Mars(火星)appears to be flowing with small streams of salty water,at least in the summer, scientists reported Monday."It suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars," NASA's science mission chief,John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference on September 28,2015.

The streams are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long, scientists said."What we're dealing with is wet soil.Thin layers of wet soil, not standing water," said Aifred McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tueson, the principal scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high-resolution imaging experiment.

Because liquid water is extremely necessary to life, the findings could have major possible effects for the possibility of Martian life. The researchers said further exploration is needed to determine whether microscopic life exists on the planet.

The presence of liquid water could also make life easier for astronauts visiting or living on Mars.Water could be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket fuel.NASA's goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.

The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks(條痕)on the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year.

Mars is extremely cold even in summer, and the streaks are in places where the temperature is as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But salt can lower the freezing point of water and melt ice.

The source of the water is a mystery(神秘的事物).Scientists noted it could be melting ice.It could be an underground aquifer(砂石含水層),which is rock or sand that can hold water. It is possibly water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere,or it may be a combination Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars exploration program, said the only definitive way for now to determine whether there's life on Mars is to collect rocks and soil for analysis on Earth-something a U.S.lander set for lift-off in 2020 will do.

1.What matters to the existence of liquid water on Mars?

A. The distance from the sun. B. The favorable climate.

C. The gravity of the earth. D. The salt in it.

2.According to John Grunsfeld,on Mars there seems to be .

A. salty water B. standing water

C. rocket fuel D. human beings

3.Scientists are uncertain about the of the water on Mars.

A. state B. source

C. temperature D. taste

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A. Streams of Water Spotted on Mars

B. Astronauts Will Land on Mars

C. NASA's Mars Exploration Program

D. A Breakthrough in the Exploration of Mars

Long nights of winter can leave even the most positive people feeling cranky(古怪的).But for about 5% of Americans, it’s more serious: seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that most occurs in the winter. Symptoms include loss of energy, eating more and difficulty in concentrating.

The cause of SAD is unknown, but darker days probably play a role. Reduced levels of natural sunlight can disrupt your body’s internal clock, which can lead to depression. It also causes a drop in serotonin (血清素),a feel-good brain chemical. Severe cases may need antidepressant treatment. You can’t prevent the disorder from developing, but you can ease the symptoms.

Consider light therapy

Exposure to bright light that mimics(模仿)natural light is thought to affect mood-related brain chemicals and ease symptoms. It involves sitting in front of a special light box or wearing a cap-like lighted visor (盔甲),for about 30 minutes a day. Another therapy uses a “dawn simulator” that is turned on early in the morning and gradually increases in brightness, allowing your body to wake up naturally. Light therapy can have minor side effects, such as eye strain and headaches, and it isn’t recommended for people with skin sensitivity.

Go outside

Yes, even if it’s cold and cloudy. Natural light is still good for you, and it can relieve your symptoms, especially if you head outdoors within two hours of waking up. At home, open the blinds and drapes to let in the light.

Eat right and exercise

Two health basics can help here, too. A well-balanced diet can improve energy levels, and regular physical activity works to boost your mood and ease stress and anxiety which can aggravate SAD symptoms.

Spend time with friends

Make an effort to see people you enjoy, even when you’re down. Staying connected to your social circle and participating in your regular activities can offer great support during the winter months.

1.Which of the following about SAD is NOT true?

A. It most occurs in the winter.

B. It may result in the absence of concentration.

C. It results from too much exposure to the sun.

D. Causes remain to be discovered.

2.Light therapy .

A. is of no use unless being exposed to the sun for about 30 minutes a day

B. is a good way to anyone

C. can prevent seasonal affective disorder from developing

D. doesn’t suit those with skin sensitivity

3.What does the underlined word “aggravate” mean in the passage?

A. To make something worse. B. To get rid of something.

C. To make anything better. D. To get anything changed.

4.Which column could the passage come from?

A. Education. B. Finance.

C. Travel. D. Science.
