Red tickets in the windows marked which houses we were to visit.Our white truck stopped in front of one house and our group knocked on the door.Our arms were filled with ham,bread and other essentials to make the perfect Christmas dinner.Four small faces glanced through the curtains and one exhausted mom answered the door.She seemed embarrassed to be caught in her nightgown(睡衣) with undone hair.She was in her late-20s,but her rough skin and tired eyes added years.
"Sacred Heart food deliver service,"I smiled."Where can we put this for you?"
She pointed to a place and as we entered the house,I noticed the conditions of the house they lived in.The children climbed around,wearing only diapers(尿布).There were no carpets,only cold concrete beneath our feet.There was no Christmas tree or decorations.My heart sank.It was so cold,and I found it hard to believe that this was the reality for this family.We set boxes down and the mother grabbed my hand.
"You don't know how much of a blessing this is to me and my family,"she said,crying."We are just getting by."I opened my arms and gave her a hug.
"Happy holidays!"I replied before I headed out the door.I realized how warm I felt inside.
This was unlike anything I had ever experienced.We cannot help what family we are born into,but we can help each other.

The engineer Camillo Oliver was 40 years old when he started the company in 1908.

At his factory in Ivrea, he designed and produced the first Italian typewriter. Today the company's head office is still in Ivrea, near Turin, but the company is much larger than it was in those days and there are offices all around the world.

By 1930 there was a staff of 700 and the company turned out 13,000 machines a year. Some went to customers in Italy, but Olivetti exported more typewriters to other countries.

Camillo's son, Adriano, started working for the company in 1924 and later he became the boss. He introduced a standard speed for the production line and he employed technology and design specialists(專家). The company developed new and better typewriters and then calculators(計算機). In 1959 it produced the ELEA computer in Italy.

After Adriano died in 1960, the company had a period of financial problems. Other companies, especially the Japanese, made faster progress in electronic technology than the Italian company.

In 1978, Carlo de Benedetti became the new boss. Olivetti increased its marking and service networks and made agreements with other companies to design and produce more advanced office equipment. I wasn't an excellent student because I didn't do much schoolwork.In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn't have much to offer.I just accepted that I wasn't the type to have a career.
I then found myself a job.Looking after two little girls,it wasn't too bad at first.But the problems began when I agreed to live in,so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening.We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week,she'd give me time off the next.But unfortunately,it didn't often work out.I was getting extremely tired and fed up,because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.
One Sunday,I was in the park with the children,and met Megan who used to go to school with me,I told her about my situation.She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children.I didn't think I would be accepted because I didn't take many exams in school.She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful.My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course.I had to leave my job with the family,and got work helping out at a kindergarten.
Now I've got a full-time job there.I shall always be thankful to Megan.Iwish I had known earlier that you could have a career,even if you aren't top of the class at school.

17.During March break,I had an opportunity to go to Ecuador on a mission trip.In Quito,the capital city,slums dominate,stray dogs exist on every street comer and walls topped with broken glass or nails frame the city streets.Most of the city seems to be held together by pure will,from the one room shack resting on the side of a mountain,to a wall leaning so far over.It doesn't feel safe to walk beside.
In North America,we try to hide our problems behind shiny glass and steel buildings.We cover our emotions with stuff (物質(zhì)).The world sees the proud face put forth by the cities and economies of the western world.In reality,something important is lacking beneath our skyscrapers.Personally,what the average family cares about is what you own and what you do for a living.Families fall apart and the days of knowing your neighbors are long gone.
In Ecuador,many people face problems:poverty,abuse,alcoholism,unemployment and broken homes.Yet they are the happiest,most optimistic people I have ever met.They are always smiling and greeting people.If you get close enough,they'll pull you into a hug and talk to you in Spanish even though you can't understand a single word.
As I worked alongside the Ecuadorians,it became clear that the things North Americans are missing are the relationships and sense of community that hold the people together.These are the key elements to our happiness.
The people of Ecuador lack so much,yet they have so much more to give.The children are raised by a community,and their expressions of love are far more effective than our North American attempts to love our children with stuff.The Ecuadorian people help each other in all ways possible.They pulled me in and shared their love with me.In one of the strangest places I have ever been,I felt at home.
In North America,we need to share and give love like the people of Ecuador.Under our mask of steel and glass,we are more damaged than some of the least privileged people in the world.I went on this trip to help people,but in the end,they helped me more than I could ever help them.
68.Which is the best title for this passage?A
A.Discovering What We lack
B.Bringing Happiness to the Poor
C.Helping for Love in Return
D.Building International Relationship
69.Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank in Paragraph 1?C
A.People don't share many common interests in North America and Ecuador.
B.North America is very unique from Ecuador but also similar in some ways.
C.The differences between the North American world and Ecuador are vast.
D.Some serious economic problems exist in North America and Ecuador.
70.Which of the following is TRUE?B
A.Ecuadorians are blind to their social problems.
B.Material needs are overstressed in North America.
C.Ecuadorians love their children with stuff more effectively.
D.Emotional problems are obvious to be noticed in North America.
71.The writer convinces the readers byD.
