I was sitting at my favorite table in a restaurant on last Sunday waiting for the food I had ordered to arrive. I suddenly found that Lin Ling, one of my classmate, worked as a waitress there. Honest speaking, it was great surprise for me to find her working there. As far as I know, she’s from a richer family. What made her work there? I walked up to her but asked her the reason. When asking, she said, “I just want to earn some pocket money so that we can help some children in poor areas go back to school.” How a good girl! I should learn from her.

The Science of Risk-Seeking

Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 【1】 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.

The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 2 As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.

So why aren’t we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200, 000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. 3

No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 4 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.

___【5 For the risk-seekers, a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.

As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.

A. It all depends on your character

B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.

C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.

D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.

E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.

F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.

G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

【題目】Breakthroughs in science and technology are paving the way for modern cities to support bigger populations. Now, we see the most exciting urban innovations to show you exactly how theyll improve your citys infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施).

Lighting Up The Night

Anthony Di Mari dreamed up an electric tree to help irrigate public parks and light them at night. These electric trees contain a special infill (填充物) that collects water from rainfall. The water is then distributed through a shallow underground irrigation system with the help from the trees’ swaying movement. An electric motor turns energy from the waving of the artificial trees into electricity, which is used to light up the trees’ outer LEDs.

Thinking Outside The Box

As more people flock to urban areas, city planners will need to get increasingly creative about how to satisfy residents’ health and transportation needs within decreasing available space. One way to achieve this is by updating infrastructure to support biking and walking by building suspended(懸浮的) roundabouts like hovering in the Netherlands. By lifting bicycle and pedestrian traffic above busy roadways, cities can significantly decrease over-crowded traffic condition.

Waving Hello To Clean Energy

Cities that dont receive enough sunlight may find an attractive alternative in wave power. Since ocean waves rarely experience disruption(中斷), electric engines driven by their clockwork push-and-pull can reliably provide power throughout the year. Further, thanks to advances in wave power technology, engineers have been able to move wave power engines farther offshore, where the waves pack the most punch, making the engines extremely efficient. So in the future, heavily populated coastal cities may use wave to meet their energy needs.

【1】What is the special infill used to do?

A. To make the trees beautiful.

B. To produce electricity.

C. To help the trees’ swaying.

D. To collect water from rainfall.

2】How do the Netherlands improve the city traffic according to the text?

A. By updating the city roadway condition.

B. By building walking passages underground.

C. By creating suspended roundabouts above roadways.

D. By supporting more biking and walking.

【3】What does the author mainly tell us in the last paragraph?

A. The advantages of wave power.

B. The ways to use wave power.

C. The future of wave power.

D. The advances in wave power technology.

1.Identify and understand what you want to change.

Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes(刻板印象) or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail?

At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企業(yè)家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敵意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).__【1】_ Jealousy is sometimes known as the green-eyed monster and the UK is its home.

Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money. _ 2_ Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this.

_3__ But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world's fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either.

It is not really success that the British dislike, says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Its people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.

_4__ They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires.__ 5__ It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them.

【題目】Watching a 3D movie can more than double the concentration powers and cognitive(認知) processing of children, a new research claims.

A study made by visual technology firm RealD and led by child psychologist Dr Richard Woolfson suggests that children aged between 7 and 14 experienced twice the cognitive processing speed and performed better in testing after watching 20 minutes of a 3D film. This is despite suggestions that attention spans(時期) in children have shortened in the last decade due to unlimited to access to entertainment, including on-demand TV, gaming and social media. A 2015 study claimed that watching 3D content had a similar effect to brain-training exercises.

Consumer psychologist Mr Fagan said that the increased stimulation(刺激) found in watching something in 3D "exercised" the brain and improved performance in the short term. "3D films can play the role of brain-training games and help to make children ‘smarter’ in the short term," he said. "The shortening of response times after watching 3D was almost three times as big as that gained from watching 2D; in other words, 3D helps children process aspects of their environment more quickly. This is likely to be because 3D is a mentally stimulating experience which gets the brain's juices flowing."

The experiment saw children given a range of cognitive tests before watching 20 minutes of a movie in either 2D or 3D and being tested again. The results showed those who saw the 3D content reacted faster and performed bettering the second round of testing. Mental engagement also rose by 13% among 3D watchers. Child psychologist Dr Woolfson added that “supportive parenting” and regularly listening to classical music can also aid a child’s memory.

A. a 3D movie makes their brain active

B. a 3D movie is more exciting than a 2D movie

C. children enjoy watching a 3D movie

D. children like the experience which “gets the brain’s juices flowing”

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
