the laws are often unclear, she added, and difficult to put into effect.
However, the government is starting to recognize the problems in the child welfare system. New rules state that parents or legal guardians who sexually abuse, sell, abandon or violently hurt children will lose their legal right to care for them.
Ms. Xie supports the new regulations. She says they are a good way to help protect children. But she says police and other officials do not know about the regulations or do not always follow them. She also notes that the new regulations have the force of law, but they have not yet been written into laws.

A. show that child abuse has attracted the attention of society
B. indicate the seriousness of child abuse in China
C. prove that every abused child that receives help will have a happy ending
D. show that using the press is the best way to help abused children
2.What causes the laws to protect children’s rights to be ineffective?
A. The laws are so complicated that people don’t understand them.
B. The laws are so general that they are hard to put into effect.
C. The laws are often ignored by the government.
D. The laws are not practical.
3.According to Xie Chang’e, new regulations aimed at protecting children .
A. are more reasonable than before
B. have got the best results
C. don’t have the force of law
D. should be written into laws
4.What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the bad need to solve child abuse in China.
B. To call on people to have pity on abused children.
C. To help abused children find a happy ending.
D. To raise the government’s concerns(關(guān)注) to protect children.

Why Blue LED Lights Won the Nobel
The 2014 Nobel Prize in physics went to three scientists who gave lighting a big change by inventing blue LED lights. A big change in lighting efficiency is under way around the world.
Save and green
LEDs use less energy than other forms of lighting. A typical LED bulb(燈泡) can produce around 83 lumens per watt — a measure of how much brightness you can get from a unit of electrical power — much more efficient than other lighting facilities.
LEDs produce light by passing electric current through a semiconductor, while traditional bulbs pass current through a wire. The wasted heat energy is chiefly why traditional bulbs are so much less efficient.
LEDs also last about 30 times longer than traditional bulbs, and many LED bulb products promise up to 25,000 hours of use — more than 17 years if you used one for about four hours a day.
Lighting the world
The lighting transformation is not only in homes. LEDs are also being used for street lights, public holiday and decorative displays, commercial buildings, and other large energy users.
Car lighting is another application where LEDs are making progress. LEDs used to be used only for daytime running lights, but now many new cars have LED headlights for night-time use.
LEDs also hold promise for bringing light to the more than 1.5 billion people around the world without access to electricity, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences noted. Indeed, several proposed solutions to energy poverty include the distribution of LED lights, particularly solar-powered ones.
Digital displays
Without blue LEDs, the world wouldn’t have back-lit smart phones, TV and computer LCD screens, blu-ray(藍(lán)光) players, many forms of lighting, and countless other products.
In the electronics industry, LEDs provide back lighting for LCD screens in many smart phones, laptops, and televisions. The LEDs are more energy efficient and allow for very thin displays.
Blu-ray players use blue LED lasers(激光) to read data off a digital optical disc. When these systems switched from using an infrared(紅外線) laser to a blue LED laser, it became possible to store five to 10 times as much data.
LEDs are now being explored for their potential uses to transmit(傳送) data from the Internet across open space, similar to WiFi. Such a system could transmit a lot more data than WiFi alone. This high bandwidth is possible because LEDs can turn on and off millions of times per second.
The rise of LED lighting came at a time when people were just starting to be concerned about global warming. Because of LEDs’ energy efficiency, using them for the world’s lighting would affect environmental protection in a positive way.

Do you want to sleep soundly each night and wake up energized the next day? Here’s a peek at some smart, surprising habits of great sleepers.
Exercise early.
Morning fitness class or gym time before work?Go ahead, give it a try.1.While experts aren’t exactly sure why,it could have something to do with morning exercise’s ability to help regulate the secretion(分泌物) of certain hormones involved in blood pressure management, which may lead to better sleep.
Eat light at night.
Desiring a midnight snack? If your stomach starts rumbling(發(fā)出咕嚕聲) before bed, try reaching for good-for-you foods that actually promote sleep, like walnuts, tart cherries, or Greek yogurt instead. 2.Eating too much of anything within a few hours of going to bed could suppress(抑制) your body’s ability to produce sleep-promoting melatonin.
Power down at night.
Smart phones, tablets, and laptops let you do everything from shopping to watching movies to working in bed. What they don’t let you do?Fall asleep. 3.In addition to reducing your blue light exposure, you’ll probably feel less stressed, which in itself can help you sleep better.
Keep their rooms chilly.
4.But being too warm can make it harder to have quality sleep, say experts at the National Sleep Foundation. Instead, they recommend keeping your bedroom at around 20℃,which research suggests is the most suitable temperature for great sleep.
5..
Consistency is key to healthy sleep.Though it’s tempting to stay up late, then get up early for work and sleep in on the weekend, doing so can cause damage to your body’s internal clock.Over time, that can make it harder to fall asleep, not to mention making it more unpleasant to wake up in the morning.
A.The idea of a comfortable bedroom and piles of soft, fuzzy blankets is very appealing.
B.Find ways to cope with stress.
C.Go to bed at the same time every night.
D.Still, try not to go overboard even with healthy stuff.
