【題目】That woman carried a new blanket over her arm. Wordlessly, she gave it to me.
“Is it finished?” I asked.
She shook her head. “No. It is ready,” she replied. I handed her the money and took the blanket.
“It is beautiful, so skillfully woven,” I said to my mother. “But what did she mean when she said it was not finished? How can it be ready if it is not finished?”
“I will tell you later,” my mother said, “but first I will take you to the Navajo village.”
We went down to the village. A group of young men were making sand pictures. We walked through the whole village, watching the different things the people were doing.
It was not until that evening that my mother finally explained the Navajo woman’s words.
“Did you notice anything about the things the people were making?” My mother asked.
“What should I have noticed?” I looked at her and asked.
“Each thing the Navajo make has one small part that is not complete. The design in their sand pictures are often not perfectly done, for example---the line of a circle may not quite close. If you look carefully at your blanket, you will probably find a stitch(一針) missing.”
I took the blanket off, but it looked as perfect as any design could be. Then suddenly, I noticed that sure enough a stitch was missing!
“They believe that when anything is completed or finished, it means the end has come--- it will not be perfect until then. Then too, with a circle, they believe that they must leave a pathway for the bad spirits to run away and the good spirits to come in. So, often, they do not make the line close.

Carrots are easy to raise and easy to harvest. They taste good. 【1】
When people think of carrots, they usually picture in their mind a vegetable that is long, thin and orange. 【2】 And not all carrots are orange. For example, Paris Market carrots are about five centimeters around. Rome carrots are thin and about twenty-five centimeters long. And Belgian White carrots are, as their name suggests, white.
For the best results, carrots should be grown in sandy soil that does not hold water for a long time. The soil also should have no rocks. To prepare your garden for carrots, dig up the soil, loosen it and turn it over. Then, mix in some plant material or animal fertilizer (肥料).
【3】 Experts say warm days, cool nights and a medium soil temperature are the best conditions for growing carrots that taste great.
Carrots need time to develop their full sugar content. This gives them their sweetness if you wait too long to pull them from the ground. 【4】 Usually, the brighter the color, the better the taste.
【5】 If the winter is not cold enough to freeze the ground, you can grow and harvest carrots the same way as during the summer months. If the ground does freeze, simply cover your carrot garden with a thick layer of leaves or straw. This will prevent the ground from freezing.
A. But carrots come in many different sizes and shapes.
B. They are economic crops.
C. The best time for planting carrotsspan> is during the winter months.
D. Weather, soil conditions and age will affect the way carrots taste.
E. The best way to judge if a carrot sis ready to be harvested is by its color.
F. And they contain a lot of carotene (胡蘿卜素), which the body make into vitamin A.
G. Many people do not know that carrots can be grown during the winter months.

【題目】I am a sophomore (大二學生) at Princeton University, where I am majoring in chemical engineering. I chose to study at UCD in the spring of 2015 primarily because I have always been interested in Ireland and Irish culture, but also to take advantage of UCD’s courses in pharmacology (藥理學), a field not offered at my home school. I also chose UCD because of its Introduction to Scientific Research module, which matches visiting students with professors for a term-long research project, and because of the Science office’s friendliness and helpfulness. I am convinced that I made the best possible decision!
While at UCD I lived on campus, which allowed me to throw myself into everything the university has to offer. I was given the opportunity to work with Geraldine Butler’s lab. I loved it so much that I ended up heading to the lab almost every weekday, whenever I wasn’t attending my always-interesting classes in pharmacology. After lab, I enjoyed a variety of after-school activities—that was certainly a new experience for me.
Living in Dublin provided a great opportunity for seeing the rest of Ireland and Europe. I spent my weekends and spring break traveling to every corner of the island, amazed at all of the history and natural beauty. I was also able to visit the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. After every trip, it was nice to return to friendly Dublin and head out with my roommates to one of our favorite pubs.
I would highly recommend studying abroad at UCD. I learned so much from my courses and my research project and had a wonderful time exploring Ireland. I can’t wait to come back!
【1】 Where is the author when he is writing the passage?
A. At Princeton University. B. At UCD.

