As civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic
essentials of life-food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using
technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the
other hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order
to earn a given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that
necessary for comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours.
I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be
working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also
expect to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows
that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the
housewives will wish to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as
scrubbing the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or
sweeping, or making beds.
By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be
trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen
or more standard operations, when switched by the housewife.

1. As civilization develops in the direction of technology,________.
A. the basic essentials of life must be supplied
B. it is important to supply the basic essentials of life
C. it is no longer so important as it was in the past to supply all the basic essentials of life
D. it is not necessary to supply the basic essentials of life

2. According to the author, we are faced with________.
A. the choice of providing and fulfilling our needs
B. the choice of using technology
C. the choice of earning a standard of living
D. a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs to reduce the number of working hours

3. What alternative will mankind have chosen in future?
A. To leave our standard of living at this level and work shorter hours.
B. To raise our standard of living.
C. To fulfill needs which have been regarded as unnecessary.
D. To lower our standard of living and work shorter hours.

4. Now most housewives wish to________.
A. stop doing their housework
B. do more housework to improve their life
C. get rid of the heavy burden of their housework
D. do only simple and light housework

5. It can be inferred that robots will be invented ____.
A. to take the place of housewives

C. to do the routine of housework instead of human
D. to provide the daily necessities for man

Americans usually consider themselves a friendly people. Their friendships, however, tend to be
shorter and more casual than friendships among people from other cultures. It is not uncommon for
Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime, and consider other "friends" to be just
social acquaintances.
This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans do
not like to be dependent on other people. They tend to " compartmentalize" friendships, having "friends
at work", " friends on the softball team", "family friends", etc.
Because the United States is a highly active society, full of movement and change, people always
seem to be on the go. In this highly changed atmosphere, Americans can sometimes seem brusque or
impatient. They want to get to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something else.
Sometimes, early on, they will ask you questions that you may feel are very personal. No insult in
intended; the questions usually grow out of their genuine interest or curiosity, and their impatience to
get to the heart of the matter. And the same goes for you. If you do not understand certain American
behavior or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask all about their country or
anything "American" in which you may be interested. So much so in fact that you may become tried
of listening. It doesn't matter, because Americans tend to be uncomfortable with silence during a
conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores, for example, than
deal with silence.
On the other hand, don't expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or
world affairs, unless those subjects directly involve the United States. Because the United states is not
surrounded by many other nations, some Americans tend to ignore the rest of the world.

Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to
change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions
based on misconceptions-mistaken ideas.
One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one's own culture's way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It's ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To
avoid ethnocentrism, it's necessary to study the different elements(組成部分) of culture: language, values
and attitudes,and customs and manners.
     Language
A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways.First, people can communicate directly.Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who
speaks their language.Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not
said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.
     Values and Attitudes
Values are people's basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad.An
attitude is a way of thinking or acting.Values and attitudes influence international business. For example,
many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from
other countries, and they buy a lot of it.
     Customs and Manners
Customs are common social practices.Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite.
For example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad(色拉) before the main course at dinner,
not after. It's not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table.Failure to understand the customs and
manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products.Orange juice as a breakfast drink of
an American company in France doesn't sell well because the French don't usually drink juice with
breakfast.
1. A knowledge of the local language allows international business people ________.
A. to be more open with their customers
B. to communicate without outside help
C. to express their thoughts indirectly
D. to have a better idea of their own culture
2. The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of ________.

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother's Day? Cards, flowers, sales,
TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it ---- those are what probably come to
mind for many people when they think of Mother's Day. But there's more to the story.
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations
honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called Mothering
Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake
was even served with the family meal.
In the US, Mother's Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous
song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn't really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis stared a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers
could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil
War. The US isn't alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark,
Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries
honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother's Day and celebrating Mother's Day are important, but probably not as
important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you.
And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The reason why people celebrate Mother's Day.
B. The ways people honor mothers.
C. The history of Mother's Day.
D. The great contribution of mothers.

