No one doubts that students should study languages, maths and science in high school, but some may be against the idea that they should study art and music as well. To them, these subjects are useless for students' future and are not worth the time and effort. In my opinion, however, it is necessary for middle school students to study art and music.
Art and music are a valuable culture legacy(遺產(chǎn)), which bring us pleasure and enjoyment. Have you ever been deeply moved by Beethoven's famous Fifth Symphony? Have you ever been shocked by the colorful starry night produced by Vincent van Gogh in his paint? Have you ever longed for the moving love between the Butterfly Lovers when you hear this well-known Chinese melody(曲調(diào))? Art and music are not only images and sounds, but something beyond them. They are the products of passion and human wisdom.
Art and music help make students more creative. Artists and musicians are considered the most creative people in the world. It is because art and music sharpen their senses and provide a different perspective (視角)for them to see the world. Many great scientists benefited from art and music. Einstein, the greatest physicist in the 20th century, as well as an excellent violin player, is a good example.
Enjoying art and music is also a good way to relax ourselves. Middle school students, who typically carry heavy burdens of study, will definitely benefit from it.
In a word, art and music should absolutely be included in the middle school courses, for they can bring students pleasure, creativity and relaxation.
1.According to the author, people who think art and music are useless for middle school students_____.
A. don't realize the value of art and music
B. don't know the history of art and music at all
C. never benefit from artists and musicians
D. know little about the future education
2.In paragraph 2, the author tries to argue that______.
A. Beethoven is one of the greatest musicians
B. art and music help express people's feelings
C. art and music are valuable pictures and sounds
D. art and music bring people joy and relaxation
3.The example of Einstein is used to_______.
A. show the importance of creativity
B. prove that scientists are creative
C. encourage students to study art and music
D. provide students with a new way to see the world
4.Which of the following is used to support the writer's opinion?
A. Art and music are helpful to make students creative learners.
B.Art and music provide people with more opportunities.
C.Art and music help people become scientists.
D.Art and music must help students in other subjects.
5.Which of the following is an effective way for middle school students to study ?
A. Relaxing themselves regularly while studying.
B. Attending concerts during holidays or after school.
C. Avoiding too much homework by studying art and music.
D. Listening to music while studying language, maths or other subjects.

We were moving to a new state after my husband had been out of work for many months and we had no money. In fact, we had to borrow money to reach our destination town. Anyway, it was my husband, two boys aged four and two, and myself, seven months pregnant (懷孕), in an old Volvo station wagon. We had been driving for two days in the middle of winter (that car’s heater didn’t work), and we had taken a route that was very desolate. There was nothing around for miles-no cars, buildings or signs of civilization. Suddenly, our car started losing power and the gauges(汽油表) went all out of order. We saw a light in the distance and managed to roll to a stop in front of this property that looked like a small simple house. Our cell phones had not gotten reception for many miles, and it was freezing outside, so I didn’t know if we were going to make it out of this situation alive. My husband got out of the car to see if there was something he could do to get us rolling again, but it was not looking good. A short while later, a man came out of the house and spoke with my husband a bit before inviting us all into his home. He and his wife took us in, fed us, and made us feel at home as we struggled to find some way to get to our destination, which was still a few hours’ drive away. We were able to call a friend and get a ride, leaving our broken car behind, but not before the couple gave us food and water for our journey. One week later, this dear sweet couple pulled our car all the way to our place and refused to take anything in return, except for us to pay it forward-and we have, and will continue to do it forever.

