There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, he student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or land mar along the way. The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have, and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take rise, to face the unknown ,and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.

These feelings of insecurity and self doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

In the author’s eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______.

A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder  B. grow up from his own achievements

C. face difficulties and take up challenges   D. aim high and reach his goal each time

Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?

A. Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.

B. Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.

C. Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.

D. Father’s salary rose from 5000 to 7000.

For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT ______.

A. being curious about more changes   B. having an open mind to new experiences

C. being quick in self-adaptation      D. staying away from failures and challenges

The best title for this passage should be ______.

A. Facing New Challenges        B. Growth—Product or Process

C. Two Basic Ways of Growth     D. Overcoming Internal Fears

Dear Michelle:
Why can't my daughter manage her life better? She is 17 and an honor student, but she seems to be wasting her life away with a boyfriend who is holding her back.
He consumes every waking, minute of her precious time and smooth-talks her as well.
His goal is to get her to agree to go to the college of his choice, not her choice, and because his grades are lower, his choice will be limited.
I feel like I want to rescue her, but she pushes me away and shuts me out. She has only brought us pride and joy; and now this! Help!
A worried mother
Dear Mother of a 17-year-old Girl:
Hmmmmm. What's the matter with kids today? Remember that song from "Bye Bye
Birdie"?
Well if you do not, let me fill you in about teenagers and their life-management skills.Do not expect too much too soon because at the ripe age of 17, life-management is not within their reach, not should it be.
Life experience creates both the conditions and the skills for management, and if management went before experiene, there would be tittle of it.
Your daughter is an honor student for good reasons. She is smart, studies with
intelligence and you have given her good Values.
When the time comes for her to apply for college, and she visit the ones that were specifically desigened for student the top of their grade, she will most likely break away from her boyfriend's influenee.
It is rare for an honor student to change the path of their academic career for puppy love. That being said, them might be some adoldscent wisdom in her behavior after all.
Perhaps she is choosing to worry you, her parents, for unconscious reasons. Being such a good girl and being a steady source of joy might have become a bit too much for her.
Let your daughter have her own private moment of 11th grade rebellion. She deserves a break from perfection.
Michelle

In a few years, you might be able to speak Chinese,Korean,Japanese,F(xiàn)rench, and English-and all at the same time. This sounds incredible, but Alex Waibel,a computer science professor at US's Car-negie Mellon University (CMU) and Germany's University of Karlsruhe, announced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier for people who speak different languages to understand each other.
One application, called Lecture Translation, can easily translate a speech from one language into an-other. Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary. Us-ers also have to be trained how to use the programme.
Another machine can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what languagethey speak. “It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you,”Waibel said
Prefer to read? So- called Translation Glasses transcribe(轉(zhuǎn)錄) the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal display(LCD) screen.
Then there's the Muscle Translator. Electrodes capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted in a person's face, according to research-ers.
During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campus,a Chinese student named Sang Jun had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks, neck and throat. Then he mouthed-without speaking aloud- a few words in Mandarin(普通話) to the audience. A few seconds later, the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish: “Let me introduce our new prototype.”
This particular instrument, when fully developed, might allow anyone to speak in any number of lan-guages or,as Waibel put it,“to switch your mouth to a foreign language”. “The idea behind the universi-ty's prototypes is to create'good enough' bridges for cross- cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world,”Waibel said.
With spontaneous(自發(fā)的) translators, foreign drivers in Germany  could listen to traffic warnings on the radio; tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people;leaders of different coun-tries could have secret talks without any interpreters there.
【小題1】What can't be learned from the text?

A.The spontaneous translators will help us a lot.
B.There is no Muscle Translator in the world now.
C.Muscle Translators can translate what you think into speech if you just move your mouth.

【小題2】What does the underlined word mean?
A.happening at at the same time.B.happening by itself.

A.To make cultural exchanges between different countries easier.
B.To help students learn foreign languages more easily.
C.To make people live in foreign countries more comfortably.
D.To help people learn more foreign languages in the future.
【小題4】What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph?
A.The translator is so good that it can translate any language into the very language you need.
