In recent years, the water pollution has become the focus of people’s concern.
In recent years, the water pollution has become the focus of people’s concern. As a result of the pollution, many local people have no access to clean tap water. If the pollution can’t be controlled, people’s health will be in danger. Worse still, it has a bad effect on the environment, killing almost all the fish or wildlife in or along rivers. The reasons are not hard to find. First, we take what we get from nature for granted without the slightest awareness of protecting the rivers we depend on. Second, with the economic growth, more and more waste materials have been poured into water.
Actually, it is just like killing the goose that lays the golden egg. There is no denying that urgent measures should be taken to prevent the situation going from bad to worse. Not only should the chemical companies along the river be abolished, but people’s awareness of water protection should also be promoted. Only in this way can we live in harmony with nature.

When humans and nature go head to head, nature often ends up losing. Rivers get polluted. Trees are knocked down. Natural resources are exhausted. That’s what makes the Galapagos Islands so special—it’s one of he few places on the Earth that nature can truly call its own.
For people used to having wild animals run at the scent of humans, a visit to the Galapagos is a real eye-opening experience. Over 1,600 km west of Ecuador, the islands are home to a unique variety of animals that have absolutely no fear of people. Visitors can play on the beach with sea lions and giant sea turtles, swim with dolphins and whales, and get close enough to the penguins to count the eggs in their nests.
The islands were declared a national park over 40 years ago, and the number of human visitors is tightly limited to avoid damaging he environment or putting stress on the animal. Tourists have to pay a $100 daily visitors fee, and can’t step off the boat unless accompanied(陪同) by an official guide. Once on the islands, you have to stay on the trail(小徑), but that seldom presents a problem: the animals are so curious about people that they’ll usually come up to say hello.
“It’s a little like being in a zoo,” said one traveler. “But instead of us looking at the animals, the animals, the animals are looking at us.”
Aside from the wildlife, one of the island’ more unusual features is its post office. You can send postcards for free, but the problem is that there’s no postman to collect them. Instead, travelers pick up mail addressed to people who live near them back home, and then hand-deliver the postcards when their trip is finished.

Mr. Laurence was not allowed to see Beth, and Meg felt unhappy writing letters to her mother saying nothing about Beth’s illness. Jo nursed Beth night and day, but the time came when Beth did not know her and called for her mother. Jo was frightened, and Meg begged to be allowed to write the truth, but Hannah said there was no danger yet. Then a letter came saying that Mr. March was worse and could not think of coming home for a long time.
How dark the days seemed. How sad and lonely. The sisters worked and waited as the shadow of death lay over the once happy home. It was then that Meg realized how rich she had been in the things which really mattered—love, peace, good health. And Jo, watching her little sister, thought about how unselfish Beth always was—living for others and trying to make home a happy place for all who came there. Amy, sad and lonely at Aunt March’s house, just wanted to come home so that she could do something to help Beth.
On the first day of December, the doctor came in the morning. He looked at Beth, then said quietly, ‘If Mrs. March can leave her husband, I think she should come home now.’
Jo threw on her coat and ran out into the snow to send a telegram. When she arrived back, Laurie came with a letter saying that Mr. March was getting better again. This was good news, but Jo’s face was so unhappy that Laurie asked, ‘What is it? Is Beth worse?’
‘I’ve sent for Mother,’ said Jo, beginning to cry. ‘Beth doesn’t know us any more.’
Laurie held her hand and whispered, ‘I’m here, Jo. Hold on to me. Your mother will be here soon, and then everything will be all right.’

2.Which of the following is NOT true about Beth?

B. She liked playing the piano very much.
C. She once almost drowned herself in the river.