“A very disruptive (調(diào)皮搗蛋的) six-year-old child kicked my legs and clawed at my hand,” said one teacher. “I broke up a fight and was kicked between my legs,” said another. Many people have heard stories like this. But the situation is more worrying still and it involves parents.
Every child, regardless of the circumstances into which they are born, has the right to achieve their potential, regardless of their parents’ wealth and class. And we recognize that, as a nation, it is a long way to achieve this goal. But with rights come responsibilities and what worries people is that we are in danger of neglecting the latter.
Far too many children are behaving badly at school, even to the point of being violent to staff. This is terrible enough, but it is hard to be surprised since many children are just mirroring the behaviour of their parents. Too many are starting school unable to hold a knife and fork, unused to eating at a table, and unable to use the lavatory(衛(wèi)生間) properly.
We are in danger of becoming a nation of families living separate lives under one roof. The bedroom, once a place to sleep, has become the living space for the young. Spending hours in front of computer screens, on social networking sites or being immersed (沉迷于) in computer games, children and young people spend little time with their parents. Parents are unable to monitor just what their children are watching.
Schools cannot right the wrongs of society and teachers cannot become substitute parents. Both parties need to work together. Parents must be helped and given confidence to take back control. They are responsible for setting boundaries for their children’s behaviour and sticking to those boundaries. They are responsible for setting a good example to their children and for devoting that most precious of resources---time---so that children come to school ready and willing to learn.
1.In the opinion of the writer, what problem do people ignore?
A. The violence in the school
B. The pressure of students’ learning
C. The right to achieve students’ potential
D. The responsibilities of the students.
2.The underlined part in paragraph 4 means________.
A. parents care little about children’s life at home
B. parents and children live in their separate rooms
C. children don’t live with their parents in the same house
D. children live a different life from that of parents at home
3.The writer’s attitude to the behaviours of parents may be_______.
A. unconcern B. understanding
C. dissatisfied D. tolerant

Fido was now his master's constant companion in his walks, playing and skipping round him, and amusing him by a thousand sportive tricks . He took care, however, not to be troublesome by leaping on him with dirty paws, nor would he follow him into the parlor(客廳), unless invited. He also attempted to make himself useful by a number of little services. He would drive away the sparrows as they were stealing the chickens' meat; and would run and bark with the utmost fury at any strange pigs or other animals that offered to come into the yard. He kept the poultry, geese, and pigs from straying beyond their bounds and particularly from doing mischief in the garden. He was always ready to alarm Towzer if there was any suspicious noise about the house, day or night. If his master pulled off his coat in the field to help his workman, as he would sometimes do, Fido always sat by it, and would not suffer either man or beast to touch it. By this means he came to be considered as a very trusty protector of his master's property.
His master was once confined to his bed with a dangerous illness. Fido planted himself at the chamber-door, and could not be persuaded to leave it even to take food; and as soon as his master was so far recovered as to sit up, Fido, being admitted into the room, ran up to him with such marks of excessive joy and affection, as would have melted any heart to behold.
One hot day, after dinner, his master was sleeping in a summer-house , with Fido by his side. The building was old and crazy; the dog comprehended the danger, and began barking to awaken his master; and this not sufficing, he jumped up, and gently bit his finger. The master upon this started up, and had just time to get out of the door before the whole building fell down. Fido, who was behind, got hurt by some rubbish which fell upon him. Thus his love and fidelity had their full reward.

A. Fido is too cautious to satisfy his master.

A. Saving the Master
B. The Loyal Dog
C. Protecting the Master’s Possession

As I left Spacsavers, I walked along the Regent Road, and suddenly the world was closing in around me. I could no longer hear the sound of busy London traffic, the footsteps walking behind me, the buzz of conversation around me. I felt anxious crossing the road. All the I take for granted had gone. I had entered into a world of silence.
This experience occurred a few weeks ago when I agreed to “go deaf for the day” to the work of the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Now I serve as an ambassador.
That day when I a cab to take me to the office of my manager, Gavin, I couldn’t hear what the taxi driver was saying to me. was impossible. Then, when I reached the office, I had to the interphone (對講機(jī))five times as I couldn’t hear a(n) .
Everybody said I was shouting at them — I simply wasn’t of the volume of my own voice. Gavin kept telling me my phone was ringing, but I didn’t . I was too busy trying to concentrate on his lips. And when he tried to tell me a code to put into my phone, I had to keep asking him to repeat it more slowly again and again. he lost his patience and shouted at me: “Just give me the phone!” I was shocked.
People couldn’t be to repeat themselves, so they kept trying to do things for me that I was to finish by myself. I lost control, feeling and awkward.
Being deaf for the day was extraordinarily . I had to work so hard to “ ” with my eyes, get people’s attention and use my other to make up for my lack of hearing. It was a huge, exhausting effort. Until that I didn’t realize how much I took my own hearing for granted, or the sorts of emotions and experiences deaf people go .
Therefore, if a deaf person asks you to repeat something, say: “It doesn’t matter.” It does matter. It matters more than you know.
