It was a Saturday morning,a day I believed would end in victory. For weeks,I had been preparing for the match at the county fairgrounds, sponsored(贊助)by our local riding club.My horse,Tonka, and I could run faster than any kid in the county, and I hoped to bring home a blue ribbon.

My mother usually drove me to the riding events, but on this day, my father planned to drop us off at the fairgrounds with the horse trailer(馬車) .

Although we never discussed it, my father’s struggle with alcoholism had become the silent center of our family life.My mother was paralyzed with fear and indecision. Her salary as a part-time nurse couldn’t possibly support four children. No one talked about alcoholism in those days, and it was my family secret.

We climbed on the trailer and my father pulled out of our driveway and headed toward the fairgrounds, picking up speed once we hit the main road.It wasn’t until we felt a big bump that I realized the trailer was out of control. The dream of my riding winner disappeared.Tonka lay on the floor, completely still. No words were possible.I knew he was dead.

Suddenly a man appeared.“Are you all right?” he asked.“Yes.”I answered, although I knew that nothing was all right.“Sit here on the grass,”he said.He bent down to look into the trailer.Tonka remained still. He touched Tonka and then turned to face me.“He is going to be OK.He has just been knocked unconscious.” He rubbed Tonka’s cheeks and gently pulling his ears.Tonka rose to his feet.

Our father was talking to a police officer. He was upset and in pain and took little notice of me.I looked back;the man was gone.

I never forgot him.He gave me strength and a sense of hope in a dark and frightening moment.

How to Be Successful in School
【小題1】
One really important shortcut (捷徑) to success in life is to be successful in school. Examine the relationship between levels of educational achievement and income earned during one’s working life. Education is the best investment (投資) a person can make. The higher one’s level of education, the more income they will be likely to earn and the better life will probably be. Students should make the effort to get the most education they can, and work hard to be successful in school at every level.
【小題2】
Long term means five years or more in the future. Do you want to graduate from college? Get into medical school? Get a law degree? Get an MBA? Get a master’s or PhD? Try to define concrete but realistic long-term goals for yourself. Then focus on them, thinking about them every time you attempt not to do your homework. Make your long-term goals motivations for your behavior every day, because every day does count when it comes to being successful in school. It is also important to have short-term goals that are stepping stones to your long-term goals.
【小題3】
For each of your education goals, develop a strategy and an action plan. A strategy might be to get math tutoring or to study with a group of friends on a regular basis. An action plan will include several individual tasks with timing and any cost that might be required. If you are a student, start now to understand how to generate goals, strategies and action plans that work; this skill can help you to be successful in school and later, in life.
【小題4】
Habits are formed by practice, by doing. Good study habits are formed by studying on a regular basis for the amount of time required to learn something. One of the most essential keys to being successful in school is to develop good study habits. Once good study habits are formed, you will find that learning and success in school become easier.
【小題5】
If you are a teenager or young adult, don’t let your hormones(荷爾蒙) or other people lead you into irresponsible actions. Self-indulgent (自我放縱的) behavior and abusive behavior toward others are self-destructive and unworthy of mature individuals. Work hard to develop strong character by making the virtues of courage, temperance (節(jié)制), and justice.

Disappointing as I felt at the shabby campus and the poorly-equipped classroom, we found the teachers patient and considerate. Besides, I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere on class. “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” That’s an old proverb(諺語) that is being quoted more and more often these days. And I’m pleased about that.

Today, more and more schools are reaching out to involve parents, community members and businesses to help shape a child’s future.

Parents need to be involved in their children’s education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a child’s sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child’s education. And don’t forget to communicate with teachers---they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together. It’s important to stay in touch with your child’s education all through his or her school career.

Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. Help with homework, read to a child, coach a children’s team, or provide emotional support. Help solve problems and build self-esteem. Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.

Businesses can also help shape our children’s future. Invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how to use a computer; how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, teacher, nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands.

What is a dream?

For centuries, people have wondered about the strange places that they seem to visit in their sleep. 1. However, they have been valued as necessary to a person's health and happiness.

Historically people thought dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams scientifically believing that they tell about a person's character. 2. He believed that dreams allow a person to express fantasies or fears, which would be socially unacceptable in real life.

The second theory to become popular was Carl Jung's compensation theory. Jung, a former student of Freud, said that the purpose of a dream is not to hide something, but rather to communicate it to the dreamer. 3. Thus, people who think too highly of themselves may dream about falling; those who think too little of themselves dream of being heroes.

Using more recent research, William Domhoff from the University of California found that dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop in humans. 4. Until they reach age five, they cannot express very well what their dreams are about. Once people become adults, there is little or no change in their dreams. The dreams of men and women differ. For instance, the characters that appear in the dreams of men are often other men, and often involve physical aggression.

The meaning of dreams continues to be difficult to understand. 5. If you dream that a loved one is going to die, do not panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that your loved one is going to die.

A. It gives scientists chances to better understand human mind.

B. However, people should not take their dreams as reality.

C. Children do not dream as much as adults.

D. Dreams make up for what is lacking in waking life.

E. First, there was Sigmund Freud’s theory.

F. They think their mind is trying to tell them something.

G. They have been considered as meaningless nighttime journeys.

At 18, many American young people go off on their own. They go away to college or find full-time jobs, and they often rent their own apartments. Some get married and start families. This independence(獨(dú)立性) is learned from childhood.

From an early age, American children learn responsibility(責(zé)任感). Children as young as 2 begin to put away their toys and dress themselves. At 3, many children do simple chores like setting the table.

Using money wisely is also taught early. As soon as a child understands the value of money, he or she receives a weekly allowance. This is used for things the child wants, like toys or treats. The child can spend or save it, usually with little guidance(指導(dǎo)) from parents. If the child wants money besides his or her allowance, it must be made by doing extra chores.

Children are taught early in life to think for themselves. They are allowed to make some decisions—and make mistakes. Failure(失。﹐ften teaches more than success.
