Making an advertisement for television often costs more than a move. For example, a two-hour movie costs $ 6 million to make.A TV commercial can cost more than $ 6 000 a second. And that does not include cost of paying for air time(電視節(jié)目開(kāi)始的時(shí)間).Which is more valuable, the program or the ad? In terms of money--and making money is what television is all about the commercial is by far the more important.

Research, market testing, talent, time and money--all come together to make us want to buy a product. No matter how bad we think a commercial is, it works. The sales of Charm went up once the ads began.TV commercials actually buy their way into our head. We, in turn, buy the product.

And the ads work because so much time an attention are given them. Here are some rules of commercial ad making. If you want to get the low middle-class buyer, make sure the announcer has a tough, manly voice.Put some people in the ad who work with their hands. If you want to sell to upper-class audience, make sure that the house, the furniture, and the hair style are the types that the group identifies (識(shí)別) with.If you want the buyer feel superior to the character selling the product, then make that person so stupid or silly that everyone will feel great about himself or herself

We laugh at commercials. We don't think we pay that much attention them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves. The making of a commercial that costs so much money is not kid stuff. It's big, big business. And it's telling us what to think, what we need, and what to buy.To put simply, the TV commercial is a form of brainwashing.

TV commercials are more important than other programs to television because _______.

A.they bring in great profits (利潤(rùn))     B.they require a lot of money to make

C.they are not difficult to produce       D.they attract more viewers than other programs

A.to persuade people to buy the product      B.to show how valuable the product is

C.to test the market value of the product     D.to make them as interesting as TV movies

From the rules set for making commercial ads, we can see that_________.

A.the lower-middle-class buyer likes to work with his hand

B.the more stupid the characters, the more buyers of the product

C.a(chǎn)d designers attract different people with different skills

D.a(chǎn)n upper-class buyer is more interested in houses and furniture than a lower-middle-class buyer

Part one: First Major Novels
If Dickens had remained the author of Pickwick, Oliver Twist, and The Old Curiosity Shop, he might have gained lasting fame only as an author of cheerful comedy. But Dombey and Son, published in 1846 and continued till 1848, is a realistic novel of human life in a society which had taken more or less its modern form. The novel is a study of the influence of the values of a business society n the members of the Dombey family.
Part two:
In 1851 Dickens was struck by the death of his father and one of his daughters within 2 weeks.
Partly in response to these losses, he created a series of works which have come to be called his
“dark” novels and which rank among the greatest success of the art of fiction.
Par three: Later Works
In 1859 Dickens published A Tale of Two Cities, a historical novel of the French Revolution, which is read today most often as a school text. It is fine picture of the historical period and a moving tale of a surprisingly modern hero. Besides publishing this novel in the lately founded All the Year Round, Dickens also published 17 articles, which appeared as a book later.
Dickens’s next novel, Great Expectations(1860~1861), tells the story of a young man’s moral(道德的)development in the course of his life-from childhood in the provinces to gentleman’s role in London. Not based on his own life like David Copperfield, Great Expectations belongs to type of fiction called, in German, Bildungsroman (the novel of a man’s education or formation by experience.)

Parking has long been a major headache for drivers in Shanghai. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are one million cars on the road in Shanghai but only enough public parking space to provide room for 15percent of them. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.

The city is seeing a rise in private car owners. In March, the city sent out 2,000 private car licenses, the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. And prices rose to 14,600 yuan, 500 more than in February. Industry experts say this suggests that local people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.

By the year 2020, the number of automobiles in Shanghai will probably reach two million. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles.

Downtown Shanghai is most short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in downtown areas is not practical and doesn’t provide an ideal solution. The idea of “ Park & Ride” system has been suggested. This means that drivers can leave their vehicles in car par nearby subway or bus stations and ride public transport to go downtown. Based on this idea, the city will limit the number of parking lots in downtown areas and demand higher parking fees but build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.

1.The underlined phrase “ mapping out ” in the first paragraph means __________.

A. making     B. arguing        C. controlling        D. inspiring

2. About __________ drivers can find places to park their cars in Shanghai now.

A. 850,000     B. 1,000,000       C. 150,000        D. 2,000,000

3. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us ?

A. The city sent out more private licenses in February.

B. Less and less people bought cars in March.

C. The city sent out less private licenses in March.

D. More and more people are going to buy cars.
