Starting the day on an egg could keep your blood pressure under control, research suggests. Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood pressure-lowering drugs.

The research, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes (酶) they produce a protein that acts in the same way as Ace inhibitors, but more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.

Earlier this month, British researchers declared that, contrary to popular beliefs, it is healthy to go to work on an egg. They concluded that the type of cholesterol (膽固醇) found in eggs has little effect on increasing heart disease risks.

Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin, from the University of Surrey, said, "The wrong beliefs linking egg eating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected. The amount of fat in our diet has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amounts of cholesterol found in eggs. The UK public do not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat. They can be encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature's most nutritious foods."

The British Heart Foundation dropped its three-egg-a-week limit in 2005. However, almost half of Britons believe the limit still applies.

1.From the text we know that Ace inhibitors are ________.

A. a kind of protein B. a kind of food

C. a kind of medicine D. a kind of illness

2.According to what Professor Bruce said, eggs ________.

A. are the most nutritious food

B. can be included in a healthy diet

C. have no effect on blood cholesterol

D. are forbidden to be eaten in the UK

3.We can infer from the text that ________.

A. stomach enzymes mixed with eggs can cure heart diseases

B. drugs to lower blood pressure will be replaced by eating eggs

C. most Britons agree the three-egg-a-week limit should be dropped

D. about 50% of Britons think eating an egg a day is bad for their health

4.The text is meant ________.

A. to introduce a medicine made from eggs

B. to introduce scientific findings about eggs

C. to tell people how to lower their blood pressure

D. to advise people to eat as many eggs as possible

Dear Mr. Shyamalan,

According to the box office, congratulations are in order. It seems your new movie, Split, is doing gangbusters. That means millions of people all over the world have seen or will soon see your story about a man who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist, Mr. Shyamalan, personally, I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.

As a person who suffers from multiple(多面的)personalities, as well as a psychologist with professional knowledge and skills in the subject, I feel it is my duty to school you in a few facts: People who suffer from DID are not, generally speaking, scary or cheating. We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts. Our condition is often caused by a history of severe and repeated child abuse(虐待). In truth, we are victims(受害者) of unimaginable violence.

With the release of your movie, you have become my bully(恃強(qiáng)凌弱者). I am personally harmed by the absurd fixed image you use in Split. Your description of Kevin Crumb as one gender confused, cross-dressing multiple with a strong liking for violence has the same effect as shouting across the playground, “People with DID are dangerous nut jobs!”

I have lived for years with the shame created by movies such as yours. Despite being a successful doctor who runs a charity for adult survivors of child abuse, I live with constant anxiety that people will learn of my diagnosis(診斷). For no matter how long I’ve known someone or how highly they think of me, once they know I'm a multiple, the reaction is imaginable.

In the future, I’d appreciate it if you stopped using our pain and suffering as materials for your entertainment.

Michelle Stevens

Coffee drink is widespread. When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they’re usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.

Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the shade of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.

Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases the local wildlife habitat, because native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there.

Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides(殺蟲劑)are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, and then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.

Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as "shade-grown" and "bird-friendly".

Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it’s worth it.

1.Which opinion does the author agree with?

A. People should buy full-sun coffee.

B. Shade-grown coffee should be supported.

C. Farmers should change the places to grow coffee.

D. Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting.

2.Compared with the traditional method, what advantage does the full-sun method have?

A. It can protect the ecosystem.

B. It can promote people's health.

C. It can provide mare nests for birds.

D. It can increase the production of coffee.

3.How do farmers get more land to grow full-sun coffee?

A. They cut down trees.

B. They move to other countries.

C. They turn grassland into farmland.

D. They buy more land from other farmers.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A. It is quite worthwhile to buy shade-grown coffee at any cost.

B. Farmers all have realized the importance of protecting the environment now.

C. South American farmers are taking action to plant coffee in the traditional way.

D. The full-sun method does good to the health of human beings in the long run.
