閱讀下列短文,根據(jù)所讀內(nèi)容在表格中的空白處填入恰當?shù)膯卧~。

注意:每個空格只填一個單詞。

Can you play a musical instrument?Where did you learn to play it?If you were a pupil in a British school, you would most probably learn at school.Around 25% of British pupils learn an instrument. What's more, of the 75% that don't, 40% would like to.But what instruments do the pupils learn to play?Traditionally, school children learnt classical instruments, such as the piano or violin. This is still true today.Younger children often learn the recorder. As they get older, they start to play the violin or piano. In fact, nearly one out of five music students is learning the violin. The piano, or keyboard, is m ore popular with older children at secondary school. However, things are changing.More pupils than ever before are now learning the guitar. As many as 16% of pupils learning an instrument are strumming(彈奏)its strings.

British schools do not just offer lessons for instruments. All pupils learn music together as a class. These classes have been changing, too.In the past, the focus of classes was very much Western classical music. But the classes now cover a far wider range of styles, including folk music and world music. In a recent study by Keele University, 64% of boys and 70% of girls said they enjoyed music lessons as a class. They like singing and playing instruments and find the lessons fun.

Many schools have orchestras(管弦樂隊)and put on concerts each term.It is also common for pupils themselves to form their own bands, copying their rock and pop heroes. In conclusion, music plays big part in British schools.Pupils can study and instrument, play music together as a class and even take part in concerts and plays.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項,選項中有兩項為多余選項

Dear Mom and Dad,

I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty(調(diào)皮的) and the school principal(校長) is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here.

The trouble started last night when I was smoking in bed. This is against the rules, of course.

As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away.

There was a curtain(窗簾) near the waste-paper basket which caught fire too. Soon the whole room was burning.

The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.

The principal said that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage.

The principal phoned the fire department.

She doesn’t want me to smoke here.

We are not allowed to smoke at all.

She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.

She does not want me in her school any longer.

Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire.

G. The fire spread to another room

My grandfather came from Hungary and was the only one in his family who settled down in the United States. The rest of his family remained in Europe. When World War I broke out, he seemed to have become another man, downhearted. Such obvious change was not born out of concern for his welfare, but out of fear: if his only son, my uncle, had to go to war, it would be cousin fighting against cousin.

One day in 1918, my Uncle Milton received his draft notice. My grandparents were very upset. But my mother, at the age of 10, felt on top of the world about her soldier brother going off to war. Realizing how he was regarded by his little sister and all of her friends, my uncle bought them all service pins, which meant that they had a loved one in the service. All the little girls were delighted.

The moment came when my uncle and the other soldiers, without any training but all in uniforms, boarded the train. The band played and the crowd cheered. Although no one noticed. I’m sure my grandmother had a tear in her eye for the only son. The train slowly pulled out, but not about a thousand yards when it suddenly paused. Everyone stared in wonder as the train slowly returned to the station. There was a dead silence before the doors opened and the men started to step out. Someone shouted, “The war is over!” For a moment, nobody moved, but then the people heard someone bark orders at the soldiers. The men lined up in two lines, walked down the steps, and with the band playing, marched down the street, as returning heroes, to be welcomed home. My mother said it was a great day, but she was just a little disappointed that it didn’t last a tiny bit longer.

What the grandfather was most worried about was ______.

 A. the spread of the world war                      B. the safety of his two cousins

 C. a drop in his living standards                    D. his relatives killing each other

The underlined phrase “draft notice” means “______”.

 A. order for army service                             B. train ticket for Europe

 C. letter of rejection                                     D. note of warning

What did the “service pins” (in Para. 2) stand for in the eyes of the little girls?

 A. Strength.             B. Courage.               C. Victory.                        D. Honor.

Which of the following words can best describe the ending of the story?

 A. Disappointing.    B. Unexpected.          C. Uncertain.             D. Inspiring.

UGG boots have been a winter-weather fashion for several years now, combining function, comfort, warmth and even some style. What many UGG-enthusiasts don’t know is that their boots are a breeding ground for bacteria and cause foot problems.
Doctors believe the boots, which are particularly popular among young teenage girls, are leading to a rise in the number of people suffering pains in their feet and knees.
Dr. Ian Drysdale, head of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, believes because the foot does not get the proper support on the inside,it will lead to more ankle, knee, hip and back problems. “These boots are not designed for outside wear. Just because something becomes a trend or fashionable doesn’t mean it’s good or right,” he said, “The particular problem with this type of footwear is that it is unsupported. It’s a slipper. You wouldn’t normally expect to be doing outdoor activities from something that’s indoor. If you decide to wear your pajamas outside all. the time, someone will come up and say it’s not a good idea. ” Dr. Drysdale explained that the feet issues become a particular problem among young teenage girls, whose bones are “ plastic ” and developing when they are growing. “ If that structure is developing in an inappropriate way,” he said, “then the ultimate structure will be deformed ”