【3】 What does the author feel at the moment?
A. Excited. B. Upset.

With the summer holiday just around the corner, it seems like everybody is busy planning their vacations. Here are some tips that can help you enjoy your holiday without emptying your pocket:
Travel off-season
Go to your desired destination while the demand is low and take advantage of huge discounts. During the peak season, the hotel and flight prices increase quickly, and you’ll likely spend more of your vacation time standing in line due to the rush of tourists. 【1】
【2】_________
Websites can help you find discount hotel rooms. Look for places that do not charge extra for children if they use the existing bedding. Stay with the locals. If you and your family are going to stay for a longer period, renting a small apartment is a good choice.
Eat like a local
Why eat at big chain restaurants when you can experience something new? 【3】 During your family trip, try new food where the locals eat. This will not just save money, but also provide you with a new and different experience. For smaller meals and snacks, avoid restaurants and try street food or other takeout.
Don’t hesitate to bargain
Tourist-heavy places are known for overcharging for just about everything. Clothes, travel goodies, souvenirs, etc. are very expensive at these places. 【4】 Bargain hard to get the best price.
Choose local transportation
【5】 Instead, take buses, railways or subways, which are always cheaper. If you are planning to stay for a while, you can consider renting a car. Hiring a car is much easier than carrying your bags everywhere if you are moving around a lot.
A. Save on hotels.
B. Surf the Internet while traveling.
C. Therefore, avoid buying anything there.
D. So it’s best to find out when the off-season starts.
E. For this reason, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask for bargains.
F. Planning your meals is another way to reduce your travel costs.
G. As a tourist, avoid taking taxis whenever possible, since they are expensive.

【題目】Archaeologists(考古學家) studying Stonehenge and its surrounding area say they've dug up the relics of an untouched, ancient campsite that dates back to 6,000 years—a find that could rewrite British prehistory.
“This is the most important discovery at Stonehenge in over 60 years,” Professor Tim Darvill, a Bournemouth University archaeologist and a Stonehenge expert who did not take part in the new discovery, told the Telegraph. And as he told The Huffington Post in an email, the discovery changes earlier theories that Stonehenge was built in a landscape that was not heavily used before about 3000 B.C.
The discovery was made during a dig at Blick Mead, a site about 1.5 miles from Stonehenge. Researchers found charcoal(木炭)dating back to 4,000 B.C. and evidence of possible buildings, according to a statement released by the university. They also dug up burnt stone and tools, as well as the remains of animals—ancient cattle that served as food for ancient hunter-gatherers.
The researchers plan further analysis on the artificial objects but say they're worried the tunnel construction (隧道建設) could damage the site and get in the way of their work.
“Blick Mead could explain what archaeologists have been searching for centuries—an answer to the story of Stonehenge’s past,” David Jacques, the University of Buckingham archaeologist who discovered the campsite, told The Guardian. “But our only chance to find out about the earliest part of Britain’s history could be ruined if the tunnel goes ahead.”
Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument made up of a ring of standing stones, lies eight miles north of Salisbury, England in Wiltshire. It has been listed as a World Heritage Site since 1986.
【1】The main purpose of the passage is _________.
A. to introduce a recent discovery of ancient relics
B. to call on people to protect the ancient relics
C. to warn the researchers not to do further analysis
D. to attract more tourists to visit Stonehenge
【2】We can learn from the passage that _______.
A. the researchers express their concern that the relics might be ruined
B. the ancient campsite has been destroyed by the construction workers
C. archaeologists are repairing artificial objects founded in the relic site
D. the tunnel construction rewrites the earliest part of Britain’s history
【3】In which section of a newspaper can we read this passage?
A. Travel. B. Business. C. Lifestyle. D. Culture.