2. Where was the earliest Mother's Day celebrated?

A. In ancient Greece.
B. In the US.
C. In England.
D. In Italy.

3. We can learn from the passage that _____.

A. Rhea is the mother of a king in ancient Greece
B. not all the countries celebrate Mother's Day in May
C. only mothers were given a day off on Mothering Sunday
D. it was in 1872 that Mother's Day really came into being

4. The last paragraph tells us that _____.

A. all the people should celebrate Mother's Day
B. only mothers are honored on Mother's Day
C. understanding mothers' work is more important than just celebrating Mother's Day
D. people should celebrate Mother's Day every day

From the beginning of human history, wild animals provided food, clothing and sometimes medicine
for man. We may not depend as much on wild animals now. But we hear about them every day.
Americans use the names of animals in many ways. Automobile manufacturers and gasoline companies
especially like to use big cats to sell their products. They like lions, tigers and wildcats. When Americans
say wildcat, they usually mean a_lynx, an_ocelot_or_a_bobcat. All these cats attack quickly and fiercely.
So wildcats represent something fast and fierce.
An early American use of the word wildcat was quite different. It was used to describe members of
Congress who declared war on Britain in 1812. A magazine of that year said the wildcat congressmen
went home. It said they were unable to face the responsibility of having involved their country in an
unnecessary war.
Wildcat also has been used as a name for money in the 1800s. At that time, some states permitted
banks to make their own money. One bank in the state of Michigan offered paper money with a picture
of a wildcat on it. Some banks, however, did not have enough gold to support all the paper money they
offered. So the money had little or no value. It was called a wildcat bill or a wildcat banknote. The
banks who offered this money were called wildcat banks. A newspaper of the time said those were the
days of wildcat money. It said a man might be rich in the morning and poor by night.
Wildcat then was also used for an oil well or gold mine that had almost no oil or gold in it. Dishonest
developers would buy such property. Then they would sell it and leave town with the money. The
buyers were left with worthless holes in the ground.Today, wildcat oil wells are in areas that are not
known to have oil.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Wildcats and their stories.
B. Wildcats and their characters.

A. Wildcat congressmen.
B. Wildcat oil wells.

A. people couldn't buy anything with the money
B. people didn't know how to save money
C. the rich invested too much on oil wells
D. people complained and suffered a lot

The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched(草蓋的)roof cottages around a church; a drive
through a narrow village street lined with thatched cottages painted pink or white; the sight over the
rolling hills of a pretty collection of thatched farm buildings __these are still common sights in parts of
England. Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an essential part of the attraction of the English
countryside.
Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts practiced in the British Isles. Although thatch
has always been used for cottage and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and churches, too.
Thatching is a solitary(獨(dú)自的)craft, which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is
practiced has today changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are
employed in England and Wales today, maintaining and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching
newer houses. Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but because they know
it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.
In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do
it in different ways. People in developing countries are often unwilling to go back to traditional materials
and would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import the
necessary materials. Their temporary mud huts with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six
months. Thatch which has been done the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years, and is an effective
defence against the heat.

The meaning of the word "volunteer" may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means
"one who offers his or her services." There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such
as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage (垃圾) from
beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often
people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don't expect any
kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help
other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of
what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa's homes in
Calcutta. The following is her story.
"I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video (錄像) about her work in India
and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being
that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to
Calcutta for a few weeks."
"I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch.
I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer the up. I felt it was better to
share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don't think I was helping very much.
It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture
(文化) that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world."
1. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who _____.
A. is willing to help those in need without pay
B. can afford to travel to different places
C. has a strong wish to be successful
D. has made a big fortune in life
2. Tracy started her work as a volunteer _____.
A. after she met Mother Teresa
B. after she finished high school
C. when she was touring Calcutta
D. when she was working in a hospital
3. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?
A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
B. She had already had some experience.
C. She was asked by Mother Teresa's example.
D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa's example.
4. What is Tracy's "new idea" (Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?
A. Going abroad to help the sick.
B. Working in Mother Teresa's home.
C. Doing simple things to help the poor.
D. Improving oneself through helping others.
