Without any hesitation, he said, “I’d be better off dead.” Hearing those words come out of my best friend’s mouth tore my heart apart. He has repeated that phrase more than once, and my mind continually plays it over like a voice recording.
I met my best friend about three years ago. After knowing me for six months, he told me about his struggles with depression. Sadness was not the only emotion that came over me; I was shocked. He seemed so outgoing and happy all the time. I soon learnt that he was physically and emotionally abused as a young child, causing him to have suicidal (自殺的) thoughts.
He refuses to talk to others about his depression because he now distrusts adults, especially those in his family. In spite of this, he feels as if I understand him and that I know the right words to say. Thus, when it comes to helping him, convenience is not in my vocabulary. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I am doing, for he takes priority. Sometimes he just needs the assurance of my voice telling him that everything is going to be okay and that I will not let him down.
Many students at his school laugh at him when they notice the scars on his arms from cutting. It seems that other kids have every right to make fun of him and to look down on him. But no one holds such a right, so I encourage him to ignore the heartless kids who treat him badly. When he feels the weight of judging eyes or hateful voices, I always remind him that I care about him unconditionally. Just hearing me say I will always be his best friend seems to give him the security he needs to keep on going.
My best friend once told me that if he hadn’t had me, he wouldn’t be alive. He said that my encouraging words convinced him not to take his life. Our friendship has taught me that a single word can impact on someone’s life. With the fragility of life as it is, I believe in the necessity of encouragement.

It seemed no one cared about Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic(酗酒) parents. In spite of his reading skills, he had been failing exams since first grade. Steve went unnoticed until Miss White.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful redhead, and Steve was in love! For the first time in his young life, he couldn’t take his eyes off his teacher; yet, still he failed. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss White. His heart would break under her sharp words, and when he was punished for failing to turn in his homework, he felt just miserable! Still, he did not study.
Until one day, Miss White talked to him, “Steve! Please! I care about you!”
Suddenly, Steve understood! Someone cared about him!
From that moment nothing was the same for Steve. Life at home remained the same, but life still changed. He discovered that not only could he learn, but he was good at it!
After high-school Steve joined the Navy, and he had a successful military career. During that time, he met the love of his life, he raised a family, and he graduated from a college. Later he became a professor in a nearby college
You see, it’s simple, really. A change took place within the heart of one boy, all because of one teacher, who cared.

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆江西省贛州市高二下學(xué)期第二次月考英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
“Why should I care about the environment?” some people ask. There is a very simple reason: We live on the earth, and it is the only place we can live on right now, as we cannot live in space yet. If we treat the earth like a garbage dump, it will become dirty and unlivable. If we treat it well by being eco-conscious, the earth will stay clean and suitable for living, for ourselves and for our children.
What is “being eco-conscious”?
Being eco-conscious means being aware of your actions, and what you do to the environment. For example, you might think, “Using hairspray is great for fixing my hair.” However, if you are eco-conscious, you would ask, “Does this hairspray have CFCs in it? Could I be destroying the earth by using hairspray?”
How can I be eco-conscious?
You can find many simple ways to help the environment in your everyday life.
When you go shopping, bring a bag or a basket with you. Please try not to use plastic bags as much as you can.
You can go to work by bike or on foot if it is not far from your home.
You can put your rubbish into different bags, which makes it convenient for recycling.
You can eat less chewing gum.
You can use your own chopsticks instead of the disposable ones in your company or in restaurants.
You can put batteries in a special box instead of in garbage bins.
You can use the water which has been used for washing vegetables or fruits to clean the floor and the toilet or to water your garden.
You can turn off the decorative lights in your room when watching TV.
You can turn down your air conditioner by one degree, as this will cause a 10% reduction in energy use.
You can use recycled paper. Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil. You can also use recycled glass instead of glass made from raw materials. This will reduce the related air pollution by 20%, and the related water pollution by 50%.
Please believe that. If you do a little, it will make a big difference.
1.Human beings should care about the environment because _________ .
A.if we make the earth unlivable, we’ll have to live in space
B.it can help our children live better
C.if we don’t, the earth will become a garbage dump
D.it will help to make the world a good living place
2.If your deskmate is an eco-conscious person, he should __________.
A.be aware of the importance of protecting the environment
B.use plastic bags when he buys something
C.know nothing about CFCs
D.turn his air conditioner to a higher degree
3.If you want to help the environment, you should do all the following EXCEPT ________.
A.share a car with your colleagues
B.use paper bags instead of plastic bags
C.use hairspray containing CFCs
D.use recycled glass instead of glass made from raw materials
4.It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A.it’s very hard for human beings to keep the earth clean and comfortable
B.protecting the environment is the duty of everybody
C.we should protect the environment together, as it’s no use doing it individually
D.it’s very easy to be eco-conscious
5.According to the author, which of the following statements is WRONG?
A.Being eco-conscious means you should know much about the environment.
B.The more we care, the better the environment will be.
C.If each of us just does a little, we can’t make any difference.
D.If we treat the earth badly, we’ll make a lot of trouble for ourselves.

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學(xué)年浙江省高三第一次統(tǒng)練英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
Water, which covers about 74 percent of the earth’s surface, is man’s most precious resource. Without it we cannot live. Clean water keeps us alive; polluted water means disease and death. Keeping our water pure is by no means an easy task but it is something that must be done.
Hong Kong once prided herself on being the “Fragrant Harbour”. However, these days, it is not certain if Hong Kong’s harbour could still be called “fragrant”. For, like many other places, Hong Kong has not been spared water pollution. A visit to Tolo and Victoria Harbour, or any of the beaches in Hong Kong is enough to make one aware of the ugly truth that Hong Kong waters are indeed polluted.
The great threat to our water is bacteria pollution. Another great source of water pollution is poisonous chemicals. These substances, which are found in industrial waste and agricultural pesticides, make up unseen dangers that enter biological food chains.
Pollution control is a continuing problem for the government. It is believed that the most effective form of control is legislation(立法). Most importantly, the present laws on pollution should be given more force. On the other hand, no amount of legislation can effectively control pollution unless those concerned are properly educated about the danger posed by pollution.
While a great majority of Hong Kong citizens and residents seem to be greatly concerned about ways to control water pollution, it is discouraging to note that there are, in our midst, some people who remain apathetic(無動(dòng)于衷)about the problem. In a recent radio programme conducted on what people in the streets thought about the water pollution problem, one apparently unconcerned person said, “What do I care about water pollution? I don’t drink polluted water. As long as the water I drink is not polluted, I’m not bothered. Water pollution is too big a problem and let’s leave it to the government.”
If all residents in Hong Kong will take such an indifferent attitude, all the government’s attempts to control pollution, let alone the anti-pollution legislation, will prove useless. The best form of pollution control each citizen can employ is to be aware of his surroundings. We hope that someday, the problem of water pollution in Hong Kong will cease to alarm us.
1.By the underlined sentences, the writer wants to show that ______.
A. we should not use polluted water
B. it is our responsibility to keep our water clean and safe
C. clean water is vitally important to the survival of human beings
D. water is abundant but very expensive
2.What can you infer from the second paragraph?
A. Hong Kong indeed deserves the name.
B. Hong Kong never deserves such a name.
C. Hong Kong can’t avoid the damage of pollution.
D. Hong Kong has failed to live up to such reputation.
3.The writer quotes the words in the programme to show us that a block to the solution of the problem is _________.
A. people’s lack of education
B. people’s I-don’t-care attitude
C. people’s wait-and-see attitude
D. people’s over-dependence on the government
4.In the final analysis, the best approach to the problem of water pollution is ________.
A. legislation
B. rapid development of modern science
C. mass education
D.everybody taking care of his own surroundings
